The Effect of Violence and Intersecting Structural Inequities on High Rates of Food Insecurity among Marginalized Sex Workers in a Canadian Setting.

Food security is both a basic human right and a public health necessity. Despite known gendered contexts of food insecurity, there is a dearth of research on prevalence and factors driving increased food insecurity for sex workers in a criminalized setting. The current study longitudinally examines the prevalence and structural and individual factors associated with increased odds of food insecurity among street and off-street sex workers in a Canadian urban setting. Prospective analyses drew on data from a community-based longitudinal cohort of cis and trans women in street and off-street sex

Cluster randomized controlled trial of Stepping Stones and Creating Futures to reduce mental health challenges among young men in informal settlements in KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Informal settlements are high density areas in and around cities, characterized by a lack of formal planning and basic amenities, being known in South Africa for high levels of mental disorder driven by violence, and complex social and economic challenges. In particular, young men's poor mental health goes untreated, with relatively few evidenced-based interventions available in this setting. AIM: This cluster randomized controlled trial investigated the effectiveness of Stepping Stones and Creating Futures (SS/CF), a participatory gender transformative and economic empowerment in

Pre-Existing Inequality: The Impact of COVID-19 on Medicare Home Health Beneficiaries.

There is significant data on the adverse impact of COVID-19 on persons who were poor, minorities, had compromised physical or mental health, or other vulnerabilities prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. A significant portion of the overall Medicare population has such vulnerabilities. The Medicare home health beneficiary population is even more vulnerable than the overall Medicare population based on gender, race, income level, living alone status, and number of chronic conditions. A literature review indicates there is only 1 study on the impact of COVID-19 in Medicare home health on home care wor

[Burnout among elderly care staff. A review of its prevalence].

Provision of inpatient elderly care is characterized by factors that favor the onset of burnout, with psychosomatic complaints, a drop in performance, periods of absence due to sickness, and early retirement from the sector regularly being observed in this respect. This study summarizes the research of the past 11 years, regarding the prevalence of burnout among inpatient elderly care employees. A total of 24 studies were identified during a systematic database search conducted in May 2011. As the studies conceptualize burnout differently and are based on different survey tools, it is not poss

Ethical and relational injustice in health care for people experiencing homelessness.

Ethical considerations: Equitable access to healthcare is a fundamental right recognized internationally. However, people without stable housing face multiple structural, administrative and relational barriers that limit this right, especially in European contexts such as Spain. Women experiencing homelessness also suffer specific forms of discrimination and violence that exacerbate their vulnerability.ObjectiveTo explore the experiences of people affected by homelessness in their interaction with health services in Spain, identifying barriers, experiences, and proposals for improvement from a

Structural Barriers to HIV Prevention and Services: Perspectives of African American Women in Low-Income Communities.

BACKGROUND: African American women are at a disproportionate HIV risk compared with other U.S. women. Studies show that complex structural and social determinants, rather than individual behaviors, place African American women at greater risk of HIV infection; however, little is known about women's views of what puts them at risk. AIMS: This study sought to comprehend the perceptions of African American women living in low-income housing regarding the factors that influence both their personal sexual health behaviors and use of HIV prevention services. METHODS: We conducted seven focus group

Neurocysticercosis in Northern Peru: Qualitative Insights from men and women about living with seizures.

BACKGROUND: Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a helminthic disease of the central nervous system, and it is one of the leading causes of seizures and symptomatic epilepsy in countries with tropical regions like Peru. Studies of people with epilepsy in Peru's northern coast have consistently found that between 30% and 50% of epilepsy cases is associated with NCC. There are few studies that report on the differences in incidence and prevalence of NCC by sex, and to our knowledge, none that consider the gendered dimensions of having epilepsy. METHODOLOGY: This qualitative study based on individual int

The lived experience of trans persons: a bottom-up review co-written by experts by experience and academics.

We present here the first bottom-up review of the lived experience of trans persons, co-written by experts by experience and academics. We sourced the medical and non-medical literature, focusing on first-person narratives, and critically extracted experiential themes, which were reviewed and appraised in collaborative workshops and eventually shared through a cloud-based system. Numerous experts by experience and academics from diverse gender, ethnic and cultural backgrounds were involved in the above steps and co-wrote the paper. The four overarching themes were: a) the lived experience of t

Trauma type as a conditional risk factor for posttraumatic stress disorder in a referred clinic sample of adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic experiences that are varied in type and severity may lead to the development of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Some trauma types present a higher conditional risk for PTSD owing to their nature and impact on growth and functioning. Few studies have investigated the conditional risk of PTSD in clinic referred adolescents in low- and middle-income countries. The aim of the study was to determine the conditional risk for PTSD based on various trauma types (car accidents, other serious accidents, fires, witnessing a natural disaster, witnessing a violent crime, being

Women's empowerment and barriers to healthcare access in Burkina Faso: an ordinal logistic regression analysis of the 2021 DHS.

BACKGROUND: Although free healthcare policies for women have been implemented in Burkina Faso, access to essential services remains severely hindered by insecurity, climate shocks, and widespread displacement. As one of the most affected countries in West Africa by internal conflict and fragility, Burkina Faso provides a critical context for examining gendered health disparities. Yet, studies that address the aspects of women's empowerment in this country remain rare, despite their importance for understanding healthcare access. Against this backdrop, the present study investigates how women's

Mental health outcomes, literacy and service provision in low- and middle-income settings: a systematic review of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the prevalence of mental health issues could be greater than in other low-income and middle-income countries because of major risk factors related to armed conflicts and poverty. Given that mental health is an essential component of health, it is surprising that no systematic evaluation of mental health in the DRC has yet been undertaken. This study aims to undertake the first systematic review of mental health literacy and service provision in the DRC, to bridge this gap and inform those who need to develop an evidence base. This could support po

'There Were Moments We Wished She Could Just Die': The Highly Gendered Burden of Nodding Syndrome in Northern Uganda.

Nodding Syndrome (NS) occurs within a wide spectrum of epilepsies seen in onchocerciasis endemic areas of sub-Saharan Africa. It has debilitating consequences on affected individuals and increases the socio-economic, physical and psychological burden on care-givers and their households, diminishing their standing within the community. Social science research on the disproportionate burden of the disease on females is limited. Based on ethnographic research over 3 years in northern Uganda, we explored the burden of being ill and care-giving for persons with NS from a gendered perspective. We fo

A Psychosocial Understanding of Child Sexual Abuse Disclosure Among Female Children in South Africa.

Child sexual abuse is endemic in South Africa, driven by high levels of gender-based violence and underscored by structural and social factors. This article aims to develop an understanding of the process of disclosure in a sample of female children and their caregivers. In-depth semistructured interviews were conducted with 31 female children aged 8-17 years and their caregivers at 3 intervals after presentation to a sexual assault treatment center. Nearly half of the children failed to disclose the sexual abuse immediately, fearing caregivers' reaction. Most children purposefully disclosed t…

The Shift in Delivery of Care from Hospital to Community Care Settings: What Changes in Terms of Healthcare Workers' Exposure to Violence.

Background: Despite the general interest in WPV against healthcare workers, there is evidence that this topic has comparatively fewer studies conducted in the context of community settings than in hospital settings. Given the current general transition of care from hospital to community, this study aims to analyze whether community settings present different characteristics in comparison with hospital settings on this topic in Italy. Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted from 2020 to 2024 on aggressions reported by HCWs in hospitals and community settings belonging to a Lo

Responses to intimate partner violence in Kakuma refugee camp: refugee interactions with agency systems.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) has been recognised as a significant problem amongst forcibly displaced communities, and great progress has been made by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) in responding to IPV and other forms of sexual and gender based violence. However, they have not always effectively engaged refugee communities in these activities, with potentially negative consequences for the health and protection of women. This study was conducted in Kakuma refugee camp, north-west Kenya. Eighteen focus group discussions were conducted with 157 refugees from various n
