[Wellbeing, health and autonomy in old age: the Basal IDA Study (Interdisciplinary Aging Study)].

Current research on successful aging reflects a multicriteria approach, although a consensus on the interrelationship between different factors has not yet been achieved. The longitudinal-sequential study presented here aims at identifying psychological, biological and sociobiographical predictors of well-being, health and autonomy in old age and their interdependency. The concern of this study is thus a multidisciplinary approach including psychology, psychiatry, geriatrics and sports sciences. The ongoing study is described and first findings are reported. Four hundred and forty-two people,

Prognostic value of initial psychological assessment for long-term outcomes in multiple trauma patients: a retrospective cohort study using posttraumatic growth, disability acceptance, and resilience scales.

BACKGROUND: Multiple trauma, resulting from high-energy traumatic events such as traffic accidents or falls from height, involves severe injuries to multiple body parts and is often associated with high mortality and long-term psychological sequelae, posing significant challenges to patients' quality of life and functional recovery. Posttraumatic growth, as a positive psychological concept, refers to positive psychological changes following trauma, including enhanced personal strength and improved relationships. Initial psychological assessment is used in trauma care for early risk identificat

Psychological Therapy for People with Tinnitus: A Scoping Review of Treatment Components.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus is associated with depression and anxiety disorders, severely and adversely affecting the quality of life and functional health status for some people. With the dearth of clinical psychologists embedded in audiology services and the cessation of training for hearing therapists in the UK, it is left to audiologists to meet the psychological needs of many patients with tinnitus. However, there is no universally standardized training or manualized intervention specifically for audiologists across the whole UK public healthcare system and similar systems elsewhere across the w

The Role of Identity and Gender Beliefs in Self-Identification of Abuse for Male Victims of IPV.

Men experience numerous barriers in seeking help or resources after intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization, with one barrier being a reluctance or lack of ability to identify that they have been victims of IPV. This study examines factors relating to male victims of IPV self-identification of abuse. Using a gender socialization approach, demographics and facets of masculine honor ideology were tested to see whether they were significantly related to self-identifying as experiencing abuse in their relationship. Using a sample of 289 men, the frequency of individuals who self-identified a

What has the new 11th revision of International Classification of Diseases classification brought in the categorization of female sexual dysfunctions?

In January 2022, the classification of female sexual dysfunctions under the new eleventh revision of International Classification of Diseases came into force. Its definitive integration into practice is expected after a 5-year transition period. The new nomenclature is based on a circular model of female sexual activity, eliminating the Cartesian-dualistic concept of separating individual pathophysiological entities with „non-organic“ and „organic“ etiology. Sexual dysfunctions are evaluated as a complex interaction of psychological, interpersonal, social, cultural, physiological, and by gende

Neurological deficits in children: medical risk factors and lead exposure.

A study of possible undue neurobehavioral effects of low-level lead exposure was performed in Danish school children who entered first grade in 1982. Lead absorption was found to relate to impaired psychological test performance and difficulties at school. However, this relationship was confounded by medical risk factors for neurological deficit. Such factors were used as exclusionary criteria before psychological testing and were selected a prior on the basis of a critical evaluation of known etiologies of neurobehavioral dysfunction. Children characterized by a medical risk factor tended to

Research on the Identification of Road Hypnosis Based on the Fusion Calculation of Dynamic Human-Vehicle Data.

Driver factors are the main cause of road traffic accidents. For the research of automotive active safety, an identification method for road hypnosis of a driver of a car with dynamic human-vehicle heterogeneous data fusion calculation is proposed. Road hypnosis is an unconscious driving state formed by the combination of external environmental factors and the psychological state of the car driver. When drivers fall into a state of road hypnosis, they cannot clearly perceive the surrounding environment and make various reactions in time to complete the driving task. The safety of humans and ca

[Cognitive, emotional and behavioral impact of an uncertain outcome after study of BRCA1/2: review of the literature].

BACKGROUND: Recent advances in oncogenetics have enabled the development of tests for predisposition to breast and ovarian cancers. Where no mutation has been identified in the BRCA1 or 2 genes, the proband (first person tested in a family with a genetic risk) can receive an uncertain outcome: negative inconclusive or identification of a variant of unknown clinical significance. From the demonstration of such outcomes, their psychological impact has been studied among women concerned. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to summarize the results of studies about the impact of delivering

Child sexual abuse: Raising awareness and empathy is essential to promote new public health responses.

Child sexual abuse is a major global public health concern, affecting one in eight children and causing massive costs including depression, unwanted pregnancy, and HIV. The gravity of this global issue is reflected by the United Nations' new effort to respond to sexual abuse in the 2015 Sustainable Development Goals. The fundamental policy aims are to improve prevention, identification, and optimal responses to sexual abuse. As shown in our literature review, policymakers face difficult challenges because child sexual abuse is hidden, psychologically complex, and socially sensitive. This artic

Psychogenic Paroxysmal Nonepileptic Events in Children: A Review.

BACKGROUND: Paroxysmal nonepileptic events are common in children. Events with a psychological basis, historically referred to as pseudoseizures, are a large subset of paroxysmal nonepileptic events. METHODS: A review of the relevant pediatric and adult literature was performed. RESULTS: It was found that these events have many semioloigc features similar to epileptic events and can be challenging to correctly identify. The use of a detailed history in combination with video encephalography and knowledge of psychogenic paroxysmal nonepileptic events will facilitate making the correct diagnos

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment experience in Bedford East - audit and reaudit.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can develop following exposure to a stressful event of an exceptionally threatening or catastrophic nature. Symptoms experienced by PTSD suffers can include re-experiencing the trauma through intrusive 'flashbacks' and recurrent dreams or nightmares, avoidance of stimuli associated with the stressor, hyperarousal, emotional blunting and an inability to remember aspects of the period of exposure to the stressor. We performed an audit of the treatment of PTSD in patients under the care of the Bedford East Mental Health Team to examine the psychological and p

Dietary aspects of adverse reactions to foods in adults.

Dietary considerations play an important role in the diagnosis, treatment and management of immunologic and nonimmunologic reactions to foods. Food diaries and trial elimination diets may prove helpful in identifying the responsible foods. Elimination diets must be monitored carefully for nutritional adequacy and should be used no longer than absolutely necessary; in some instances appropriate vitamin and mineral supplementation may be necessary. Ideally the identification of foods that provoke symptoms should be confirmed by means of double-blind challenge testing. Avoidance of some problem f
