Medication-Overuse Headache.

OBJECTIVE: Medication-overuse headache (MOH) has been described for almost 100 years and is characterized as a daily or near-daily headache that usually presents in patients with preexisting primary headache disorders who are overusing one or more acute or symptomatic headache medications. This article reviews the diagnosis and management of patients with MOH. LATEST DEVELOPMENTS: The International Classification of Headache Disorders criteria for MOH have changed over time. The worldwide prevalence appears to be between 1% and 2%. Together, headache disorders, including MOH, are currently ra

The spectrum of behavioral outcomes after extreme prematurity: regulatory, attention, social, and adaptive dimensions.

Advances in obstetrics and neonatology have increased the survival rates of premature infants with very preterm (<32 weeks) and extremely preterm (<28 weeks) gestations. However, survivors have a high frequency of challenges in academic and social skills. There has been an increased emphasis on examination of outcomes beyond survival rates and rates of neurosensory disabilities at ages 18 to 24 months (eg, cerebral palsy, blindness, deafness, global development delay). One of the key strategies for understanding pathways of risk and resilience is to examine behavioral, social-emotional, and ad

[Significance of the chronic fatigue syndrome in rehabilitation medicine--status and perspectives].

It appears that from a clinical point of view chronic exhaustion or fatigue is an important factor in rehabilitation. This is, however, first of all a phenomenon that can be described as a function in accordance with the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (JCF), caused by chronic illnesses or chronic excessive stress. The clinical and sociomedical ranking of chronic fatigue or exhaustion in respect of rehabilitation was discussed in the framework of a Workshop at the 12th Rehabilitation Science Colloquium, 2003 from the viewpoints of psychiatric rehabilitation, …

Enhancing the efficacy of integrative improvisational music therapy in the treatment of depression: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Depression is among the leading causes of disability worldwide. Not all people with depression respond adequately to standard treatments. An innovative therapy that has shown promising results in controlled trials is music therapy. Based on a previous trial that suggested beneficial effects of integrative improvisational music therapy (IIMT) on short and medium-term depression symptoms as well as anxiety and functioning, this trial aims to determine potential mechanisms of and improvements in its effects by examining specific variations of IIMT. METHODS/DESIGN: A 2 × 2 factorial r

Heterogeneity of Tasks and Outcome Measures in Dual Tasking Studies in Children With Cerebral Palsy: A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVE: The aims of this scoping review are to examine the available literature regarding dual tasking in children with cerebral palsy (CP) and to identify and categorize both the motor and cognitive tasks and outcome measures used primarily through the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health model. METHODS: Five electronic databases were searched. Studies were included if they: (1) were published in English; (2) included at least 1 group of children or adolescents with a diagnosis of CP; (3) assessed dual tasking as part of the study; (4) reported the method fo

Identifying needs in adult rehabilitation to support the clinical implementation of robotics and allied technologies: an Italian national survey.

INTRODUCTION: Robotics and technological interventions are increasingly being explored as solutions to improve rehabilitation outcomes but their implementation in clinical practice remains very limited. Understanding patient needs is crucial for effective integration of these technologies, ensuring they align with and address the actual requirements of individuals in clinical settings. The primary aim of this study is to explore the rehabilitation needs of adults with motor, sensory, and/or cognitive disabilities in order to more effectively guide the practice of technological and robotic inte

Primary headaches prevalence, characteristics, and healthcare utilization in Italian medical students.

BACKGROUND: Among university students, migraine is notably prevalent and is linked to compromised academic performance and daily functioning. Medical students are a particularly vulnerable category due to the demanding nature of their training, as they are often exposed to headache trigger factors. We therefore aimed to determine the prevalence, characteristics, and healthcare-seeking practices of primary headaches among Italian medical students. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study among medical students attending the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Rome who completed a self

Development of a standardized patient-reported clinical questionnaire for children with spinal pain.

BACKGROUND: Spinal pain affects up to 30% of school-age children and can interfere with various aspects of daily life, such as school attendance, physical function, and social life. Current assessment tools often rely on parental reporting which limits our understanding of how each child is affected by their pain. This study aimed to address this gap by developing MySpineData-Kids ("MiRD-Kids"), a tailored patient-reported questionnaire focusing on children with spinal pain in secondary care (Danish hospital setting). METHODS: The process and development of MiRD-Kids followed a structured, mu

Social participation of patients with epidermolysis bullosa: barriers and facilitators in education, employment, and economic life - a biographic interview study.

BACKGROUND: Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) is a rare, inherited skin disorder characterized by skin fragility, leading to painful blisters and wounds. While protective measures are essential for managing EB, they can inadvertently restrict physical activity and social participation. Recognizing this dilemma, the current psychosocial care guidelines for EB emphasize the need to support social participation as a key priority. Accordingly, this study explores barriers and facilitators influencing participation in education, employment, and economic life, as conceptualized by the International Classif

The facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy Rasch-built overall disability scale (FSHD-RODS).

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FHSD) is a debilitating inherited muscle disease for which various therapeutic strategies are being investigated. Thus far, little attention has been given in FSHD to the development of scientifically sound outcome measures fulfilling regulatory authority requirements. The aim of this study was to design a patient-reported Rasch-built interval scale on activity and participation for FSHD. METHODS: A pre-phase FSHD-Rasch-built overall disability scale (pre-FSHD-RODS; consisting of 159 activity/participation items), based on the
