OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the risk of vulvar vestibulitis syndrome (VVS) associated with genital infections in a case-control study.
METHODS: Diagnosed cases with VVS (n = 69) and age-frequency-matched healthy controls (n = 65) were enrolled from gynecology clinics in a university medical hospital during 1999. They were compared for potential risk factors and symptoms of disease.

The association between breast cancer incidence and alcohol consumption among postmenopausal women was examined in the Iowa Women's Health Study. In January 1986, a cohort of 41,837 postmenopausal women, aged 55-69 years, completed a questionnaire that included alcohol intake and other information. In 1981, sixteen cases of nosocomial legionellosis occurred among 456 patients admitted to a new hematology-oncology unit (35 per 1000 admissions). Monoclonal antibody typing and restriction endonuclease plasmid analysis identified a unique strain (09,04) of Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 isolated from both patients and water outlets. Continuous hyperchlorination of the hot and cold water began in January 1982, and chlorine levels of 3 to 5 mg/L have been maintained most recently. A longitudinal sample of children was examined for timing and sequence of eruption of permanent teeth. Separate consideration was given to 124 boys and 163 girls from the Child Study Clinic longitudinal growth study. Girls show more variability in age at eruption than boys, and eruption is generally earlier in girls. The degree of variation in sequences of eruption of the first seven permanent teeth is distinct. METHODS: Stored serum samples were obtained from the Iowa State Hygienic Laboratory for evaluation of rubella and measles immunities with IgG enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

Valgus extension osteotomy (VGEO) is a salvage procedure for 'hinge abduction' in Perthes' disease. The indications for its use are pain and fixed deformity. Our study shows the clinical results at maturity of VGEO carried out in 48 children (51 hips) and the factors which influence subsequent remodelling of the hip. After a mean follow-up of ten years, total hip replacement has been carried out in four patients and arthrodesis in one. The average Iowa Hip Score in the remainder was 86 (54 to 100). Twenty-five patients underwent type 1 thyroplasty (external medialization of abducted true vocal cord) during a 2-year period 1986 to 1988) at the University of Iowa.
