A 3.5-year-old male ferret, bought as male castrated, was presented to the veterinarian with marked alopecia of back, neck, abdomen and tail … actin, desmin, and occasionally vimentin and S-100, leading to the diagnosis of an intratesticular leiomyosarcoma. As an adrenal-associated endocrinopathy was excluded and a complete fur recovery was observed after removal of the cryptorchid testicle the alopecia was eventually due to hormones produced by the hyperplastic interstitial (Leydig) cells.

INTRODUCTION: Leiomyosarcomas are neoplasms of smooth muscles that most commonly arise from the uterus, gastrointestinal tract, or soft tissue. Primary pleural leiomyosarcoma is extremely rare. To the best of our knowledge, only nine cases have been published to date. Because of the rarity of pleural leiomyosarcoma and its similarity (clinical and histological) to other pleural neoplasms, particularly sarcomatous mesothelioma, diagnosis is often difficult.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 58-year-old North African man was admitted with complaints of dyspnea and chest pain to our hospital. Chest computed …

Leiomyosarcoma is an uncommon tumor which arises from various sites including uterus, stomach, retroperitoneum, superficial soft tissues, bladder, kidney, and lung. Primary hepatic leiomyosarcoma is a very rare tumor and fewer than 70 cases of primary hepatic leiomyosarcoma have been reported since the first publication in Japan. And there was only one case report of cutaneous metastasis from hepatic leiomyosarcoma. We recently experienced a case of primary hepatic leiomyosarcoma presenting as subcutaneous palpable mass. Herein we report this case with a review of literatures.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the clinical presentation and outcome of patients with high-grade bladder leiomyosarcoma.
METHODS: Between July 1986 and April 1998, 36 adult patients (mean follow-up 56 months) with a diagnosis of urinary bladder leiomyosarcoma were evaluated at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. We retrospectively reviewed the records of these patients for information on clinical features, treatment, and outcome.
RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 63 years. Twenty-six patients were white men in their seventh decade. The most common symptom at presentation …

The authors report a case of leiomyosarcoma of the inferior vena cava, responsible for an acute Budd-Chiari syndrome. The diagnosis, suggested by lower limb edema, ascites, and renal failure, was confirmed by sonography, CT scan, and pathological examination. A mesoatrial shunt and right atrial thrombectomy were performed under extracorporeal circulation. The inferior vena cava was ligated because the tumor was considered to be unresectable.

Leiomyosarcoma involving the calcaneum is an uncommon presentation. A 63-year-old woman was evaluated in August 2023 for a right calcaneal lesion. Core needle biopsy demonstrated a high-grade sarcoma consistent with leiomyosarcoma involving the right calcaneum, with diffuse strong positivity for SMA, desmin, and h-Caldesmon and negativity for S100, CD34, MDM2, and SOX10. The MIB-1 labeling index was approximately 40%, with 6 to 8 mitoses per 10 high-power fields (HPF). The patient subsequently underwent total calcanectomy. Approximately two years and 10 months later, she developed an upper gas…

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a rare, smooth-muscle malignancy and an uncommon sinonasal tumor, often diagnosed at a late stage due to non-specific symptoms and complex anatomy. We report an 82-year-old man with a two-month history of facial pain, epistaxis, and right-sided hearing loss. Imaging and endoscopic evaluation showed a friable mass involving the posterior nasal cavity and nasopharynx. Biopsy confirmed a giant cell-rich spindle cell LMS. He underwent endoscopic resection with positive margins. Postoperative complications and comorbidities delayed the initiation of adjuvant radiation therap…

BACKGROUND: Ecthyma gangrenosum (EG) is a rare necrotizing skin infection most commonly associated with Pseudomonas in immunocompromised patients. Increasingly, EG has been identified in nonbacteremic or immunocompetent patients with various microbial etiologies, expanding its range of clinical presentations.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 40 year-old patient with metastatic leiomyosarcoma presented two-weeks after initiating chemotherapy with multiple necrotic vulvar lesions with an erythematous rim, characteristic of EG. She had no systemic symptoms. She was treated empirically with ciprofloxacin and…

A 71-year-old male was diagnosed with gastric leiomyosarcoma in 2020 after biopsies of an ulcerated gastric lesion. Despite oncological treatment, he presented bone, liver and lung progression. Fourth line treatment with Pazopanib was started in 2022 with no evidence of intestinal or peritoneal metastases. He was attended in the Emergency Department in February 2023 due to symptoms of gastrointestinal bleeding with clinical and analytical repercussion with hemoglobin 5.8g/dl. Initially he presented hematemesis and subsequently hematochezia. An upper and lower endoscopic study was performed, re…

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral vein leiomyosarcomas (LMS) are rare soft tissue sarcomas with high metastatic potential. While radiotherapy (RT) is commonly used in high-grade soft tissue sarcomas to improve local control, its benefit in peripheral vein LMS remains unclear, particularly due to their anatomical location and low local recurrence rates.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 141 patients who underwent surgery for peripheral vein LMS between 2000 and 2023. Inclusion required histopathological confirmation by sarcoma-specialist pathologists. Clinical, pathological, and treatm…

Uterine leiomyosarcoma (uLMS) is a rare, highly malignant neoplasm arising from the smooth muscle of the uterus and is exceedingly rare in pregnancy. We present a unique case highlighting the risk of misdiagnosis of uLMS as the more common condition of benign degenerating leiomyoma in pregnancy. Our case involves a 35-year-old, primiparous woman, where on a third-trimester scan (30 weeks), a high index of suspicion was raised for uLMS in a pre-existing benign leiomyoma. However, subsequent MRI assessments and multidisciplinary team (MDT) discussions inaccurately attributed it to the degenerati…

INTRODUCTION: Prostate leiomyosarcomas are rare malignancies. We report the case of a 53-year-old man with locally confined prostate leiomyosarcoma treated with robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (RARP).
PRESENTATION OF CASE: The patient reported frequent urination, and imaging demonstrated a well-circumscribed tumor compressing the bladder wall. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma, with immunohistochemical positivity for α-smooth muscle actin, desmin, and h-caldesmon. Preoperative staging revealed no distant metastases, and RARP was subseque…

Uterine leiomyosarcoma (uLMS) is the most common type of uterine sarcoma, associated with poor prognosis, high rates of recurrence, and metastasis. Currently, the molecular mechanism of the origin and development of uLMS is limited. Bromodomain and extra-terminal (BET) proteins are involved in both physiological and pathological events. However, the role of BET proteins in the pathogenesis of uLMS is unknown. Here, we show for the first time that BET protein family members, BRD2, BRD3, and BRD4, are aberrantly overexpressed in uLMS tissues compared to the myometrium, with a significant change …

Leiomyosarcoma of the prostate is a rare and aggressive tumor, with a quarter of the patients harboring metastatic disease, commonly in the lung. It usually presents with urinary obstruction in a relatively younger patient group. A 29-year-old male presented with lower urinary tract symptoms to the urologist. Computed tomography scan revealed a large pelvic mass involving the prostate. Biopsy on two occasions yielded leiomyoma. Instead of conventional radical surgery, en-bloc resection of the mass was done while preserving the remaining portion of the prostate, seminal vesicles, and ejaculator…

Leiomyosarcomas (LMS) are common soft tissue tumors in the body. Primary orbital and conjunctival LMS are, however, rare. Herein, we describe the diverse clinical presentations, histopathological features, and management outcomes of three cases of primary LMS of the conjunctiva and one case of primary orbital LMS. The first patient was a 40-year-old female with primary orbital LMS who developed recurrence following wide local excision. The remaining three cases were primary conjunctival LMS. All four patients underwent orbital exenteration and were disease-free at a mean follow-up period of 18…

We present a case of uterine dedifferentiated leiomyosarcoma in a 42-yr-old woman who presented with severe abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding. The mass measured 10.5 cm. The "differentiated" tumor component ranged from leiomyoma-like areas to smooth muscle tumor of uncertain malignant potential to frank leiomyosarcoma. The undifferentiated tumor component showed extreme hypercellularity, intermediate to large polygonal cells, with significant cytologic atypia and numerous mitotic figures (67 mitotic figures per 10 high-power fields). This undifferentiated component imperceptibly blended into…

Most salivary gland neoplasms are of epithelial origin. Sarcomas of the parotid gland, including leiomyosarcoma, are exceedingly rare mesenchymal tumours. A definitive diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma is challenging on cytomorphology alone. We herein describe a case of a 41-year-old woman who presented with parotid gland swelling. The patient was previously diagnosed with leiomyosarcoma of the parotid gland on histopathology. Fine needle aspiration cytology was done from this recurrent swelling. Cytomorphology combined with cell block immunocytochemistry was fruitful in confirming the tumour recurr…

We report an unusual case of extensive deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) in the setting of metastatic uterine leiomyosarcoma. Recognition of the associated sequelae of this condition may improve short- and long-term outcomes. A 56-year-old black female with a history of uterine leiomyosarcoma diagnosed incidentally after total abdominal hysterectomy for fibroid uterus without initiation of chemoradiation treatment presented to the emergency department complaining of generalized weakness and progressively worsening stridor for 2 weeks. The patient was experiencing shortness…
