Lip cancer, relatively common among fair-skinned males, is uncommon among Black-skinned males. In a 10-year review period of 358 Black African patients with orofacial squamous cell carcinoma, 3.9% (n = 14) were found on the lip with a male to female ratio of 2.5:1. Fifty percent (n = 7) of the patients were albinos and two were children with xeroderma pigmentosum. The lower lip was most commonly affected (78.6%). Fear of losing the teeth is common among patients presenting with gingival recession. This report describes a case in which unusual gingival recessions were caused by lip piercing. Periodontal treatment involved removal of the causative agent, hygiene instruction, scaling and root planing, and coverage of the root with a subepithelial connective tissue graft. The therapeutic measures applied in this case yielded satisfactory root coverage, an increase in the width of the keratinized gingiva, improvement in hygiene status and absence of dental hypersensitivity.

The purpose of this study to clarify the factors an effecting lip seal in Japanese adults with malocclusion. Sixty-three malocclusion patients aged 20 to 27 years were randomly selected and compared with fourteen normal occlusion controls aged 22 to 26 years old. Results of reconstruction of residual alveolar bone defects in 52 patients operated between 1990-1998 were evaluated clinically and radiographically in a retrospective study. Ages ranged between 9-37; 30 were males. The donor site of bone grafts in all was particulate cancellous marrow from the anterior iliac crest. 32 had unilateral clefts and 20 bilateral. A case of localised African histoplasmosis with an unusual presentation in a 56 year old Nigerian farmer is reported. The lesion presented as an ulcer clinically mimicking squamous cell carcinoma of the lower lip. An incisional biopsy and culture studies confirmed African histoplasmosis and the ulcer healed spontaneously without treatment. This case is reported to highlight the unusual location and clinical course of African histoplasmosis.

For correction of the bilateral cleft lip nasal deformity, a modified bilateral reverse U incision is used in combination with a short, forked flap; by using this combination, satisfactory lengthening of the columella, preserving the natural pout of the lip, can be obtained. We have applied this method to 12 cases undergoing secondary repair of bilateral cleft lip in the past 3 years, and the results of this treatment, along with representative photographs of some of our patients, are presented herein.

Unilateral permanent paralysis of the lower lip after section or compression of the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve is not rare. It may occur after trauma or as a result of parotid, ear, or upper neck surgery. Surgical treatment of the deformity--which we term the marginal mandibular lip--is indicated to improve cosmesis and restore oral competence during eating and speech. We describe our experience with partial resection of the paralyzed lower lip as an effective yet simple method of surgical correction. We also review the alternate methods of treatment for comparison.
