Gastric volvulus: unraveling the diagnosis with MPRs.

Gastric volvulus is a rare entity with a spectrum of acute and chronic clinical presentations. Body radiologists must be cognizant of the subtypes of gastric volvulus and identify potential complications. Mortality can be high if unrecognized from gastric necrosis, perforation, and sepsis. CT with multiplanar reformations is critical for complete evaluation beyond radiography and fluoroscopy. This article reviews clinical and imaging features of uncomplicated and complicated gastric volvulus, with the aim of guiding appropriate management.

Computed tomography imaging with the Adaptive Statistical Iterative Reconstruction (ASIR) algorithm: dependence of image quality on the blending level of reconstruction.

Computed tomography (CT) is a useful and widely employed imaging technique, which represents the largest source of population exposure to ionizing radiation in industrialized countries. Adaptive Statistical Iterative Reconstruction (ASIR) is an iterative reconstruction algorithm with the potential to allow reduction of radiation exposure while preserving diagnostic information. The aim of this phantom study was to assess the performance of ASIR, in terms of a number of image quality indices, when different reconstruction blending levels are employed. CT images of the Catphan-504 phantom were r

Accurate and efficient separation of left and right lungs from 3D CT scans: A generic hysteresis approach.

Separation of left and right lungs from binary segmentation is often necessary for quantitative image-based pulmonary disease evaluation. In this article, we present a new fully automated approach for accurate, robust, and efficient lung separation using 3-D CT scans. Our method follows a hysteresis setting that utilizes information from both lung regions and background gaps. First, original segmentation is separated by subtracting the gaps between left and right lungs, which are enhanced with Hessian filtering. Second, the 2-D separation manifold in 3-D image space is estimated based on the d

Post-mortem radiological CT identification based on classical ante-mortem X-ray examinations.

Radiological identification is important in forensic medicine. Identification using comparison of individualising structures with ante- and post-mortem conventional radiographs has been known for a long time. New radiological procedures such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are being increasingly used for identification. In this paper, a new comparative approach using various radiological methods is described and its application demonstrated. This new approach is the comparison of ante-mortem conventional radiographs with projected images calculated from post-mo

Fat suppression using frequency-sweep RF saturation and iterative reconstruction.

PURPOSE: To introduce an alternative idea for fat suppression that is suited both for low-field applications where conventional fat-suppression approaches become ineffective due to narrow spectral separation and for applications with strong B0 homogeneities. METHODS: Separation of fat and water is achieved by sweeping the frequency of RF saturation pulses during continuous radial acquisition and calculating frequency-resolved images using regularized iterative reconstruction. Voxel-wise signal-response curves are extracted that reflect tissue's response to RF saturation at different frequenci

Self-Supervised T2WI-Bridged Framework for Liver Segmentation and PDFF Prediction From US Images.

Proton Density Fat Fraction (PDFF) is the gold standard for non-invasive fatty liver diagnosis, but its reliance on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) limits broad clinical applicability. Motivated by the accessibility of B-mode Ultrasound (US) in fatty liver assessment, we propose a novel framework for liver segmentation and PDFF prediction from US images. To enhance generalization ability despite limited paired US-PDFF data, our framework integrates a cross-task self-supervised pretext task that extracts semantic features to guide echo intensity capture, benefiting both liver segmentation and

Alzheimer's Disease Diagnosis Based on Derivative Dynamic Time Warping Functional Connectivity Networks.

Due to the dynamic changes and complex time-delay characteristics of signal transmission between brain regions, this information can help identify early signs in individuals with Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Conventional Functional Connectivity Networks (FCN) may overlook interaction delays, leading to inaccurate representations of activity between brain regions. Recognizing the varying delays between patients and healthy individuals, we constructed a dynamic FCN using a Sliding Window based on Derivative Regularity Correlation (SWDRC) and a Functional Delay Network (FDN). These methods aim to im

Discordant ADC and DWI signal evolution in hyperacute stroke: implications for early imaging interpretation.

Here we report the first human observation of an imaging pattern in early hyperacute ischemic stroke, in which restricted diffusion is detectable on ADC maps before it becomes appreciable on DWI. The pattern—an ADC/DWI mismatch—was incidentally captured in a thalamic infarct during MRI obtained after a transient ischemic attack in a different vascular territory, enabling observation at an early hyperacute stage. Quantitative measurements at three time points demonstrated falling relative ADC and slower-rising relative DWI signal, aligning with thresholds for visual detectability. Although anti

Establishing the robustness metric as a scalable proxy for clinical relevance in medical AI explainability.

Despite high performance of deep learning in medical imaging applications, the critical lack of validated computational metrics for explainable AI (XAI) impedes clinical integration. To address this gap, our study introduces a multi-level validation framework to rigorously assess seven computational evaluation metrics applied to eight widely-used post-hoc attribution methods - spanning gradient-based, input attribution, and decomposition-based families - on large-scale structural MRI datasets (UK Biobank and ADNI) with two different benchmark tasks across several deep learning architectures. BAMT-Net: a boundary-aware multi-task framework for 3D breast ultrasound lesion segmentation and classification.

This study introduces an efficient Automated Breast Volume Scanner (ABVS) image analysis framework designed to address the limitations of traditional screening methods-namely low diagnostic accuracy, excessive reliance on operator expertise, and the increased workload associated with manual interpretation of three-dimensional imaging. Our primary objective was to develop a single, end-to-end network that simultaneously performs lesion segmentation and benign-malignant classification using a multi-task learning strategy. The proposed model integrates several innovations. A boundary-aware auxili

Unpaired multi-modal multi-label learning for detecting endometriosis signs.

Endometriosis is a widespread gynecological disorder causing severe pain and infertility, with diagnosis currently relying on slow, costly, and risky laparoscopy. This highlights the critical need for non-invasive imaging diagnostics using transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A key challenge is that patients typically receive only one scan modality in practice, despite TVUS and MRI offering differing diagnostic strengths for endometriosis signs like Pouch of Douglas (POD) obliteration and bowel nodules (BN). Previous work partially addressed this challenge by le

Enhancing Knee Disease Diagnosis via Multi-View Graph Representation With Multi-Task Pre-Training.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an indispensable tool for clinical knee examination, which often scans 2D stacked slices from multiple views. Radiologists typically locate lesion regions in one view, and then refer to other views to formulate a comprehensive diagnosis. However, existing computer-aided diagnosis methods fall short of identifying and fusing local regions in multi-view scans, leading to a decline in diagnostic performance and a heavy reliance on extensively annotated data. This paper introduces a novel framework that represents multi-view MRI scans as a knee graph, and conduc

Spatial-Aware Transformer-GRU Framework for Enhanced Glaucoma Diagnosis From 3D OCT Imaging.

Glaucoma, a leading cause of irreversible blindness, necessitates early detection for accurate and timely intervention to prevent irreversible vision loss. In this study, we present a novel deep learning framework that leverages the diagnostic value of 3D Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) imaging for automated glaucoma detection. In this framework, we integrate a pre-trained Vision Transformer on retinal data for rich slice-wise feature extraction and a bidirectional Gated Recurrent Unit for capturing inter-slice spatial dependencies. This dual-component approach enables comprehensive analysi

Multi-modality medical image classification with ResoMergeNet for cataract, lung cancer, and breast cancer diagnosis.

The variability in image modalities presents significant challenges in medical image classification, as traditional deep learning models often struggle to adapt to different image types, leading to suboptimal performance across diverse datasets. This is critical in the diagnosis of conditions like cataracts and cancers, where imaging data spans various modalities, including visible eye images for cataracts and histopathological images for cancers among others. Cataracts, a leading cause of blindness, and lung and breast cancers, major contributors to cancer-related deaths, require early detect
