We followed up 5 patients with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) for 14 to 81 months. They were treated with alpha-interferon (INF-alpha) and oral inosinpranobex (INP) in an early stage of Jabbour stage II and within 5 months after the onset. On admission, Ommaya reservoir was implanted for the intrathecal administration of INF-alpha. The dose was 1 x 10(5) U/m2 initially and daily increased to 1 x 10(6) U/m2. The immunomodulatory action of inosiplex, a drug frequently used in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), varies according to its dose and the subjects' immune status. In order to assess its effect in children and adolescents with SSPE, inosiplex (25-50 mg/kg/day) was given to 9 patients aged 7-17 years. Triptosine is a new L-5-hydroxytryptophan derivative whose effect has been studied in the Long-Evans alcohol-preferring rat. At an oral dose of 100 mg/kg once daily, triptosine reduced alcohol consumption by 42% in the second week of treatment and increased that of water by 80%. The results suggest that this precursor of serotonin might play an important role in diminishing preference for alcohol and reaccustoming the animal to water, without exerting an anorexic effect.

The authors analysed the results of controlled treatment by three methods of patients in the 1st or 2nd phase of SSPE in a randomized group. The groups received: I. We studied morphological characteristics of the regenerative process in gingival tissues during therapy of chronic periodontitis. Energostim stimulated macrophageal reaction and promoted neoangiogenesis in the inflammatory infiltrate. It was not observed after traditional drug therapy. Energostim promoted vascularization in regenerating tissues, normalized the structure at a greater area of the lamina propria of the gingiva, and prevented fibrous and sclerotic changes.
