Plasticity of left perisylvian white-matter tracts is associated with individual differences in math learning.

Plasticity of white matter tracts is thought to be essential for cognitive development and academic skill acquisition in children. However, a dearth of high-quality diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data measuring longitudinal changes with learning, as well as methodological difficulties in multi-time point tract identification have limited our ability to investigate plasticity of specific white matter tracts. Here, we examine learning-related changes of white matter tracts innervating inferior parietal, prefrontal and temporal regions following an intense 2-month math tutoring program. DTI data

Simple formulas to determine optimal subclavian central venous catheter tip placement in infants and children.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Optimal central venous catheter (CVC) tip location is necessary to decrease the incidence of complications related to their use. We sought to create a practical method to reliably predict the length of catheter to insert into the subclavian vein during CVC placement in children. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of 727 chest radiographs of children who underwent either left or right subclavian CVC placement. We measured the distance from the subclavian entry site to the to the right atrium/superior vena cava (RA/SVC) junction, following the catheter's course. We

Is the formula of Traub still up to date in antemortem blood glucose level estimation?

According to the hypothesis of Traub, also known as the 'formula of Traub', postmortem values of glucose and lactate found in the cerebrospinal fluid or vitreous humor are considered indicators of antemortem blood glucose levels. However, because the lactate concentration increases in the vitreous and cerebrospinal fluid after death, some authors postulated that using the sum value to estimate antemortem blood glucose levels could lead to an overestimation of the cases of glucose metabolic disorders with fatal outcomes, such as diabetic ketoacidosis. The aim of our study, performed on 470 cons

Toward a biologically based dose-response model for developmental toxicity of 5-fluorouracil in the rat: acquisition of experimental data.

Biologically based dose-response (BBDR) models represent an emerging approach to improving the current practice of human health-risk assessment. The concept of BBDR modeling is to incorporate mechanistic information about a chemical that is relevant to the expression of its toxicity into descriptive mathematical terms, thereby providing a quantitative model that will enhance the ability for low-dose and cross-species extrapolation. Construction of a BBDR model for developmental toxicity is particularly complicated by the multitude of possible mechanisms. Thus, a few model assumptions were made

Complexity IX. Closure over the organization of a scientific truth.

The specificity of human knowledge allow one to construct specific truths about human behavior. A structural notation and language for describing a complex hierarchically organized biological system was developed for the explicit purpose of analyzing the origins of health and disease. A specific application of these concepts to a specific patient (such as an individual suffering from the heritable disease, sickle cell anemia) requires a systematic formulation of a scientific truth. No universal law is applicable. The value of a clinical truth for the patient, as well as for the physician and s

Hyperadaptability Through Self-Organizing Behavioral Search.

Artificially replicating the extraordinary adaptive potential of organisms remains difficult. Machine learning approaches based on big data pursue behavioral adaptation through generalization from training data, but often learn slowly and struggle with out-of-distribution situations. We propose that organisms may not adapt primarily through generalization alone but by rapidly eliminating infeasible solutions through online trial-and-error, effectively performing a search over the behavior space. If this search is complete, it is guaranteed to find an existing physically robust solution within

A virtual epidemics approach to HIV dynamics in the United States (1981-2030).

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic in the United States has changed substantially since it was first identified in 1981; yet, progress toward ending the HIV epidemic targets remains uncertain. In this study, we examined the progress of the United States using HIV epidemic data from 1981 to 2025 and project trends through 2030 using mathematical transmission models. Two models were considered: A transmission model without pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and an extended model incorporating PrEP-related behavioral dynamics. Structural and practical identifiability analyses were used

The role of host mobility in the transmission and spread of Echinococcus granulosus: A Chile-based mathematical modeling approach.

This paper explores, as a proof-of-concept, the impact of definitive and intermediate host mobility on the transmission and spread of cystic echinococcosis by characterizing disease dynamics using three classical epidemic models: S-E-I-R for the accidental intermediate host, S-E-I for the habitual intermediate host, and S-I-S for the definitive host. The simulations revealed a significant relationship between the mobility of dogs and the increase in infected sheep. Specifically, for each infected dog, there were twice as many infected sheep as in a situation where mobility was not a factor. Th

Growth-mediated negative feedback shapes quantitative antibiotic response.

Dose-response relationships are a general concept for quantitatively describing biological systems across multiple scales, from the molecular to the whole-cell level. A clinically relevant example is the bacterial growth response to antibiotics, which is routinely characterized by dose-response curves. The shape of the dose-response curve varies drastically between antibiotics and plays a key role in treatment, drug interactions, and resistance evolution. However, the mechanisms shaping the dose-response curve remain largely unclear. Here, we show in Escherichia coli that the distinctively sha

An Intra-Cycle Optimal Control Framework for Ventricular Assist Devices Based on Atrioventricular Plane Displacement Modeling.

A promising treatment for congestive heart failure is the implementation of a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) that works as a mechanical pump. Modern LVADs work with adjustable constant rotor speed and provide therefore continuous blood flow; however, recently undertaken efforts try to mimic pulsatile blood flow by oscillating the pump speed. This work proposes an algorithmic framework to construct and evaluate optimal pump speed policies with respect to generic objectives. We use a model that captures the atrioventricular plane displacement, which is a physiological indicator for heart

Hypoxic-Mediated Oxidative Stress Condition and Hydroxyapatite-Inducing Osteogenic Differentiation of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells: A Mathematical Modeling Study.

Avascular necrosis (AVN) of the bones remains a major clinical challenge. Fractures in the talus, the scaphoid, and the neck of the femur are especially challenging to heal due to the low blood vessel network and the lack of collateral blood supply. These fractures are associated with high rates of nonunion and increased infections that require repeated operations. Conventional treatments by autografting or allografting bone replacement and synthetic bone implants have limitations, including the invasiveness of operative procedures, tissue supply insufficiency, and the risk of host rejection.

Mechano-biology in the thoracic aortic aneurysm: a review and case study.

An aortic aneurysm is a permanent and localized dilatation of the aorta resulting from an irreversible loss of structural integrity of the aortic wall. The infrarenal segment of the abdominal aorta is the most common site of aneurysms; however, they are also common in the ascending and descending thoracic aorta. Many cases remain undetected because thoracic aortic aneurysms (TAAs) are usually asymptomatic until complications such as aortic dissection or rupture occurs. Clinical estimates of rupture potential and dissection risk, and thus interventional planning for TAAs, are currently based pr

Introduction of a new standardized assessment score of spine morphology in osteogenesis imperfecta.

PURPOSE: Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a rare hereditary disease leading to multiple bone deformities and fractures. In the absence of causal therapy, a symptomatic approach is based on treatment with bisphosphonates and physiotherapy. The clinical and radiological manifestations vary. Therefore, standardization and quantification for an objective comparison, especially during therapy, are required. In this paper, radiological changes of the spine are quantified according to their clinical relevance to define a scoring system that transfers the morphological changes into a single value repre

CODER: Data-efficient activation of mathematical reasoning via difficulty-aware core-set.

Large language models (LLMs) demonstrate remarkable performance in mathematical reasoning tasks, yet their fine-tuning process typically relies on substantial volumes of high-quality annotated data. Under conditions of limited computational resources and sparse data, they are highly susceptible to overfitting and catastrophic forgetting. Inspired by the classic textbooks used in human education from primary to secondary school, which embody a natural difficulty progression, this work suggests that constructing hierarchical data covering key knowledge nodes can effectively facilitate the activa

Large Language Model-Based Interactive Code Generation for Developing a 3D Eye Movement Schematic.

Introduction Understanding the three-dimensional (3D) geometric relationship between extraocular muscles and the globe is essential for strabismus management. Conventional educational tools are static, and existing 3D biomechanical software requires highly specialized skills, making routine clinical use difficult. Furthermore, image-generating artificial intelligence (AI) frequently produces anatomically incorrect outputs (hallucinations). This study aimed to develop a structurally coherent, interactive 3D eye movement schematic as a proof-of-concept, using the coding capabilities of a large l

Cultural life: Theory and empirical testing.

"What is life?" and Erwin Schrödinger's answer, "negative entropy", inspired researchers in the 20th century to unite physics, chemistry, and physiology into a new synthesis that many believe to be an important foundation for life science today. Decades after Schrödinger, life scientists are still fascinated by the riddle that entropy can only accumulate in physical systems, which often leads to biological deterioration and death, but life finds ways to persist and prevail. So to say, life "negates" entropy. Can this fascination and research concept be broadened even further to human culture?

Suture Forces for Closure of Transapical Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement: A Mathematical Model.

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has revolutionized the treatment of severe aortic stenosis in intermediate, high-risk, and inoperable patients. TAVR has multiple access routes, including transfemoral (TF), transapical (TA), direct aortic (DA), axillary, transcarotid, and transcaval. The most commonly applied algorithm is a TF-first approach, where only when patients are unsuitable for TF are alternatives such as TA considered. An infrequent - but dreaded - risk is left ventricular (LV) apical bleeding from tearing or rupture with the TA approach. With burgeoning trans

Image-guided anatomical and morphometric study of supraorbital and transorbital minicraniotomies to the sellar and perisellar regions: comparison with standard techniques.

OBJECT: Minimally invasive approaches have been proposed for the treatment of anterior cranial base pathology. Whereas earlier studies have quantified surgical exposure by referring to the opening on the surface, this cadaveric morphometric study redefines the concept of working area by examining the deep exposures afforded by several different approaches. Specifically, the authors systematically quantify and compare the operative exposure afforded by the pterional, supraorbital, and transorbital keyhole approaches to the sellar, suprasellar, and perisellar regions, including the anterior comm

Education Research: Explaining Neurophobia in Medical Students: A Comparison With Math Anxiety.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Neurophobia, or the fear of the study and practice of neurology or neuroscience, plagues learners and practitioners of all types. Neurophobia is a global phenomenon and adversely affects medical education, the field of neurology, and ultimately patient care. Despite this, there is still much to be understood. It is reasonable to compare this relatively undefined phenomenon in medical education to lack of confidence or anxiety in other areas of education that are more well-understood. One of the best studied is the fear of mathematics, often referred to as math anxiet
