Regional brain structural abnormality in meal-related functional dyspepsia patients: a voxel-based morphometry study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Brain dysfunction in functional dyspepsia (FD) has been identified by multiple neuroimaging studies. This study aims to investigate the regional gray matter density (GMD) changes in meal-related FD patients and their correlations with clinical variables, and to explore the possible influence of the emotional state on FD patients's brain structures. METHODS: Fifty meal-related FD patients and forty healthy subjects (HS) were included and underwent a structural magnetic resonance imaging scan. Voxel-based morphometry analysis was employed to identify the cerebral structure

Resilience to childhood maltreatment is associated with increased resting-state functional connectivity of the salience network with the lingual gyrus.

The experience of childhood maltreatment is related to an increased risk of developing a variety of psychiatric disorders, as well as a change in the structure of the brain. However, not much is known about the neurobiological basis of resilience to childhood maltreatment. This study aims to identify resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) patterns specific for resilience to childhood maltreatment, focusing on the default mode and salience network and networks seeded from the amygdala and left dorsomedial prefrontal cortex. Resting-state functional MRI scans were obtained in 33 individual

Increased resting-state functional connectivity between the anterior cingulate cortex and the precuneus in panic disorder: resting-state connectivity in panic disorder.

BACKGROUND: The structural and functional abnormalities of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) have been reported in panic disorder (PD). Patients with PD have shown decreased gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) concentration in the ACC. The GABA concentration in the ACC was found to be associated with default mode network (DMN) activity in normal human subjects. Therefore, it was hypothesized that the DMN would show abnormal activity in PD. METHODS: We identified and compared the functional connectivity maps with seed region of interest (ROI) located in the perigenual area of ACC between the 11 p

Neurofunctional correlates of esthetic and moral judgments.

Recent neuroimaging studies indicate that there may be common ground for esthetic and moral judgments. However, because previous studies focused on either esthetic or moral judgments and did not compare the two directly, the issue remains open whether a common ground actually exists. We employed functional magnetic resonance imaging in order to study, in a within-subjects design, the potential equivalence of esthetic and moral judgments. One-line verses from poems and short moral statements were used as stimuli. Our results suggest a common basis for the two judgment categories, revealing comp

Sustaining high acetylcholine levels in the frontal cortex, but not retrosplenial cortex, recovers spatial memory performance in a rodent model of diencephalic amnesia.

Although the thalamus and/or mammillary bodies are the primary sites of neuropathology in cases of diencephalic amnesia such as Wernicke Korsakoff Syndrome (WKS), there is also functional deactivation of certain cortical regions that contribute to the cognitive dysfunction. Acetylcholine (ACh) is a key neurotransmitter that modulates neural processing within the cortex and between the thalamus and cortex. In the pyrithiamine-induced thiamine deficiency (PTD) rat model of WKS, there are significant reductions in cholinergic innervation and behaviorally stimulated ACh efflux in the frontal (FC)

Reduced dorsal anterior cingulate cortical activity during emotional regulation and top-down attentional control in generalized social phobia, generalized anxiety disorder, and comorbid generalized social phobia/generalized anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Generalized social phobia (GSP) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) are both associated with emotion dysregulation. Research implicates dorsal anterior cingulate cortex in both explicit emotion regulation (EER) and top-down attentional control (TAC). Although studies have examined these processes in GSP or GAD, no work compares findings across the two disorders or examines functioning in cases comorbid for both disorders (GSP/GAD). Here we compare the neural correlates of EER and TAC in GSP, GAD, and GSP/GAD. METHODS: Medication-free adults with GSP (EER n = 19; TAC n = 18), GA

Damage to the right dorsal anterior cingulate cortex induces panic disorder.

Brain imaging studies suggest that panic disorder (PD) is mediated by several brain regions, including the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). In the present report we describe a patient who experienced a panic attack during awake surgery (case 1) and another patient who developed PD after surgery and radiotherapy (case 2). In case 1, the patient experienced repeated panic attacks when the tumor at the upper border of right dorsal ACC was removed during awake surgery. In case 2, the patient developed PD at six months after surgery and Cyberknife radiotherapy. MRI examination revealed that the dor

Cingulate, frontal, and parietal cortical dysfunction in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Functional and structural neuroimaging have identified abnormalities of the brain that are likely to contribute to the neuropathophysiology of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In particular, hypofunction of the brain regions comprising the cingulo-frontal-parietal cognitive-attention network have been consistently observed across studies. These are major components of neural systems that are relevant to ADHD, including cognitive/attention networks, motor systems, and reward/feedback-based processing systems. Moreover, these areas interact with other brain circuits that have bee

Chronic and treatment-resistant depression: a study using arterial spin labeling perfusion MRI at 3Tesla.

The aim of the present study was to compare patients displaying chronic and treatment-resistant depression with healthy controls, using the resting-state perfusion with arterial spin labeling (ASL) perfusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique at 3T. The study focused on the subgenual anterior cingulate cortex (sACC), which is a key component in the pathophysiology of depression. Six patients with chronic and treatment-resistant depression and six healthy control subjects were included. ASL is an innovative imaging technique which sidesteps the limitations of other functional neuroimagi

Cingulate gyrus morphology in children and adolescents with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

Alcohol consumption during pregnancy can lead to a variety of cognitive and other birth defects, collectively termed fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), and including the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). This study examined the impact of gestational alcohol exposure on the morphology of the cingulate gyrus, given this region's role in cognitive control, attention, and emotional regulation, all of which are affected in children with FASD. Thirty-one youth (ages 8-16) with histories of heavy prenatal alcohol exposure (n=21) and demographically matched comparison subjects (n=10) underwent struc

Tryptophan breakdown pathway in bipolar mania.

The upregulation of the initiating step of the kynurenine pathway was demonstrated in postmortem anterior cingulated cortex from individuals with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. However, the tryptophan and kynurenine metabolism in bipolar mania patients especially in drug naïve state has not been clearly explored. This study explored the plasma tryptophan and its competing amino acids, kynurenine, kynurenic acid and 3-hydroxyanthranillic acid and their association with psychopathological scores in 39 drug naïve and drug-free bipolar manic patients in comparison with 80 healthy controls. Performance monitoring in the anterior cingulate is not all error related: expectancy deviation and the representation of action-outcome associations.

Several converging lines of evidence suggest that the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is selectively involved in error detection or evaluation of poor performance. Here we challenge this notion by presenting event-related potential (ERP) evidence that the feedback-elicited error-related negativity, an ERP component attributed to the ACC, can be elicited by positive feedback when a person is expecting negative feedback and vice versa. These results suggest that performance monitoring in the ACC is not limited to error processing. We propose that the ACC acts as part of a more general performanc

Enhanced occipital and anterior cingulate activation in men but not in women during exposure to angry and fearful male faces.

Blood-oxygenation-level-dependent signal was measured with functional magnetic resonance imaging in 24 healthy young subjects (12 men and 12 women) during viewing of angry, fearful, and neutral male and female face pictures. Exposure to angry male as opposed to angry female faces activated the visual cortex and the anterior cingulate gyrus significantly more in men than in women. A similar sex-differential brain activation pattern was present during exposure to fearful but not neutral faces. Previous behavioral studies indicate enhanced physiological arousal in men but not in women during expo

Emotion-attention network interactions during a visual oddball task.

Emotional and attentional functions are known to be distributed along ventral and dorsal networks in the brain, respectively. However, the interactions between these systems remain to be specified. The present study used event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate how attentional focus can modulate the neural activity elicited by scenes that vary in emotional content. In a visual oddball task, aversive and neutral scenes were presented intermittently among circles and squares. The squares were frequent standard events, whereas the other novel stimulus categories o

Identification of the cerebral loci processing human swallowing with H2(15)O PET activation.

Lesional and electrophysiological data implicate a role for the cerebral cortex in the initiation and modulation of human swallowing, and yet its functional neuroanatomy remains undefined. We therefore conducted a functional study of the cerebral loci processing human volitional swallowing with 15O-labeled water positron emission tomography (PET) activation imaging. Regional cerebral activation was investigated in 8 healthy right handed male volunteers with a randomized 12-scan paradigm of rest and water swallows (5 ml/bolus, continuous infusion) at increasing frequencies of 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3

A neuropsychological theory of multiple systems in category learning.

A neuropsychological theory is proposed that assumes category learning is a competition between separate verbal and implicit (i.e., procedural-learning-based) categorization systems. The theory assumes that the caudate nucleus is an important component of the implicit system and that the anterior cingulate and prefrontal cortices are critical to the verbal system. In addition to making predictions for normal human adults, the theory makes specific predictions for children, elderly people, and patients suffering from Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, major depression, amnesia, or lesio

Post-traumatic mutism.

We report on the infrequent verbalisation disorder called "post-traumatic mutism" observed in 12 subjects with severe traumatic head injuries. These patients during the recovery of their conditions showed for a certain period a speechlessness even though some of them could communicate through gestures and writing. The nature and the possible mechanism of the disorder are discussed.

Effect of brain stimulation on aldosterone secretion in the rhesus monkey (Macaca Mulatta).

The lateral hypothalamus, and various sites within the limbic system and frontal lobe of the rhesus monkey brain were electrically stimulated using chronically implanted electrodes. A considerble increase in plasma aldosterone levels was observed after stimulation of the lateral hypothalamic area, certain localized sites in the cingulate area, and lower medial parts of the frontal lobe. Inactive sites included most of the amygdala, hippocampus, and basal ganglia, together with other areas within the frontal lobe and cingulate gyrus. Stimulation of all active areas was followed by an increase i
