Chrysosporium pannorum (Link) Hughes is a soil keratinophilic fungus present in organic residues, on human skin surface and in the general environment of human beings. Clear evidence for the pathogenicity of this fungus for human beings was lacking. In 1999, a case of fungal infection in a chow-chow dog and its owner was published, where Chrysosporium pannorum (Link) Hughes was determined as the only possible infection trigger. The State Hygiene Institute in Bratislava repeatedly confirmed the cultivation results. Chrysosporium pannorum (Link) Hughes was detected in the material provided by a

BACKGROUND: Exophiala jeanselmei is a dematiaceous fungus that may cause invasive diseases, particularly among immunocompromised hosts. Most reports mention cutaneous or subcutaneous lesions, but no case of nail involvement due to this fungus has been reported until now.
CASE REPORT: A 60-year-old man presented with hyperkeratosis and black coloration of the nails of the two thumbs and the two big toes of 4 years' duration. He was a renal transplant recipient and had been treated with prednisone and azathioprine. E. jeanselmei was present on direct examination, then isolated in cultures on re

Very little has been published on knuckle pads and the cosmetic and psychological effects they can have. In children, most knuckle pads are considered to be idiopathic; however, familial cases as well as those caused by trauma have been described. We report a 14-year-old African American girl with a 3-year history of slowly enlarging hyperkeratotic nodules over multiple finger joints and on the lateral aspects of several fingers. These lesions were initially confined to the patient's left hand but subsequently involved the right hand. The patient and her mother denied any unusual hobbies or sp

A 33-year-old man presented with very itchy red papules on the back of his hands and forearms. These papules appeared about 90 min after he had cleaned his aquarium in which he kept native fish and watersnails. He had obtained the watersnails some weeks before from a nearby pond. Examination of water from the aquarium revealed cercariae. The clinical diagnosis of cercarial dermatitis was corroborated. Cercarial dermatitis has repeatedly been seen in swimmers but not in aquarists keeping fish in a home aquarium.

Awareness of latex sensitization is increasing in both the medical and the general community. Nonimmunologic irritant contact dermatitis, often found on the hands of healthcare workers who wear latex gloves, is the most common feature of sensitivity. The exact latex antigen(s) to blame have not been clearly delineated, but risk factors have been established that can be used to identify persons susceptible to a hypersensitivity reaction. The severity of a reaction depends on the route of exposure; mucosal and visceral exposure poses the greatest risk of reaction. Thus, patients requiring multip

The clinical and histological features of 'mechanic's hands' are described in a patient with polymyositis characterized serologically by antibodies to histidyl tRNA synthetase (Jo-1). Although described in the past in association with polymyositis, these distinctive cutaneous lesions have only recently been associated with the 'anti-synthetase syndrome'. It is becoming apparent that recognition of subsets within the spectrum of polymyositis/dermatomyositis characterized by certain clinical and serological features not only have prognostic significance, but also may provide insights into mechan

Dermatopathia pigmentosa reticularis is a rare heritable disorder consisting of a triad of cutaneous findings including reticulate hyperpigmentation, noncicatricial alopecia, and onychodystrophy. In addition to this triad, other variable features of dermatopathia pigmentosa reticularis have been described, including adermatoglyphia, hypohidrosis or hyperhidrosis, and palmoplantar hyperkeratosis. Only 10 cases have been described in the world literature to date, and no clear inheritance pattern has been demonstrated. We present a patient with the classic features of the dermatopathia pigmentosa

We report a case of an unusual presentation of granuloma annulare involving the fingers of both hands. The configuration and site is probably related to the particular nature of the man's work as a milkman.

A unique purpuric--golden lesion on the hypothenar eminence of each palm is described in a mogul skier. These painful lesions, resulting from vigorous repetitive pole planting in the "bumps" at a ski area, are postulated to represent a form of localized soft tissue injury.

The preliminary results of a survey carried out by the Institutes of Dermatology of Bari and Florence Universities and by the Clinica del Lavoro of Milan University are analyzed. The survey, whose aim is to identify the causes of contact dermatitis on housewives' hands and whose conclusions are forecasted for June 1990, will examine 1,650 female people, 1,050 of which are ill and 600 are case-controls. The results of the first 617 cases (514 ill and 103 case-controls) are reported. The anamnesis has shown that the hands (in 488 cases) are the most affected part of the body, that the most frequ
