Vitamin D status is associated with mortality, morbidity, and growth failure among a prospective cohort of HIV-infected and HIV-exposed Tanzanian infants.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D is a potent immunomodulator, but its impact on morbidity and mortality among infants remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to prospectively assess the association of vitamin D status with mortality, morbidity, and growth during the first 2 y of life. METHODS: A prospective cohort of 253 HIV-infected and 948 HIV-exposed Tanzanian infants enrolled in a randomized trial of multivitamins (not including vitamin D) was studied. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations were measured at 5-7 wk of age and infants were followed at monthly clinic vis

Evaluating the effect of hospital and insurance type on the risk of 1-year mortality of very low birth weight infants: controlling for selection bias.

OBJECTIVES: We examined the effect of hospital type and medical coverage on the risk of 1-year mortality of very low birth weight (VLBW) inf … orn to Medicaid-insured versus non-Medicaid-insured women. CONCLUSIONS: Estimated relative risk of infant mortality was significantly lower for births that occurred in hospitals with an NICU; therefore, greater efforts should be made to deliver VLBW neonates in an NICU hospital.

[Survival and risk factors for neonatal mortality in a cohort of very low birth weight infants in the southern region of São Paulo city, Brazil].

Population studies can help identify the complex set of risk factors for neonatal mortality among very low birth weight infants. A cohort (2000-2001) of 213 live newborns with birth weight < 1,500g in the southern region of São Paulo city, Brazil, was studied (112 neonatal deaths and 101 survivors). Data were obtained from home interviews and hospital records. Survival analysis and multiple Cox regression were performed. The high mortality in the delivery room and in the first day of life among neonates < 1,000g and < 28 weeks gestational age and the absence of survival in neonates < 700g sugg

Predicting mortality in infants with persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn with the Score for Neonatal Acute Physiology-Version II (SNAP-II) in Thai neonates.

AIM: To evaluate the ability of the Score for Neonatal Acute Physiology-Version II (SNAP-II) to predict mortality in infants with persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN). METHODS: A prospective cohort study of 41 infants with PPHN admitted to our neonatal intensive care unit between June 2008 and March 2010, who underwent a SNAP-II test within 12 h of admission. RESULTS: Of the 41 infants, 14 died (34.1%) and 27 survived (65.9%). The SNAP-II scores were significantly higher in infants who died (50.1 ± 18.5 vs. 35.7 ± 16.8, P=0.02). Each point increase in the SNAP score increa

[The nosological structure of the mortality of fetuses\infants with extremely low weight (acccording to the 2004-2008 records of the Kursk Regional Morbid Anatomy Bureau)].

The authors present the results of studying the mortality of fetuses/infants with extremely low weight from the 2004-2008 records of the Children Pathology Department, Kursk Regional Morbid Anatomy Bureau. The nosological structure of pathology in late miscarriages points to the potential possibilities of reducing mortality rates, by rendering medical aid to pregnant women. The problems of early detection of fetal malformations and those of postmortem diagnosis of intrauterine infections retain their topicality.

[Multiple pregnancy, place of delivery and mortality in very premature infants: early results from the EPIPAGE cohort in Ile-de-France area].

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its receptors (VEGFRs) serve an essential role in tumor angiogenesis and have emerged as potential therapeutic targets in lung cancer. This review explores the significance of serum VEGF levels as a predictive biomarker in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The VEGF family, consisting of VEGFA, VEGFB, VEGFC, VEGFD, and placenta growth factor (PlGF), engages with specific receptors, including tyrosine kinase receptors (VEGFR-1, VEGFR-2, and VEGFR-3) and neuropilin receptors (NRP-1 and NRP-2), to promote angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis. Spectrum of Lung Histopathology in Minimally Invasive Tissue Sampling (MITS) in a Community-Based Infant Mortality Surveillance in a Low- and Middle-Income Country: A Case Series.

BackgroundLower respiratory tract infections are a major cause of infant mortality, especially in low- and middle-income countries where conventional autopsies are rarely feasible. Minimally invasive tissue sampling (MITS) offers a practical and acceptable alternative for postmortem diagnosis, yet data on lung histopathological findings from community-based surveillance remain limited. This study aimed to describe lung histopathological findings in infants who underwent MITS within a low-resource community setting.MethodsA community-based mortality surveillance was conducted from November 2020…

[Infant mortality among children of 35-39 year-old mothers. An analysis of development of death cause categories and among multiple pregnancies during the period 1980-1993].

The perinatal mortality in Denmark decreased significantly from the late 1980's to 1990-1993 but increased among births by mothers aged 35-39 years, from 9.7 in 1985-1989 to 11.0 per 1000 born in 1990-1993. No increase was observed among infants of teen-age mothers or mothers older than 40 years. Based upon data from the Danish National Register of Causes of Death and the Birth Register all perinatal deaths in 1980-1993 were classified in nine categories including pathoanatomical, obstetrical and paediatric criteria. The increase in perinatal mortality in infants born to mothers aged 35-39 yea

Association between risk-adjusted mortality and severe morbidity in very low birth weight infants: a multicenter study from the NEOCOSUR network.

BACKGROUND: Very low birth weight infants (VLBWI) are at high risk of mortality and severe morbidities. While many neonatal networks monitor risk-adjusted outcomes separately, the relationship between mortality and major morbidities across centers remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between risk-adjusted in-hospital mortality and six major morbidities in VLBWI across 20 South American NICUs participating in the NEOCOSUR Network between 2011 and 2023. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study including 14,100 VLBWI (500-1500 g) from 20 NICUs in Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, Peru,

Treating very preterm European infants with inhaled nitric oxide increased in-hospital mortality but did not affect neurodevelopment at 5 years of age.

AIM: We examined the outcomes of using inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) to treat very preterm born (VPT) infants across Europe. METHODS: This was a sub-study of the Screening to Improve Health in Very Preterm Infants in Europe research. It focused on all infants born between 22 + 0 and 31 + 6 weeks/days of gestation from 2011 to 2012, in 19 regions in 11 European countries. We studied 7268 infants admitted to neonatal care and 5 years later, we followed up the outcomes of 103 who had received iNO treatment. They were compared with 3502 propensity score-matched controls of the same age who did not r

Temporal Trend, Causes, and Timing of Neonatal Mortality of Moderate and Late Preterm Infants in São Paulo State, Brazil: A Population-Based Study.

Moderate and late preterm newborns comprise around 85% of live births < 37 weeks gestation. Data on their neonatal mortality in middle-income countries is limited. This study aims to analyze the temporal trend, causes and timing of neonatal mortality of infants with 320/7-366/7 weeks gestation without congenital anomalies from 2004-2015 in the population of São Paulo State, Brazil. A database was built by deterministic linkage of birth and death certificates. Causes of death were classified by ICD-10 codes. Among 7,317,611 live births in the period, there were 545,606 infants with 320/7-366/7

Early Mortality in Infants Born with Neonatally Operated Congenital Heart Defects and Low or Very-Low Birthweight: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Mortality outcomes of children with isolated neonatally operated congenital heart defects (CHDs) born with a low (LBW), moderately low (MLBW) or very-low birthweight (VLBW) remain ambiguous. We searched Medline and Embase (inception until October 2021) and included studies that evaluated early mortality. The risk of bias was assessed using the Critical Appraisal Skills Program cohort checklist. Meta-analysis involved random-effects models. We explored variability in mortality across birthweight subgroups, CHD types, and study designs. From 2035 reports, we included 23 studies in qualitative sy

Association between the initiation of insurance coverage for fetal echocardiography and mortality from congenital heart disease in infants: An interrupted time series analysis.

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of fetal echocardiography in reducing the mortality from congenital heart disease (CHD) is largely unknown. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate whether the widespread use of fetal echocardiography owing to the initiation of insurance coverage in Japan was associated with a decreasing trend in the annual number of CHD-related deaths. METHODS: Data regarding the number of deaths from CHD in infants aged <12 months were extracted from Japanese demographic statistics (2000-2018). Segmented regression analysis was performed on the interrupted time series data by
