Mental health of primary caregivers for children and adolescents with HIV/AIDS in Cuba.

INTRODUCTION: An HIV diagnosis, like that of any another chronic illness, alters family dynamics. Although the whole family is affected, usually only one member is the primary caregiver of the sick person. OBJECTIVE: To describe general mental health characteristics of primary caregivers of Cuban children and adolescents from across the country diagnosed with HIV/AIDS at the Pedro Kourí Tropical Medicin

[Links between panic disorder, depression, defence mechanisms, coherence and family functioning in patients suffering from severe COPD].

UNLABELLED: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a slowly progressive lung disorder characterised by airflow obstruction. It is one of the major causes of morbidity, disability and mortality in the older population. Comorbid psychiatric and psychological impairments (depression and anxiety, most often panic disorder) are common in COPD. They impair the quality of life in COPD severely and are often not fully explored in the clinical management of COPD patients. AIM: The aim of our study was to assess the prevalence of anxiety (especially panic disorder) and depression among patient

Adaptability and compliance of the obese patient to restrictive gastric surgery in the short term.

BACKGROUND: Low compliance, as well as recurrent vomiting, are often pointed out as the main causes of both postoperative technical complications and poor weight loss. METHODS: 50 patients were examined. All underwent preoperative psychological assessment through an intensive clinical interview. Between October 1999 and January 2000, all the patients underwent vertical banded gastroplasty (VBG). Excess Weight Loss (EWL) was followed, and the number of vomiting episodes was recorded at 1, 3 and 6 months after surgery. RESULTS: 3 different groups of patients could be distinguished: 1) those wi

Caring in Silence: Exploring the Lived Experiences of Employed Informal Caregivers of Older Persons in Iran.

Employed informal caregivers in Iran navigate caregiving responsibilities within a context of absent formal support infrastructure, rigid cultural expectations, and economic constraints. This study explored their lived experiences, focusing on work-care balance, stress management, and interactions with support structures. A qualitative descriptive study was conducted using semi-structured in-depth interviews with five employed female informal caregivers of older persons (aged 65 and above) in urban Iran. Interviews were conducted in Persian via Zoom between January and March 2025, lasting 60 t

Eliciting accounts of alleged child sexual abuse: how do children report touch?

Investigative interviewers frequently question alleged victims of child sexual abuse about any touching or bodily contact that might have occurred. In the present study of forensic interviews with 192 alleged sexual abuse victims, between 4 and 13 years of age, we examined the frequency with which alleged victims reported bodily contact as "touch" and the types of prompts associated with "touch" reports. Even young alleged victims of sexual abuse reported bodily contact as "touch," and they used the word "touch" more frequently in response to recall than recognition prompts. Regardless of age,

Values in persons with schizophrenia.

This is an explorative study on the values of persons with schizophrenia based on transcripts of individual therapy sessions conducted for 40 persons with chart diagnoses of schizophrenia or schizotypal disorder. Values are action-guiding attitudes that subject human activities to be worthy of praise or blame. The schizophrenic value system conveys an overall crisis of common sense. The outcome of this has been designated as antagonomia and idionomia. Antagonomia reflects the choice to take an eccentric stand in the face of commonly shared assumptions and the here and now "other." Idionomia re

Controllability awareness and maladjusted personality traits: preliminary findings.

Previous evidence from studies with college students on three continents and with teachers in an Israeli border community under constant terrorist threat indicates that individuals who are higher in "controllability awareness" (CA, the extent to which an individual's responses to life situations reflect attention to distinctions between controllable and uncontrollable aspects of potential outcomes) perceive their lives as less stressful, report fewer physical symptoms, and think in ways that enable them to cope more effectively with environmental demands. The current study extends these findin

Sibling adaptation to childhood cancer collaborative study: siblings' perceptions of the cancer experience.

Investigated responses of siblings (N = 254) of children with cancer to structured interviews designed to elicit thoughts and feelings about effects of cancer on self and family. Siblings indicated distress about family separations and disruptions, lack of attention, focus of family on the ill child, negative feelings in themselves and family members, cancer treatments and their effects, and fear of death. Siblings also reported becoming more compassionate, families becoming closer, and having experiences they otherwise would not have had. Age and gender differences in responses indicated dist

Psychological factors in men with genital pain.

Among 48 men with genital pain and no organic findings, psychological disorders were diagnosed frequently, including somatization disorder in 56%, nongenital chronic pain syndromes in 50%, major depression in 27%, and chemical dependency in 27%. About one third of the group were socially isolated and 18% had had an important emotional loss at the time of pain onset. Despite their mean age of 41, only half of the men were married. These data suggest that genital pain without organic findings is often related to psychological disorders, life stress, and poor social support. Treatment planning sh

Why women choose trial of labor or repeat cesarean section.

Despite growing interest in vaginal birth after previous delivery by cesarean section, virtually no studies have examined patient decision making in any depth. This paper examines the social content and cognitive structure of pregnant women's decisions to attempt delivery by trial of labor or for elective repeat cesarean section. Three features of childbirth care strategies are discussed. First, social goals are as central to women's decisions as are medical risks. Second, women reinforce their decisions by defining multiple benefits for the preferred alternative and multiple hazards for the r

Trans and Non-Binary Latin American Migrants in London: An Intersectional Analysis of Migration and Psychological Well-Being.

This study explores the experiences of trans and non-binary Latin American migrants in London, addressing a gap in research on queer migration and well-being outside the US context. Using semi-structured interviews and "walking interviews" with seven participants, this research examines the participants' migration motives, gender resocialisation, and interactions within queer and Latin American communities in London. A thematic analysis, guided by intersectionality and minority stress theory as theoretical lenses, produced four key themes: (1) Latin American culture and family dynamics: tradit

A Phenomenologic Study About the Dietary Habits and Digestive Complications for People Living with Temporomandibular Joint Disorder.

AIMS: To better understand the experiences of individuals who must alter the types of food they eat because of having a chronic temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) and the digestive issues that these alterations produce. METHODS: Six participants answered open-ended questions during semi-structured interviews about their experiences with TMD-related changes in diet and digestion. These interviews, held face-to-face with the participants in a nonclinical environment, were recorded and transcribed. Interpretive phenomenology was used to arrange and analyze the narrative data collected. RESU
