BACKGROUND: Interscalene brachial plexus block, the pain relief standard for shoulder surgery, is an invasive technique associated with important complications. The subomohyoid anterior suprascapular block is a potential alternative, but evidence of its comparative analgesic effect is sparse. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this investigation was to assess, with a descriptive three-dimensional evaluation, the volume of upper airway (UAWV) and the volume of craniofacial structures in adult patients suffering from obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and compare them to the corresponding findings in adults with no sleep disorders.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample consisted of 54 adult males, 27 suffering from OSA diagnosed by means of the Apnoea Hypopnea Index and 27 with no history of sleep disorders. All subjects had a cone beam computerized tomography scan performed with the same head position.

OBJECTIVES: To analyze oncologic and functional outcomes after supracricoid laryngectomy with cricohyoidoepiglottopexy (SCL-CHEP) in glottic carcinoma with anterior commissure (AC) involvement, to determine predictive factors, and to compare results with those reported for other therapeutic strategies.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis included all patients who underwent SCL-CHEP for glottic squamous cell carcinoma with anterior commissure involvement in our institution, between 2000 and 2014. Swallowing function was evaluated on the DOSS (Dysphagia Outcomes and Severity Scale).

The authors report their experience with hyomandibulopexia for lingual repositioning in patients with the sleep apnea syndrome. The technique was used 12 times in 11 men and 1 woman and a maximum follow-up of 3.4 years. Hypomandibulopexia was performed as first intention therapy 7 times with or without uvulo-palato-pharyngoplasty. The long-term follow-up of eight patients with established subglottic stenosis managed with a composite hyoid-sternohyoid graft is reported. Four of these patients were children. All but one of the patients were extubated within four months of surgery. The reconstructed airway is shown to grow with age and re-stenosis has not occurred. Apart from post-operative granulation tissue at the repair site, the major complication has been a breathy voice in two children due to overwidening of the larynx.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose was to evaluate the presence of gas in the tissue adjacent to the laryngeal structures, "the gas bubble sign", in cases of hanging as a diagnostic indicator of neck trauma.
METHODS: In this study, post-mortem CT (PMCT) scans and autopsies of 35 victims of hanging were examined to reveal age-dependent changes, laryngeal fracture, fracture location and the presence of gas. A matched group with cardiac arrest or intoxication was used as controls (n = 35). An autopsy was performed in each case.
