A quantitative evaluation of refractoriness within a reentrant circuit during ventricular tachycardia. Relation to termination.

Programmed ventricular stimuli introduced during sustained monomorphic ventricular tachycardia frequently reset the tachycardia, resulting in a less than fully compensatory pause. A resetting response curve is generated when the set of return cycles is evaluated as the function of the coupling intervals of the extrastimuli delivered during the ventricular tachycardia. If the stimulated wave front encounters tissue within the tachycardia circuit that is not fully recovered, interval-dependent conduction changes should occur producing an increasing resetting response pattern. We quantified the m

Applications of nonlinear dynamics to clinical cardiology.

(1) Nonlinear mechanisms may apply both to the understanding of SA-AV node interactions and to bifurcations leading to certain types of AV block. (2) The fractal His-Purkinje system serves as the structural substrate for the generation of the broadband, inverse power-law spectrum of the stable ventricular depolarization (QRS) waveform. (3) Fractal anatomy is also seen in multiple other systems: pulmonary, hepatobiliary, renal, etc. Fractal morphogenesis may reflect a type of critical phenomenon that results in the generation of these irregular, but self-similar structures. (4) Self-similar (fr

[The sick sinus syndrome. What causes it?].

The basic disorder in sinoatrial disease is a functional and/or anatomical defect in the sinus node and the atrium respectively. The clinical feature includes palpitations, angina pectoris, heart failure, giddiness and systemic emboli. Associated diseases are coronary heart disease, hypertension, diphtheria, myocarditis or rheumatic fever. Diagnosis is primarily made by clinical symptoms and conventional or long term ECG-monitoring. However, impaired sinus node function including sinusbradycardia, sinus arrest, sinoatrial block and the bradycardia-tachycardia syndrome cannot easily be assessed

Spatiotemporal gene expression and cellular dynamics of the developing human heart.

Heart development relies on topologically orchestrated cellular transitions and interactions, many of which remain poorly characterized in humans. Here, we combined unbiased spatial and single-cell transcriptomics with imaging-based validation across postconceptional weeks 5.5 to 14 to uncover the molecular landscape of human early cardiogenesis. We present a high-resolution transcriptomic map of the developing human heart, revealing the spatial arrangements of 31 coarse-grained and 72 fine-grained cell states organized into distinct functional niches. Our findings illuminate key insights into

Noninvasive Electrocardiography in the Perinatal Mouse.

Electrocardiography (ECG) has long been relied upon as an effective and reliable method of assessing cardiovascular (and cardiopulmonary) function in both human and animal models of disease. Individual heart rate, rhythm, and regularity, combined with quantitative parameters collected from ECG, serve to assess the integrity of the cardiac conduction system as well as the integrated physiology of the cardiac cycle. This article provides a comprehensive description of the methods and techniques used to perform a noninvasive ECG on perinatal and neonatal mouse pups as early as the first postnatal

Effects of autonomic blockade on the inotropic and electrophysiologic response to digitoxin in the intact dog.

Inotropic and electrophysiologic effects in dogs of a single dose of digitoxin with and without autonomic blockade with propranolol plus atropine were observed for 8 hr. Left heart catheterization and His bundle registration were performed in 14 Labrador dogs anesthetized with pentobarbital. Pacing and programmed electrical stimulation were used to determine heart rate-independent changes in dP/dt, intra-atrial, AV nodal, His-Purkinje, and intraventricular conduction velocity. The effective and the functional refractory periods of the atrium, and the functional nodal refractory period (AV-FRP)

Tbx3 is required for outflow tract development.

Conotruncal and ventricular septal congenital heart anomalies result from defects in formation and division of the embryonic outflow tract. Cardiac remodeling during outflow tract and ventricular septation converts the tubular embryonic heart into a parallel circulatory system with an independent left ventricular outlet and right ventricular inlet. Tbx3 encodes a T-box-containing transcription factor expressed in the developing conduction system of the heart. Mutations in TBX3 cause ulnar-mammary syndrome. Here we show that mice lacking Tbx3 develop severe outflow tract defects, including conn

Delayed depolarization and histologic abnormalities underlie the Brugada syndrome.

Brugada syndrome (BrS) is a controversial disease whose pathophysiology is still far from being fully understood. Unlike other cardiological disorders, a definite etiology has not yet been established so that it could be summarized under two main chapters: "functional" or "organic", "repolarization" or "depolarization" disorder. Despite initial descriptions leaned towards the organic substrate and delayed depolarization features, functional and repolarization theories have attracted most of the Cardiological attention for many years. Data from electrocardiography, endocavitary tracings, electr
