[Should Tetanus Vaccine Booster be Given Earlier in Individuals Living with HIV?].

The incidence rate of tetanus has dramatically decreased following the discovery of the tetanus vaccine. A decennial booster dose is necessary to maintain the protective antibody levels after the primary vaccination schedule. The recommendations for the tetanus booster doses in adult "people living with acquired immune deficiency virus (HIV)" (PLWH) is similar to those for the general population. However, the duration of protective antibodies in PLWH is unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the factors affecting the response of HIV-infected individuals to tetanus vaccine and to evalu

Antibody response in patients with autoimmune inflammatory rheumatic disease after pneumococcal polysaccharide prime vaccination or revaccination.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to assess the pneumococcal antibody response in autoimmune inflammatory rheumatic disease (AIIRD) patients receiving 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV23) as a prime vaccination or revaccination. METHOD: Antibodies to 12 serotypes occurring in the commonly applied pneumococcal vaccines in Denmark were measured in AIIRD patients receiving biological disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug (bDMARD) treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, spondyloarthritis, or psoriatic arthritis. Patients with a non-protective level of pneumococcal antibodies (geome

Immunogenicity of Newcastle Disease Vaccine in Southern Ground-hornbill (Bucorvus leadbeateri).

The southern ground-hornbill (Bucorvus leadbeateri; hereafter SGH) is endangered in South Africa, Namibia, and Swaziland. Through a conservation program established in South Africa by the Mabula Ground Hornbill Project, wild populations are being re-established by the reintroduction of captive-reared birds. The SGH is susceptible to infection with avian avulavirus 1, which causes Newcastle disease (ND). Four different vaccines to protect against ND were administered through various vaccination schedules and evaluated by serologic monitoring to assess the efficiency and safety of various combin

Post-Chemotherapy Titer Status and Need for Revaccination After Treatment for Childhood Cancer.

Objectives. To evaluate the strategy of checking vaccine titers after completion of chemotherapy. Study Design. Retrospective review of pediatric oncology patients who completed chemotherapy. Demographics, post-chemotherapy titers, and absolute lymphocyte counts (ALCs) were analyzed. Results. Ninety patients met inclusion criteria, and 87% of patients had at least one titer checked. Comparing patients <7 years and those ≥7 years at diagnosis, there was no difference in incidence of negative titers except mumps; those <7 years old were more likely to have negative titers (58% vs 20%, P = .003).

Optimizing the timing of 4CMenB vaccination in adolescents and young adults based on immune persistence and booster response data.

Meningococcal disease has an incidence peak spread over several years during adolescence and young adulthood in the United States. Meningococcal serogroup B (MenB) vaccines have been introduced relatively recently and may help protect individuals in these age groups. Currently there is insufficient long-term experience to determine the duration of disease protection after any MenB vaccine. Understanding antibody persistence after primary vaccination and responses to booster can help inform MenB vaccination strategies and optimize disease prevention. Areas covered: Four studies in adolescents/y

Low Prevalence of Tuberculin Skin Test Boosting among Community Residents in Uganda.

Boosted tuberculin skin test (TST) reactions can be misclassified as new latent tuberculosis (TB) infection. To our knowledge, no study has evaluated the prevalence of TST boosting in a population-based sample in high TB burden settings. We determined the prevalence of TST boosting among urban residents in Uganda. We evaluated 99 participants with initial TST < 5 mm and repeated a skin test after 2 weeks. We found that only 2% had boosted TST reactions suggesting that most TST conversions could represent new TB infections in this high-burden setting.

Randomized Trial to Compare the Immunogenicity and Safety of a CRM or TT Conjugated Quadrivalent Meningococcal Vaccine in Teenagers who Received a CRM or TT Conjugated Serogroup C Vaccine at Preschool Age.

BACKGROUND: Protection after meningococcal C (MenC) conjugate (MCC) vaccination in early childhood is short-lived. Boosting with a quadrivalent vaccine in teenage years, a high-risk period for MenC disease, should protect against additional serogroups but might compromise MenC response. The carrier protein in the primary MCC vaccine determines the response to MCC booster in toddlers, but the relationship between primary vaccine and booster given later is unclear. This study compared responses to a CRM-conjugated or tetanus toxoid (TT)-conjugated MenACWY vaccine in teenagers primed with differe

Preclinical evidence for implementing a prime-boost vaccine strategy for tuberculosis.

In this review, published peer-reviewed preclinical studies using prime-boost tuberculosis (TB) vaccine regimens in animal challenge models for tuberculosis have been evaluated. These studies have been divided into groups that describe prime-boost vaccine combinations that performed better than, equivalent to, or worse than the currently used BCG vaccine. Review of the data has revealed interesting findings, including that more than half of the published studies using BCG as a prime combined with a novel boost vaccine give better efficacy than BCG alone and that the greatest reduction in Mycob

Pertussis in infants, children, and adolescents: diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

Pertussis, or "whooping cough," caused by the gram-negative pleomorphic bacillus Bordetella pertussis, is a highly contagious, potentially life-threatening respiratory tract illness that has re-emerged worldwide as a cause of substantial morbidity and mortality in infants, children, and adolescents, despite high vaccination rates. Increased awareness and reporting, in addition to the availability of better diagnostic tests, partially explain the recent resurgence of pertussis. However, waning immunity after childhood immunization has resulted in a growing pool of susceptible adolescents and ad

Safety profile of smallpox vaccine: insights from the laboratory worker smallpox vaccination program.

BACKGROUND: The frequency of mild-to-moderate adverse events following smallpox vaccination was not well documented or reported during the pre-eradication era. This report describes the frequency of such symptoms among 936 adult smallpox vaccinees with and without a history of prior smallpox vaccination. METHODS: Diary cards were distributed to 1006 laboratory workers and members of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) smallpox response team who received smallpox vaccination under an investigational new drug protocol during 2001-2002. Vaccinees were requested to complete the d

[Trismus and tetanus vaccine].

BACKGROUND: Tetanus immunization, mandatory in France before the age of 18 months, is usually well tolerated. Fever and local reaction at the site of injection are the most common side effects. We report a case of trismus associated with tetanus immunization. CASE REPORT: A 12-year-old boy was hospitalized for a trimus which occurred 22 h after a booster dose of tetanus polio vaccine. The spasm of masticator muscles was so severe that the patient had difficulties in elocution and feeding. A moderate fever and a hypertonia of the lower limbs were associated. The trismus resolved itself within

[Health Council report 'Protection against hepatitis B': an opportunity for effective prevention through cooperation].

The Health Council of the Netherlands has issued a report updating the guidelines for prevention of hepatitis B formulated in 1983, in which vaccination of high-risk groups was prescribed only to a limited extent. Based on new evidence regarding horizontal transmission, immigration from endemic countries and improved vaccine potency and safety, the new Health Council report now advises-in addition to continuation and intensification of the high risk group approach-universal vaccination, in accordance with the WHO guidelines. The hepatitis B vaccine may be added to the diphtheria-pertussis-teta

Sensitization induced in guinea pigs with beta-propiolactone-treated serum albumin: experimental evidence for the cause of allergic reactions in humans receiving human diploid cell rabies vaccines.

beta-Propiolactone-treated (BPL-T) homologous serum albumin caused anaphylaxis in guinea pigs with a frequency and severity equal to that of guinea pigs inoculated with human albumin. Untreated guinea pig serum albumin did not cause any reactions in these animals. Some recipients of current rabies vaccine produced in human diploid cells available in the USA develop systemic allergic reactions, usually following booster immunization. The BPL-T human albumin component of the vaccines was believed to be the cause of the complications. Our studies support this conclusion.

Hepatitis B Vaccine: Time to Rethink Our Correlate of Protection.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) remains a major global public health concern despite the transformative impact of widespread vaccination. Although the introduction of universal immunization programs has markedly reduced HBV prevalence, particularly in children, the persistence of infection in high-risk adult populations underscores the need for continued vigilance. This review synthesizes current data on the global and United States burden of hepatitis B, the natural immune responses to infection, and the mechanisms by which vaccine-induced protection is sustained. A central focus is the long-term dur

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 Vaccine Boosters: An Influenza Vaccine Perspective.

Changes to severe acute respiratory syndrome 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccine guidance since their initial authorization may lead to confusion and hesitancy. Suggested recommendations for an annual SARS-CoV-2 vaccine naturally draw comparisons with the influenza vaccine program. Considering viral and vaccine characteristics between these pathogens provides an important perspective that can help increase vaccine confidence with SARS-CoV-2 vaccines.

Safety Monitoring of mRNA COVID-19 Vaccine Third Doses Among Children Aged 6 Months-5 Years - United States, June 17, 2022-May 7, 2023.

As of May 7, 2023, CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends that all children aged 6 months-5 years receive at least 1 age-appropriate bivalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccine dose. Depending on their COVID-19 vaccination history and history of immunocompromise, these children might also need additional doses* (1-3). Initial vaccine safety findings after primary series vaccination among children aged 6 months-5 years showed that transient local and systemic reactions were common whereas serious adverse events were rare (4). To characterize the safety of a third mRNA COVID-19
