We investigated the effect of exogenous corticotropin-releasing factor on plasma levels of ACTH and cortisol in 13 patients with ACTH-secreting pituitary adenomas (Cushing's disease) and in 9 patients with other forms of Cushing's syndrome. The clinical features and prolactin levels of 114 patients, including five men, who had prolactin-secreting adenomas are presented. The serum gonadotropin response to LH-RH (100 mug e.v.) in a group of women with various types of amenorrhea was critically evaluated. We report a case of 35-year old female patient with recurrent depressive disorder and Cushing's syndrome. MRI of the brain revealed a microadenoma of the pituitary gland. After neurosurgery the serum levels of cortisol went back to normal and the clinical and mental state of the patient improved rapidly. Depressive episodes require additional diagnostics to exclude somatic etiology.

The human GH-variant (hGH-V) gene, a member of the GH-PRL gene family, is expressed by the placenta during the second and third trimesters of gestation. The secreted hGH-V protein differs from pituitary GH (hGH-N) by only 13 amino acids.
