Current status and 10-year trends of reimbursed robot-assisted surgery in Japan: a nationwide claims-based study using the NDB Open Data.

BACKGROUND: Since reimbursement under Japan's National Health Insurance system, robot-assisted surgery (RAS) has expanded rapidly. However, comprehensive cross-disciplinary analyses describing long-term adoption trends and regional variation remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate nationwide adoption and distribution of reimbursed RAS across surgical specialties in Japan. METHODS: We performed a population-based study using publicly available claims data from the National Database (NDB) Open Data (2014-2023). All procedures reimbursed as RAS as of fiscal year 2023, along with correspondi

Abdominal aortic aneurysm and gout risk: A nationwide population-based observational cohort study.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is associated with systemic inflammatory processes that may influence metabolic disorders. This study investigated whether AAA is a risk factor for gout development and evaluated how different treatment approaches influence this risk. We conducted a nationwide retrospective cohort study using the Korean National Health Insurance Service database (2009-2015). We identified 14,256 newly diagnosed patients with AAA and matched them with 42,768 non-AAA controls at a 1:3 ratio based on age and sex. Participants were followed until December 31, 2019, with incident gou

Racial Differences in Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Diagnosis and Management in the United States Veteran Population.

INTRODUCTION: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) epidemiology has been broadly investigated. However, less is known about how race affects BPH diagnosis and management. This study analyzed racial trends in the diagnosis and surgical management of BPH among US veterans. METHODS: The Veterans Affairs (VA) Corporate Data Warehouse database was queried from January 1, 2000, to October 20, 2024, to identify veterans with a diagnosis of BPH. We assessed the rates of BPH procedures and compared trends in diagnosis and surgical management across different demographics including race. RESULTS: We ide

Risk Factors Associated with Adverse Outcomes after Ablative Surgery for Lymphedema.

BACKGROUND: Postmastectomy breast cancer lymphedema poses an important health threat. Historically, physical therapy was the exclusive treatment option. More recently, lymphedema surgery has revolutionized care. As a first-in-kind, multicenter report, the postmastectomy breast cancer patients' risk factors associated with postlymphedema ablative surgical outcomes were documented. METHODS: Using the New York Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System database from 2010 to 2018, multivariable models identified the postmastectomy breast cancer lymphedema surgical patients' characteristic

Septoplasty with or without concurrent turbinate surgery versus non-surgical management for nasal obstruction in adults with a deviated septum: a pragmatic, randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Septoplasty (surgical correction of the deviated nasal septum) is the most frequently performed ear, nose, and throat operation in adults, but no randomised controlled trials or non-randomised comparative studies on the effectiveness of septoplasty have been published. Consequently, health-care providers, health insurance companies, and policy makers are concerned about the effectiveness of the procedure. We aimed to assess the effectiveness of septoplasty for nasal obstruction in adults with a deviated septum. METHODS: We did this open, multicentre, pragmatic, randomised controll

Socioeconomic Status Is Associated with Risk of Above-knee Amputation After Periprosthetic Joint Infection of the Knee.

BACKGROUND: Above-knee amputation (AKA) is a severe but rare complication of TKA. Recent evidence suggests there are sex and racial disparities with regard to AKA after TKA. However, whether lower socioeconomic status is associated with an increased risk of AKA after TKA has not been conclusively established. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) Is low socioeconomic status or use of public health insurance plans associated with an increased risk of AKA after periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) of the knee? (2) Is race or sex associated with an increased risk of AKA after PJI of the knee? METHODS: This c

Cumulative incidence of cardiac surgery associated with exposure to benfluorex: A retrospective analysis based on compensation claims data.

Data on retrospective compensation claims for injuries caused by pharmaceutical drugs are prone to selection and reporting biases. Nevertheless, this case study of the antidiabetic drug benfluorex shows that such data can be used to estimate the cumulative incidence of drug-related injury, and to provide insights into its epidemiology. To this end, we develop a modelling framework for under-reporting of retrospective claims for compensation arising from drug damage. The model involves a longitudinal component related to attrition of cases over time, and a cross-sectional component related to i
