Is Sex an Underrated Risk for Relapse in Substance Use Disorders?

Background: Sexualized substance use (SSU) describes the use of psychotropic substances in the context of sexual activity. Less is known about the role of sexualized substance use among individuals with substance use disorders (SUD) and its effect on the course of the disorder, e.g., regarding relapses after abstinence. Methods: A convenience sample of individuals undergoing SUD rehabilitation in Germany was surveyed. A questionnaire asked about SSU, sex as a risk factor for relapse, and the importance of sexuality in treatment. Results: N = 490 (30.1% female) participated; 55% of men and 63%

Is there an increased risk of preeclampsia using donor sperm, depending on sexual condition?

OBJECTIVE: An increased risk of preeclampsia has been described when performing donor intrauterine insemination. One of the possible causes is immunological tolerance to semen. Both lesbian and single women, who have theoretically lower exposure to seminal fluid than heterosexual women requesting artificial insemination with donor, sperm should have a higher incidence of preeclampsia, although this fact has not been analyzed previously. METHODS: The population under study consisted of 439 gestations <24 weeks, achieved with artificial insemination with donor sperm, performed in two different

Mental health in sexual minorities: Change over time in a Finnish population-based sample.

BACKGROUND: Sexual minorities have continuously been found to experience poorer mental health compared to the general population, despite promising changes in attitudes and legislation throughout the 21st century in many Western countries. The present study is one of the first to assess group-level changes over time in mental health among sexual minorities compared to their heterosexual counterparts. METHODS: We used four waves of a Finnish population-based survey spanning 16 years (2006-2022) to compare heterosexual and sexual minority adults on depression and anxiety symptoms, alcohol use,

The Survey Measurement of Sexual Orientation: Configurations of Sexual Identity and Attraction and Associations with Mental Health.

Purpose: This study aimed to examine how configurations of sexual identity and attraction are associated with mental health outcomes. Methods: Data came from the 2015, 2016, and 2017 waves of the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, one of the few nationally representative surveys to ask about sexual attraction. Sexual identity and attraction were combined into groups that are coincident (heterosexual-opposite gender attraction, gay/lesbian-same gender attraction, or bisexual-any multiple gender attraction) or branched (heterosexual-any same gender attraction, gay/lesbian-any opposite gende

Bisexual Men's Experiences with Discrimination, Internalized Binegativity, and Identity Affirmation: Differences by Partner Gender.

Bisexual individuals experience unique forms of discrimination related to their sexual orientation (e.g., anti-bisexual prejudice), which occurs from both heterosexual and gay/lesbian individuals. Bisexual individuals may experience stigma differently depending on the gender of their relationship or sexual partners, because they may be perceived as heterosexual if they have a partner of a different gender and as gay/lesbian if they have a partner of the same gender. The present longitudinal study investigated within-persons differences in anti-bisexual experiences, internalized binegativity, a

Congruence across Sexual Orientation Dimensions and Risk for Unintended Pregnancy among Adult U.S. Women.

OBJECTIVES: To date, no studies have investigated whether sexual minority women (SMW) are more likely to experience unintended pregnancies compared with their heterosexual peers. The aim of this study was to explore whether adult SMW were more likely to have unintended pregnancies compared with heterosexual women, to examine the role of identity-attraction congruence in unintended pregnancy risk, and to evaluate possible mediators. METHODS: Data on pregnancies to women ages 18 to 44 were drawn from the 2006 through 2013 National Survey of Family Growth (n = 25,403). Weighted logistic regressi

The relationship between temperament and sexual orientation.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between temperament and sexual orientation has been poorly characterized. We have used the Affective and Emotional Composite Temperament (AFECT) model to evaluate this association in a large population sample. METHODS: Data from 16,571 subjects between 21 and 45 years old (mean age=29.1±6.3 yrs, 69.4% females) was collected anonymously through Internet in Brazil. RESULTS: Regarding affective temperaments, male cyclothymics and dysphorics had the lowest percentage of people with heterosexual orientation and the highest percentages of people with bisexual and homos

Offspring searching for their sperm donors: how family type shapes the process.

BACKGROUND: This study examines the findings from the largest survey to date of donor-inseminated (DI) offspring and focuses on respondents' learning of the method of their conception and their desire to contact their donor. METHODS: Online questionnaires were completed by 741 DI offspring, of whom 61.8% have heterosexual parents and 38.2% have lesbian parents. Respondents were recruited via the Donor Sibling Registry, a non-profit US-based international registry that facilitates communication between donor-conceived offspring and their non-biological and biological relatives. Data were colle

Do shared etiological factors contribute to the relationship between sexual orientation and depression?

BACKGROUND: Gays, lesbians and bisexuals (i.e. non-heterosexuals) have been found to be at much greater risk for many psychiatric symptoms and disorders, including depression. This may be due in part to prejudice and discrimination experienced by non-heterosexuals, but studies controlling for minority stress, or performed in very socially liberal countries, suggest that other mechanisms must also play a role. Here we test the viability of common cause (shared genetic or environmental etiology) explanations of elevated depression rates in non-heterosexuals. METHOD: A community-based sample of

Prevalence of past homelessness, mental health and health risk behaviours among sexual minority young people in the UK: insights from the Millennium Cohort Study.

AIM: Despite evidence on higher risk for homelessness and worse mental health in sexual minority (SM) adolescents, no study has examined these associations using nationally-representative data in the UK. This study examined inequalities in the prevalence of past homelessness by sexual identity, and whether rates of poor mental health and health-risk behaviours (HRBs) differ by sexual identity and past homelessness in adolescents. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from the age 17 sweep of the UK-wide Millennium Cohort Study (N = 10,232, 51% female, 21% SM). Mental health was assesse

Patterns of injecting and non-injecting drug use by sexual behaviour in people who inject drugs attending services in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, 2013-2016.

BACKGROUND: Higher levels of drug use have been reported in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities, some of which can be explained by sexualised drug use, including 'chemsex'; the use of drugs before or during planned sexual activity to sustain, enhance, disinhibit or facilitate sex. We explored injecting and non-injecting drug use by sexual behaviour among people who inject drugs (PWID) in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. METHODS: Data were used from an unlinked-anonymous survey of PWID (2013-2016), where participants recruited through services self-completed a questio

Anal and penile condylomas in HIV-negative and HIV-positive men: clinical, histological and virological characteristics correlated to therapeutic outcome.

Clinical, histological and HPV DNA hybridization findings were analyzed for 73 homosexual and 38 heterosexual men attending for anal warts; therapy results were evaluated retrospectively for 76 of these patients. Concurrent anal and penile warts occurred most commonly in the heterosexual men (p < 0.001). While perianal warts were most common in heterosexuals (p < 0.05), intraanal warts were most common in homosexuals (p < 0.001). Altogether 23 homosexual men were HIV-infected; 13 HIV-positive men followed regarding therapeutic outcome were immunologically relatively intact with mean CD4 counts

Homelessness Among Sexual Minority Youth.

OBJECTIVES: This study examines the prevalence and types of homelessness experienced by sexual minority and heterosexual youth. Then, we examine whether state-level nondiscrimination policies and/or public attitudes on sexual diversity are associated with reduced homelessness among sexual minority youth. Finally, we investigate the differences in health risk behaviors at the intersections of sexual minority and homelessness status. METHODS: We conducted a secondary data analysis using a large population-based sample from 21 states collected in the 2017 and 2019 Youth Risk Behavior Surveys. Se

Women of diverse sexual identities admit to eating disorder treatment with differential symptom severity but achieve similar clinical outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Sexual minority (SM) women may be at increased risk for certain eating disorder (ED) symptoms and report distinct body image concerns compared to heterosexual women. However, it is unclear how such symptoms differ across sexual orientations in treatment-seeking women, or if there are differences in treatment outcomes. This study examined group differences in (1) ED symptomatology at admission in a disaggregated sample of SM and heterosexual women presenting for ED treatment and (2) treatment outcomes. METHODS: Adult women who admitted to higher levels of ED treatment across 48 loca

E-cigarette Use Initiation by Sexual Identity Change and Stability Among US Adults.

INTRODUCTION: Incorporating sexual identity fluidity and stability into the understanding of tobacco use patterns by sexual minority populations is particularly important, but less is known about how changes and stability in sexual identity relate to e-cigarette initiation. METHODS: Using three waves of the US Population Assessment of Tobacco Health Study (Waves 4-6 [2016-2021]), we examined the association of sexual identity change and stability with e-cigarette initiation among adults who never vaped at Wave 4 (N = 11 554). Changes in sexual identity were defined based on identity at Waves
