A case study on using a large language model to analyze continuous glucose monitoring data.

Continuous glucose monitors (CGM) provide valuable insights about glycemic control that aid in diabetes management. However, interpreting metrics and charts and synthesizing them into linguistic summaries is often non-trivial for patients and providers. The advent of large language models (LLMs) has enabled real-time text generation and summarization of medical data. The objective of this study was to assess the strengths and limitations of using an LLM to analyze raw CGM data and produce summaries of 14 days of data for patients with type 1 diabetes. We first evaluated the ability of GPT-4 to…

Toward Inclusive Large-Scale Alzheimer's Disease Detection via Speech and Language Modeling.

Previous speech-based detection methods for Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) have been constrained by small sample sizes, reliance on single corpora, languages, tasks, and recording conditions, limiting their generalizability. Moreover, many studies have simplified cognitive decline progression through binary classification. To address these limitations, we developed a multimodal framework integrating language-agnostic, multilingual, and language-dependent models with demographic data to enhance adaptability across diverse cohorts. We applied this model to a three-class classif

Assessment of a zero-shot large language model in measuring documented goals-of-care discussions.

CONTEXT: Goals-of-care (GOC) discussions and their documentation are important process measures in palliative care. However, existing natural language processing (NLP) models for identifying such documentation require costly task-specific training data. Large language models (LLMs) hold promise for measuring such constructs with fewer or no task-specific training data. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the performance of a publicly available LLM with no task-specific training data (zero-shot prompting) for identifying documented GOC discussions. METHODS: We compared performance of two NLP models in ide…
