Pharmacokinetic, therapeutic effects, and side effects of nortriptyline were studied in geriatric depressed patients treated with a standard dose of 150 mg/day. Plasma levels and elimination half-life of nortriptyline were no different in geriatric patients than younger patients. The antidepressant therapeutic effects of nortriptyline appeared to be similar in geriatric patients as in younger depressed patients. Blood pressure measurements were collected from 36 depressed geriatric outpatients (ages 55 to 81 years) enrolled in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study of the efficacy of doxepin and imipramine. A survey of 172 patients attending a geriatric day hospital revealed that 33 patients (19%) suffered travel sickness at some time. Sixteen (49%) of these patients also had a past history of travel sickness, while only 10 (7%) of those who were not sick gave a positive past history. The use of emergency vehicles for transporting patients may have increased the level of travel sickness. Several disadvantages of rigid temporary dressings for geriatric amputees led to the trial of a relatively new kind of pylon--the Pneumatic Post-Amputation Mobility Aid (PPAM). Psychiatric evaluation as a part of the complete geriatric workup was done on 143 consecutive patients transferred to a Medical Geriatric Evaluation Unit. The patients' age ranged from 48 to 94 years. During 5 years 1311 operations for benign diseases of the biliary tract were performed. 281 patients were more than 70 years old, on the average 76,1 years. Significant bacteriuria is associated with dementia, incontinence of faeces and of urine in long-stay hospital patients. Bacteriuria in these patients is a fluctuating condition: it occurred in 47% of an initially sterile control group during the course of a year. Management with urinary antiseptics and an initial course of antibiotics is more successful than antibiotics on demand. However, since the condition is so fluctuating, it is doubtful if any treatment is usually needed other than the prevention of faecal incontinence.

24 cases are described in which retroperitoneal processes were operated on for primarily gynecologic reasons in women of at least 60 years of age. They include 6 sarcomas, 3 neurinomas, 1 cyst, 1 fibroma, 1 lipoma, 1 congenital sacciform kidney, 1 hydronephrosis, 3 pancreatic carcinomas, 2 renal carcinomas, 1 ureteral cyst and 4 metastases of various malignomas. Two periods of geriatric gynecological surgery (1947-1959 and 1960-1972) at the University Women's Hospital in Hamburg-Eppendorf were compared in regard to the age of the patient, surgical indications, surgical procedure, anesthetic technique, preoperative and postoperative morbidity, length of hospitalization and mortality rate. Age-specific criteria must be taken into consideration in the treatment of hormonal dysregulations during senescence and senium. A general transmission of the endocrine conditions of younger periods of life to the senium is not possible and induces the possibilities of complications which are demonstrated at the example of the thyroidal and parathyroidal metabolism. The course of endocrine crises is the severer the older the patients concerned are. Dealing with the pathophysiological findings, the author demonstrates and explains therapeutic standards according to own experiences.
