Intramuscular Corticosteroid Therapy in the Treatment of Alopecia Areata: A Time-to-Event Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Intramuscular corticosteroids (IMC) have gained popularity for the treatment of severe alopecia areata (AA) in recent years; however, evidence on their efficacy and safety is still limited. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy, relapse rate, and tolerability of IMC in the treatment of AA, as well as factors associated with treatment outcomes. METHODS: Time-to-event analysis was performed on patients with severe, extensive, or rapidly progressive AA receiving IMC. The IMC regimen comprised triamcinolone acetonide 20-40 mg/mL injected every 4-6 weeks. The evaluated outcomes includ

Partial Alopecia Area Retains Bulge Hair Follicle Progenitor Cells in Indian Androgenetic Alopecia Patients.

BACKGROUND: Androgenic alopecia (AGA) is a pathological condition characterized by the progressive decrease of scalp hair follicle density. Completely bald areas of AGA scalp exhibit a drastically decreased number of progenitor cells. However, it is unknown when the progenitor cells begin to diminish in number during the progression of AGA. Despite the prevalence of AGA in 58% of the Indian male population, no study to date has characterized the hair follicle stem and progenitor cell populations in AGA patients in this ethnic group. AIMS AND OBJECTIVE: In this study, we tested the presence of

Effects of dietary supplements on androgenetic alopecia: a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, androgenetic alopecia (AGA) has emerged as a significant public health concern due to its high prevalence and progressive nature. In addition to progressive scalp thinning and hair loss, patients often experience psychological distress and diminished quality of life. While standard treatments such as finasteride and minoxidil are effective, their side effects and adherence issues limit long-term use, making the exploration of safe and accessible intervention strategies essential. Dietary supplements, claimed to promote hair growth by inhibiting androgen pathways an

Neurotensin counteracts hair growth inhibition induced by chronic restraint stress.

Stress has been considered as a potential trigger for hair loss through the neuroendocrine-hair follicle (HF) axis. Neurotensin (NTS), a neuropeptide, is known to be dysregulated in the inflammatory-associated skin diseases. However, the precise role of NTS in stress-induced hair loss is unclear. To investigate the function and potential mechanisms of NTS in stress-induced hair growth inhibition, we initially detected the expression of neurotensin receptor (Ntsr) and NTS in the skin tissues of stressed mice by RNA-sequencing and ELISA. We found chronic restraint stress (CRS) significantly decr

Insights into the Decontamination of Cocaine-Positive Hair Samples.

A highly discussed step in hair sample preparation for forensic analytics is the applied decontamination. The here presented investigations aim to gain insight and give recommendations on how to conduct this decontamination for the analysis of cocaine consumption in hair. Key insights were gained from the investigation of cocaine consumer hair, which was artificially contaminated in a humid atmosphere with 13C6 labelled cocaine and from cocaine powder contaminated hair. Several decontamination protocols were investigated, whereby the usage of a decontamination protocol consisting of multiple s

Melatonin mitigates neomycin-induced hair cell injury in zebrafish.

CONTEXT: Ototoxicity due to medications, such as aminoglycosides, is irreversible, and free radicals in the inner ear are assumed to play a major role. Because melatonin has an antioxidant property, we hypothesize that it might mitigate hair cell injury by aminoglycosides. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate whether melatonin has an alleviative effect on neomycin-induced hair cell injury in zebrafish (Danio rerio). METHODS: Various concentrations of melatonin were administered to 5-day post-fertilization zebrafish treated with 125 μM neomycin for 1 h. Surviving hair cells

Effects of body region and time on hair cortisol concentrations in chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes).

Hair cortisol concentrations (HCC) are increasingly recognized as an integrated measure of the systemic cortisol secretion. Yet, we still know very little about confounding effects on HCC in animals. The present study therefore used hair from semi-wild and zoo living chimpanzees to investigate (1) intra-individual variability of HCC (body-region effect), and (2) the stability of HCC along the hair shaft (traditionally called the washout effect). Our results indicate that absolute HCC varied substantially between certain body regions, but a factor analysis revealed that these HCC differences we

Anatomical basis of a congenital hearing impairment: basilar papilla dysplasia in the Belgian Waterslager canary.

Recent investigations into the anatomy of the inner ear of Belgian Waterslager canaries (BWC) have demonstrated myriad malformations associated with dysgenesis of the pars inferior of the otocyst. In those studies, the surface anatomy of BWC's basilar papilla and sacculus was examined utilizing scanning electron microscopy. In the present investigation, we utilized both light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy to describe the cross sectional anatomical pathology of the BWC's basilar papilla. Examination of the BWC's organ of Corti revealed numerous dysmorphologies: 1) hair cells f

Alopecia universalis as a single abnormality in an inbred Pakistani kindred.

A Pakistani kindred comprising 5 generations contained 9 males and 4 females with alopecia universalis as a single abnormality without any associated defects. The skin biopsy from the scalp showed hair follicles without hair. Analysis of the pedigree is strongly suggestive of autosomal recessive inheritance, and consanguineous loops could account for all affected persons being homozygous for the abnormal allele.

Whole blood transcriptome profiling identifies candidate genes associated with alopecia in male giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca).

BACKGROUND: The giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) is a threatened species endemic to China. Alopecia, characterized by thinning and broken hair, mostly occurs in breeding males. Alopecia significantly affects the health and public image of the giant panda and the cause of alopecia is unclear. RESULTS: Here, we researched gene expression profiles of four alopecia giant pandas and seven healthy giant pandas. All pandas were approximately ten years old and their blood samples collected during the breeding season. A total of 458 up-regulated DEGs and 211 down-regulated DEGs were identified. KE

Neonatal hair profiling reveals a metabolic phenotype of monochorionic twins with selective intrauterine growth restriction and abnormal umbilical artery flow.

BACKGROUND: Selective intrauterine fetal growth restriction (sIUGR) in monochorionic diamniotic twins, especially types 2&3 with abnormal umbilical artery Doppler, results in increased risk of fetal/perinatal mortality and postnatal disability. We investigate whether the hair metabolome profiles of neonates were associated with the pathophysiological differences across the different clinical forms of sIUGR in twins. METHODS: Hair samples were collected at delivery from 10 pairs of type 1 sIUGR twins, 8 pairs of types 2&3 sIUGR twins, and 11 pairs of twins without sIUGR. The hair metabolome wa

Histopathology of the vestibular end organs after intratympanic gentamicin failure for Meniere's disease.

CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, this is the first report of the histopathology of the vestibular end organs following intratympanic gentamicin for intractable Meniere's disease. There was relative sparing of the utricular macula, compared with the cristae ampullares. However, the utricular macula exhibited severe hair cell loss. Clinically, the patient has been free from vertigo spells for 3 years following labyrinthectomy. OBJECTIVE: To describe the histopathology and morphometry of the vestibular end organs from a 59-year-old Meniere's patient who underwent transmastoid labyrinthectomy for re

The TNFRSF1B Connection: Implications for Androgenetic Alopecia Pathogenesis and Treatment.

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a prevalent form of hair loss with poorly understood mechanisms. This study investigates the association between the tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily member 1B (TNFRSF1B) gene and AGA, aiming to validate its potential causal relationship. Transcriptomic data from AGA patients were obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analyses, along with Weighted Gene Co-expression Network Analysis (WGCNA), were employed

Impact of Laboratory Work Up and Supplementation on Alopecia Patients: A Single-Center Retrospective Chart Review.

Evaluation of alopecia often includes laboratory testing for ferritin, thyroid stimulating hormone, vitamin D, and zinc as previous studies have found associations between non-scarring alopecia and vitamin deficiencies. These studies are limited by small sample sizes, and subsequent analyses showed conflicting results. This study aims to explore laboratory abnormalities in non-scarring alopecia and examine whether supplementation is associated with increased hair growth. A total of 131 patients completed at least two visits by a hair specialist at NYU’s Faculty Group Practice. They had q
