Communication signal diversification is a driving force in the evolution of sensory and motor systems. However, little is known about the evolution of sensorimotor integration. Mormyrid fishes generate stereotyped electric pulses (electric organ discharge [EOD]) for communication and active sensing. The EOD has diversified extensively, especially in duration, which varies across species from 0.1 to >10 ms. In the electrosensory hindbrain, a corollary discharge that signals the timing of EOD production provides brief, precisely timed inhibition that effectively blocks responses to self-generate

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease. α-Synuclein (α-syn) oligomers play a critical role in the progression of PD. Baicalein, a typical flavonoid compound, can inhibit the formation of the α-syn oligomers, and disaggregate existing α-syn oligomers in vitro. However, whether baicalein could inhibit or disaggregate α-syn oligomers in vivo has not been investigated. Therefore, this study was designed to investigate the inhibitory effects of baicalein on α-syn oligomers in vivo and to explore the possible mechanisms of such inhibition. A chronic PD mouse model was cr

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Pure midbrain stroke can cause isolated unilateral oculomotor paresis. We attempted to determine whether there is a difference in the oculomotor paresis pattern between pure midbrain infarction and midbrain hemorrhage.
METHODS: Pure midbrain stroke patients who presented with isolated unilateral oculomotor paresis were identified from a group of 2447 consecutive patients hospitalized for acute cerebral infarction or hemorrhage during the period May 2008 through April 2014. Detailed oculomotor findings were evaluated in the identified patients per the cause of the strok

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Perimesencephalic subarachnoid hemorrhage (PSAH) is not consistently defined in the existing literature. The purpose of this study was to test the inter-observer variability and specificity for non-aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) of an anatomic definition of PSAH.
METHODS: Medical records of all patients who underwent catheter angiography for evaluation of non-traumatic SAH between July 2002 and April 2012 were reviewed. Patients with anterior circulation aneurysms were excluded. Three blinded reviewers assessed whether each admission CT scan met the following

INTRODUCTION: Perimesencephalic subarachnoid hemorrhage is a rare neurologic condition of unclear etiology. Multiple mechanisms have been postulated as potential triggers, but none are universally accepted.
METHODS: Single observational case report and review of the literature.
RESULTS: We describe a patient who developed perimesencephalic subarachnoid hemorrhage in the setting of "hypoxic training" (breath-holding while swimming). We describe the plausible pathophysiologic events that caused the hemorrhage.
CONCLUSION: The occurrence of perimesencephalic subarachnoid hemorrhage during hypo

A 1-day-old male giraffe calf (Giraffa camelopardalis) was submitted for necropsy examination after sustaining postnatal head trauma from the cow. In addition to the expected findings of severe cerebral edema and epidural and subarachnoid hemorrhage, there also was present an incidental finding of a subependymal glioneuronal aqueductal hamartoma. Reports of this type of congenital lesion are rare in the human literature, and the lesion has not, to the authors' knowledge, previously been reported in this or any other veterinary species.

Theories of schizophrenia propose that abnormal functioning of the neural reward system is linked to negative and psychotic symptoms, by disruption of reward processing and promotion of context-independent false associations. Recently, it has been argued that an insula-anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) salience network system enables switching of brain states from the default mode to a task-related activity mode. Abnormal interaction between the insula-ACC system and reward processing regions may help explain abnormal reinforcer processing and symptoms. Here we use functional magnetic resonance

Wernekink commissure syndrome is a rare midbrain syndrome, which selectively destroys the Wernekink commissure involving the decussation of superior cerebellar peduncle in midbrain. This syndrome may display a clinical picture: bilateral cerebellar ataxia, eye movement disorders, and palatal tremor. We present two cases of the Wernekink commissure syndrome with acute onset of bilateral cerebellar dysfunction confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging. One patient presented internuclear ophthalmoplegia, but neither showed palatal tremor. It is notable that the bilateral cerebellar dysfunction may

We report the case of a 15-year-old boy with giant congenital melanocytic nevi on his back, buttocks, and rear of the two proximal thirds of his thighs, and neurocutaneous melanosis, diagnosed when he was 3 years old. Three melanocytic nodules were present in the giant nevi that were suspected to have malignant degeneration. A biopsy of these nodules was carried out, and histological study revealed benign proliferative melanocytic nodules within the giant congenital melanocytic nevi.

We report a patient in whom placement of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt for obstructive hydrocephalus secondary to non-neoplastic aqueductal stenosis was complicated by progressive parkinsonism and midbrain dysfunction. These sequelae were refractory to treatment, including shunt revision and levodopa therapy. These findings contradict the opinion from the literature that this type of parkinsonism is a reversible condition and levodopa therapy is effective for managing the symptoms. We discuss the pathophysiological mechanism of this complication.

We describe a patient presenting with trochlear nerve palsy and segmental sensory disturbance due to circumscribed mesencephalic hemorrhage. A 36-year-old man with no past illness visited our hospital complaining of sudden onset of diplopia, dysesthesia of the left face and upper extremity, and acuphenes of the left ear. Neurological examination revealed left trochlear nerve palsy and segmental sensory disturbance of the left side almost above T11 level. Pain and temperature sensation were disturbed, but vibration, joint position, graphesthesia, kinesthesia, and discrimination sensation were s

BACKGROUND: Neural and stem cell transplantation is emerging as a potential treatment for neurodegenerative diseases from Parkinson's to Huntington's disease. Stereotactic placement of dopaminergic neurons in the caudate-putamen (striatum), is being attempted in centers of excellence and has proved to be beneficial. Basic research using cell transplantation indicates that structural development mechanisms seen in immature brains, i.e., fetal brains, can also function in the adult brain. The adult brain consumes 15% of the resting cardiac output for its metabolic needs. While most human tissues

The term somatostatin refers to a family of peptides, mainly somatostatin-14, somatostatin-28 and somatostatin-28 (1-12), which are the cleavage products of a single 116 amino acid-long preprosomatostain molecule. The production of antibodies to these peptides allows their localization in a number of neuronal populations throughout the entire neuroaxis in many mammals. The dog has been pointed out as an extremely useful animal model for studying age-related cognitive dysfunction and other neuronal changes associated with aging in which somatostatin appears to be involved. However, only very sc

A 54-year-old man developed somnolent akinetic mutism and acute mixed transcortical aphasia following a left thalamo-mesencephalic infarction. He also exhibited behavioural changes, namely apathy, slowness, lack of spontaneity, disinhibition, perseveration, gait apraxia and incontinence consistent with frontal lobe dysfunction. Presumably the akinetic mutism and language dysfunction were due to the thalamic stroke. All the manifestations could be related to interruption of the frontal-subcortical circuitry.

Congenital hypopituitarism may be due to hypothalamic failure. The case presented below belonged to this category. In addition, the demonstration of absent septum pellucidum placed this case in the category of suprasellar dysplasia. The patient was 21 years old, with primary amenorrhea and lack of development of secondary sex characteristics. The laboratory findings confirmed the diagnosis of hypothyroidism, hypocortisolism, hypogonadotropism, hyperprolactinemia and normal growth hormone. Stimulation studies revealed a subnormal response of cortisol to adrenocorticotrophic hormone stimulation,
