BACKGROUND: Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMN) are commonly managed by community surgeons at diagnosis. There is variability in the treatment of LAMN, both by community and specialist providers. PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Peritoneal metastases may occur from a majority of cancers that occur within the abdomen or pelvis. When cancer spread to the peritoneal surfaces is documented, a decision regarding palliation vs. an aggressive approach using cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and perioperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy must be made. Colorectal peritoneal metastases (CPM) are common in colorectal cancer patients. This article aims to provide GRADE guidelines for the use of hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) in two clinical situations: (1) To determine the value of adjuvant HIPEC for the prevention of CPM in high-risk colorectal cancer patients; (2) to determine the impact on survival of cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC followed by adjuvant systemic chemotherapy as compared to systemic chemotherapy alone in patients with CPM.
