The global application of horizontal force (FH) via hip extension is related to improvements in sprint performance (eg, maximal velocity [vmax] and power [Pmax]). Little is known regarding the contribution of individual leg FH and how a difference between the legs (asymmetry) might subsequently affect sprint performance. The authors assessed a single male athlete for pre-post outcomes of a targeted hip-extension training program on FH asymmetry and sprint-performance metrics. An instrumented nonmotorized treadmill was used to obtain individual leg and global sprint kinetics and determine the a

A previously healthy 27-year-old Nepalese man presented with a history of direct low-impact direct trauma to the left leg. An x-ray was performed in a private hospital and he was referred to our emergency department for the management of a possible foreign body in the left leg. X-ray of the left leg showed a single, small, 'cigar-shaped' calcified lesion in the posterior aspect of the left leg. There was an inconsistency between the injury and x-ray finding. As the patient originated from a region endemic in Taenia solium, a clinical suspicion for cysticercosis was raised. The patient was then

BACKGROUND: Currently, no data is available regarding the association between professional experience or limb dominance and the prevalence of asymptomatic knee joint lesions in adult professional male soccer players.
HYPOTHESIS: The prevalence of the accumulated changes increases with training experience. This is especially true for the dominant leg, which is involved in a large proportion of the athletes' movements.
STUDY DESIGN: Level 2 cross-sectional cohort study METHODS: MRI was used to assess the condition of 94 knee joints in 47 adult professional male soccer players (mean age 25.7 ±

CASE: A 64-year-old man presented 18 months after total hip arthroplasty complicated by vascular injury with a history of leg pain, inability to mobilize, and progressive chronic leg edema. It is presumed that there was persistent subtle bleeding over time with pseudoaneurysm formation and prosthetic hip dislocation secondary to the mass effect.
CONCLUSION: Physicians should consider pseudoaneurysm as a possible diagnosis when confronted with a large intra-articular mass in the hip after a relatively short follow-up period, particularly in the context of a prior vascular injury at the time of

Running is generally considered a symmetrical activity that involves harmonized functions of upper and lower limbs. However, asymmetry can occur under certain conditions, such as fatigue, as lower limbs perform distinct functional tasks. While running, trunk muscles play a crucial role in transmitting loads between the upper and lower limbs, yet the impact of trunk muscle fatigue on the dominant and nondominant legs has not been well addressed. This study investigated the effects of trunk muscle fatigue on ground reaction force characteristics on dominant and nondominant legs in novice runners

Insects exhibit complex physiological responses to injury, including wound healing, immune activation, and tissue regeneration, all of which impose energetic costs. Regeneration, though adaptive for survival, incurs significant physiological costs, particularly to developmental and reproductive fitness. This study investigates the developmental and reproductive trade-offs associated with limb regeneration in the ladybird beetle Cheilomenes sexmaculata (Fabricius). Third-instar larvae were subjected to leg amputation and observed through pupation to adulthood. Regenerated individuals were compa

Functional tests commonly assess athletes' readiness to return to sports after knee surgery. Despite this, there are still more studies on clinical and patient-reported outcomes. The purpose of this study was to determine differences and combinations of various functional performances within and between athletes 6 months after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)-reconstruction (ACLR) for the first time (ACLR-I group) versus second ACL injury on the same knee (ACLR-II group) versus ACLR procedures on both legs (ACLR-III group). A total of 88 patients with ACLR performed single-leg hop (maximum for

Objective King Philip II, the father of Alexander the Great, suffered a penetrating wound to the leg from a spear that left him severely handicapped. His skeletal remains represent the first and only case of an injury from ancient Greece that can be directly compared to its historical record. The objective of the study was to confirm the identity of the male occupant of Royal Tomb I in Vergina, Greece as Philip II of Macedonia by providing new evidence based on anatomical dissection and correlation with the historical description of the wounds. Methods Radiographs and photographs of the leg in

BACKGROUND: Correction of neuromuscular impairments after anterior cruciate ligament injury is vital to successful return to sport. Frontal plane knee control during landing is a common measure of lower-extremity neuromuscular control and asymmetries in neuromuscular control of the knee can predispose injured athletes to additional injury and associated morbidities. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of anterior cruciate ligament injury on knee biomechanics during landing.
METHODS: Two-dimensional frontal plane video of single leg drop, cross over drop, and drop vertical jump dyna

PURPOSE: Little is known regarding movement strategies in the long term following injury of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), and even less about comparisons of reconstructed and deficient knees in relation to healthy controls. The present purpose was to compare trunk, hip, and knee kinematics during a one-leg vertical hop (VH) ~20 years post-ACL injury between persons treated with surgery and physiotherapy (ACLR), solely physiotherapy (ACLPT), and controls (CTRL). Between-leg kinematic differences within groups were also investigated.
METHODS: Sixty-six persons who suffered unilateral AC

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in female adolescent athletes occur at disproportionately high levels compared to their male counterparts. However, limited prospective data exist on the validity of low-cost screening tools that can proactively identify ACL injury risk, specifically for female athletes. The purpose of this study was to assess the concurrent validity of a three-task injury risk factor assessment by comparing visually derived outcome scores from two-dimensional (2D) video data with dichotomized three-dimensional (3D) biomechanical variables collected using motion captur

Previous studies of movement kinematics in patients with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) have focused on changes in angular displacement in a single joint, usually flexion/extension of the knee. In the present study, we investigated the effect of an ACL injury on the overall limb interjoint coordination. We asked healthy and chronic ACL-deficient male subjects to perform eight types of movements: forward squats, backward squats, sideways squats, squats on one leg, going up a step, going down a step, walking three steps, and stepping in place. Depending on the movement concerned, we

Recent clinical studies have investigated postural sway characteristics in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)-deficient knees, but the relative contributions of vision and ACL remain unclear. In the current study, we measured and compared postural sway during one-leg standing with eyes open and closed to assess the difference between legs with and without ACL injury, and we discuss the contribution of the ligament relative to vision and to postural sway in patients. We examined 32 patients (17 males, 15 females) with ACL injury before surgery from March 2001 through January 2004. None presented

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Lower extremity neuropathies from prolonged lithotomy positioning have been well documented. When we initiated our robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP) program in December 2002, we chose to use the split-leg table that allows patient support in a more anatomic position, hypothesizing that this would reduce risk of neurologic compression injuries. We report our incidence of lower extremity neuropathies associated with RALP using split-leg positioning and review patient and surgical variables associated with this complication.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrosp
