Power of their stories: faces of kernicterus - experience and perception of caregivers and their children in Northern Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Our qualitative study was conducted to explore real-life experiences and challenges of caregivers and individuals with kernicterus spectrum disorder (KSD) in Northern Nigeria, where it remains a significant cause of neurological impairment. The lived experiences of affected individuals and their caregivers are largely undocumented. These stories of caregivers living with children with KSD and survivors with KSD highlight challenges and obstacles they face beyond bilirubin levels and quantitative measures. METHODS: We conducted focus group discussions (FGDs; n=7), caregivers (n=54

Patient perspectives on clinical trial participation for novel advanced therapies: a focus group study in systemic lupus erythematosus.

To identify barriers and facilitators in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) regarding participation in clinical trials for novel/advanced agents, such as cellular therapies. Adults from our SLE research registry participated in 1-hour virtual focus groups concerning their perspectives on clinical trials for novel/advanced SLE therapies. Sessions, facilitated by trained moderators, were recorded and transcribed. An inductive thematic analysis approach was used to code the data and generate themes/sub-themes. Nineteen patients participated in four focus groups (two in English, two in French). Th

"Heartbreak and Frustration'' experiences of healthcare providers caring for pregnant women with sickle cell disease in Uganda.

INTRODUCTION: Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a hereditary hemoglobinopathy that poses significant risks during pregnancy, leading to increased maternal complications such as Vaso-occlusive crises, acute chest syndrome, preeclampsia, preterm labor, and perinatal complications such as preterm births, low birthweights and mortality. The complexities surrounding the management of SCD extend beyond the clinical symptoms and require a comprehensive understanding of the social, emotional, and systemic factors that influence patient outcomes. While existing research has largely focused on the epidemiolo

User and Provider Experiences with a Digital Health Family Planning Counseling Tool for Women Living with HIV in Kenya.

Women living with HIV(WLHIV) have diverse and complex reproductive health needs that require patient-centered, informed decision-making. Digital tools to support reproductive life planning may improve reproductive health counseling and outcomes for these women. We evaluated user experiences with a self-administered, tablet-based family planning (FP) counseling tool as part of a digital health intervention implemented within a cluster randomized trial in Kenya. We conducted 10 focus group discussions with WLHIV (n = 95) who received the counseling tool and in-depth interviews (n = 10) with prov

Understanding barriers and facilitators to cervical cancer prevention among young Korean Women: A focus group interview study.

Cervical cancer is a largely preventable and controllable disease. Social perceptions regarding sexual experiences and gynecological visits contribute to stigma, which serves as a major barrier to screening and human papillomavirus vaccination. This study explored how stigma is formed and reinforced within sociocultural norms and personal psychological barriers. Focus group interviews were conducted with 14 Korean women aged 20-29 years, divided into screeners and non-screener groups, on November 23, 2024. Based on the transcriptions, Thematic analysis was performed on the transcripts to organ

Health Status of Lewy Body Dementia Caregivers Predicts Psychological Response to Peer Mentoring Intervention.

Individuals with Lewy body dementia (LBD) rely on family caregivers. Caregiving demands limit caregivers' ability to attend to their own health needs, increasing their vulnerability to the psychological effects of caregiving. We previously piloted a peer mentoring intervention with experienced (mentor) and less experienced (mentee) LBD caregivers. Matched mentor-mentee dyads spoke weekly for 16 weeks, guided by an intervention handbook. LBD knowledge and attitudes towards dementia improved post-intervention. We hypothesized that caregiver health status moderates response to peer mentoring. Pos

"We don't care because we are not sick": understanding youths perceptions of hypertension in urban South Africa.

BACKGROUND: The growing burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is largely driven by hypertension, with risk factors including poor diet, physical inactivity, tobacco use, psychological stress, and limited healthcare access. Early-life exposure to these risks contributes to adverse biological markers that increase hypertension susceptibility in adulthood. This study aimed to explore how young people in Soweto, Johannesburg, perceive hypertension risk, using the Health Belief Model (HBM) to understand their beliefs, attitudes, and barriers to prevention. METHODS: This

Adolescents and young adults dating and HIV perceptions: A phenomenological study in N'Djamena, Chad.

The study investigates the interplay between adolescent dating behaviours and HIV perceptions in Chad, where adolescents and young adults (AYA) aged 15-24 years are disproportionately affected. Four focus group discussions (n = 48) were conducted with high school students in N'Djamena, stratified into beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries of a peer education programme. Using a phenomenological approach and the Colaizzi method in ATLAS.ti, we examined lived experiences around relationships, risk behaviours, and prevention strategies. Distinct gender differences emerged in dating motivations: male

Bridging the gap: exploring students' needs, knowledge, and preferences for delivering comprehensive sexuality education in Sierra Leone.

BACKGROUND: Sierra Leone, like many developing countries, faces challenges in providing comprehensive sexuality education to its students. Despite the growing recognition of the importance of comprehensive sexuality education in promoting sexual health and well-being, there is a lack of standardised and accessible programs in many parts of the country. This study examined the disconnect between students' needs (both perceived and real), their knowledge, and their preferences for delivering comprehensive sexuality education in Sierra Leone. METHODS: This qualitative study, which was part of a

'Information is power': A qualitative exploration of co-producing education resources about cardiovascular disease in partnership with women living with lupus.

BACKGROUND: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune condition impacting 1 in 2000 people. As 90% of SLE patients are women, and racialized populations experience significantly poorer outcomes, we characterize SLE as gendered, racialized, invisible and episodic. Further compounding these inequities is an elevated risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) among this population. Crucially, there is a dearth of research evidence as well as public knowledge pertaining to its aetiology and manifestations in women. Indeed, CVD is a primary driver of morbidity and mortality in SLE. Despi

Developing a male-specific counselling curriculum for HIV treatment in Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Men living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa have sub-optimal engagement in antiretroviral therapy (ART) programs. Generic ART counselling in Malawi does not meet men's needs. METHODS: We developed a male-specific ART counselling curriculum, adapted from the Malawi Ministry of Health curriculum, based on literature review of men's needs and motivations for treatment. We piloted the curriculum with men in six communities, with focus group discussions to assess knowledge of ART, motivators and barriers to care, and perceptions of the male-specific curriculum (n=85). We analysed data in

A Peer-to-Peer Collaborative Learning Approach for the Implementation of Evidence-Informed Interventions to Improve HIV-Related Health Outcomes.

The nationwide scale-up of evidence-based and evidence-informed interventions has been widely recognized as a crucial step in ending the HIV epidemic. Although the successful delivery of interventions may involve intensive expert training, technical assistance (TA), and dedicated funding, most organizations attempt to replicate interventions without access to focused expert guidance. Thus, there is a grave need for initiatives that meaningfully address HIV health disparities while addressing these inherent limitations. Here, the Health Resources and Services Administration HIV/AIDS Bureau (HRS
