We studied 54 patients who, after small intestinal resection, developed a massive protracted diarrhea with a daily fecal loss greater than 2 kg, status we defined as the "overwhelmed intestine syndrome" (OIS). Median length of residual small bowel was 120 cm, 19 patients had a definitive stoma (jejunostomy, n = 9; colostomy, n = 10), 26 patients had a provisional jejunostomy. Whipworms (genus Trichuris) parasitize the lower bowel of humans, domestic animals, and wild animals. The species of Trichuris that are important in small animal practice are T. vulpis in the dog and T. campanula and T. serrata in the cat. Intestinal threadworms (Strongyloides stercoralis in the dog and S. tumefaciens in the cat) parasitize the small intestine. The identification of whipworms and threadworms, their life cycles, and the diagnosis, treatment, and control of infection are discussed in this article.

In a group of 179 patients with small bowel tumours presenting over a 10 year period, lymphomas (20%) were the second most common group. The tumour was usually a white mass and was usually resectable. Eighty-one per cent of patients had regional invasion or metastasis at the time of surgery. Treatment was by surgery and radiotherapy for regional disease. If patients survived 2 years they were usually cured. The overall survival rate was 57%. Carcinoid tumour was the most common small bowel tumour found in this series of 179 patients. It occurred in 24% of patients. Forty-six percent of patients were asymptomatic during life, the tumours being found either at autopsy or during other surgical procedures. Of those that were symptomatic, half presented with intestinal obstruction and the rest with long-standing symptoms. The invaginations of small intestine are being described which represent one of possible causes of intestinal ileus. In connection with multiple invaginations, a case of two intussusceptions is being mentioned, in which the peaks of invaginates are directed towards each other. At the same time four theoretically possible double invaginations are presented as well as a proposal for their distinction and indication.
