Tailoring PEGDA/gelatin hydrogels with silver nanoparticles: Mechanical characterization and bacterial inhibition studies.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are promising antimicrobial agents for combating bacterial infections in vitro and in vivo. This study explores the mechanical properties of PEGDA/gelatin hybrid hydrogels synthesized with varying Ag concentrations via electron beam irradiation and their bacterial interactions at the single-cell level, in real-time and in situ. Increased AgNPs concentration slightly alters the mechanical properties of these hydrogels, which are engineered to mimic human skin. Infrared microspectroscopy reveals that silver ions interact with PEGDA and gelatin before irradiation, aff…

High-resolution 3D printing of modified pullulan elastic hydrogels via solvent-induced shrinkage.

3D-printable hydrogels confront two core bottlenecks: the trade-off among high printing resolution, fabrication efficiency, and structural fidelity, as well as the inherently poor mechanical performance of conventional hydrogel materials. Herein, we fabricated a dual-network photo-crosslinkable pullulan-based hydrogel system, in which the mass ratio of Pul-MA to uHMW Pul-NB and solid content jointly govern the printability and mechanical behaviors of hydrogel inks. A simple ethanol post-treatment induces relatively homogeneous volumetric shrinkage within printed architectures. Specifically, tr…

Dual carboxylic ionization driven MCC/MAA/IA hydrogels for enhanced oral insulin delivery.

Oral delivery of insulin is hindered by enzymatic degradation and poor intestinal permeability. In this study, pH-responsive semi-interpenetrating network (semi-IPN) hydrogels based on microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), methacrylic acid (MAA), and itaconic acid (IA) were developed to enable site-specific intestinal release. The system leverages the differential ionization of MAA and IA to induce sequential network expansion through carboxyl group deprotonation. Hydrogels were synthesized via free radical polymerization using N, N'-methylene bisacrylamide as a crosslinker. The optimized formulat…

Harnessing biopolymeric double network hydrogels for cartilage repair: a review of current strategies.

Hydrogels with a double network (DN) structure that are based on carbohydrates have shown potential as scaffolds for the regeneration of cartilage. We postulate that these hydrogels can aid in the repair of cartilage and sustain the regeneration of tissue because of their ability to hold large quantities of water and large amounts of bioactive molecules. Some recent preclinical studieswith DN hydrogels that have been modified with growth factors, other biological molecules, and or therapeutic agents have shown enhanced growth of the cartilage tissue, hydration, and structural integrity of the …

Graphene-based porous hydrogels with a tunable piezoresistive response for wearable strain sensing.

This study reports the synthesis of porous hydrogels templated by self-assembled, percolating graphene networks formed through the spontaneous exfoliation of graphite at oil-water interfaces. The resulting graphene-stabilized emulsions yield an open-cell hydrogel architecture that enables efficient stress-dependent modulation of electrical pathways. Compression testing and electrical characterization revealed a pronounced reduction in resistance under strain, producing a robust and reliable piezoresistive response with a gauge factor of approximately 13 at 5% strain. Cyclic compression-relaxat…

Fabrication of Indole-3-propionic acid loaded hydrogels for spinal cord injury repair.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating neurological condition with an exceptionally high disability rate. The clinical management of SCI remains suboptimal primarily owing to both the inhibitory characteristics of the post-injury microenvironment and inherently limited regenerative ability. In this study, we report an indole-3-propionic acid (IPA) loaded polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate (PEGDA)/lysine hydrogel for repairing spinal cord injury. Compressive Young's moduli of hydrogels can be precisely tuned by adjusting the compositional ratios. The IPA loaded hydrogels exhibits not only ex…
