Do dietary perceptions among patients with chronic musculoskeletal conditions correlate with lifestyle metrics and outcomes of the lifestyle medicine program?

BACKGROUND: Eating a whole-food, plant-predominant diet reduces chronic systemic inflammation, which can improve pain in people with chronic musculoskeletal conditions. However, 85% of people have dietary perceptions that do not accurately reflect their actual dietary quality. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether patients' dietary perceptions align with dietary quality, assess correlations between dietary perception and lifestyle metrics, and evaluate how dietary perceptions relate to outcomes following Lifestyle Medicine (LSM) program completion. DESIGN: Retrospective review of repository data.

Stand-alone graph-based lung airway labeling with quantitative validations.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that protecting airways connected to high-functioning lung parenchyma reduces the risk of post-treatment radiation-induced lung injury. To account for airway sparing in radiotherapy planning, a critical requirement is to characterize the geometry and radiation response of individual airway segments. PURPOSE: To report on automated individual airway labeling framework with branch dimensions extracted from CT-derived virtual bronchoscopy images. METHODS: We developed an automated graph-based topological labeling algorithm with bifurcation detections and

Dynamic functional network connectivity in patients with a mismatch between white matter hyperintensity and cognitive function.

OBJECTIVE: White matter hyperintensity (WMH) in patients with cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) is strongly associated with cognitive impairment. However, the severity of WMH does not coincide fully with cognitive impairment. This study aims to explore the differences in the dynamic functional network connectivity (dFNC) of WMH with cognitively matched and mismatched patients, to better understand the underlying mechanisms from a quantitative perspective. METHODS: The resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) and cognitive function scale assessment of the patients were

Replication and Expansion of Pupillary Light Reflex as Diagnostic Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Tool in Military Cadets.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Pupillometers can quantitate an individual's pupillary light reflex (PLR), which involves a complex interaction between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Growing evidence suggests that mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) impairs the regulatory processes that balance sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system responses; therefore, the PLR may serve as a diagnostic mTBI biomarker. Preliminary evidence in this area would be enhanced by replication. METHODS: One hundred and ninety-six US Military Academy cadets completed standard concussion assessm

Quantification of cognitive load and usability in 3 percutaneous posterior spine surgical workflows using functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS), Surgical Task Load Index (SURG-TLX) and modified System Usability Survey.

Increase complexity in surgical workflows, with the introduction of digital interfaces and navigation, has the potential risk of introducing cognitive burden to the user. Understanding the effect of different surgical workflows on the user's mental load, as a way of supporting decision-making and design iterations for medical device development, is limited. The present study aimed to quantify differences in cognitive load during a demanding task in spine surgery (percutaneous pedicle screw placement) performed with three workflows with increasing complexity, from limited visual aid to the pres

In vitro assessment of photostability and apparent UV protection enhancement in a multi-component organic UV filter system with synthetic and natural boosters.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a major environmental factor contributing to skin damage, including erythema, oxidative stress, photoaging, and DNA damage. Organic UV filters are widely used in sunscreen formulations; however, their photoinstability remains a key limitation. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of combining synthetic and natural UV boosters on the photostability, apparent UV protection performance, and antioxidant activity of a multi-component organic UV filter system under in vitro conditions. Four formulations were prepared, including a booster-free control, synthetic-only,

Failure to Rescue in Thoracic Surgery.

Historically, quality improvement efforts have focused primarily on preventing complications from occurring. In contrast, failure to rescue is an emerging quality metric that follows patients after a complication occurs and describes a system's ability to prevent subsequent mortality and rescue them from death. Future efforts to implement the rescue framework in thoracic surgery should consider selective care consolidation, standardized pathways for detection of clinical deterioration and subsequent escalation of care, distribution of best practices, and evaluation of patient factors that cont

Recent advances in systems engineering approaches to integrated strain and bioprocess development.

Systems engineering has transformed chemical manufacturing, but bioprocessing has lagged in adopting comprehensive approaches. This review explores strategies that successfully engineer integrated upstream and downstream bioprocesses. Our analysis reveals a critical gap: bioprocess subsystems are typically optimized in isolation ('subsystems optimization'), which limits the overall performance. We identify four key leverage points for systems engineering: engineering product accessibility to eliminate cell lysis, modifying strains to remove contaminants, adapting products for simplified purifi

Analysis of "Accuracy of a Seventh-Generation Continuous Glucose Monitoring System in Children and Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes".

In an article in the Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology, Laffell et al examined the accuracy and performance of a seventh-generation "G7" continuous glucose monitor (CGM) system in participants with type 1 diabetes aged 2 to 17 years. The study had notable points which increase the generalizability of the authors' findings to usual clinical practice, such as accuracy assessment across a wide range of glycemia in the arm and abdominal area, at variable rates of change and time periods (beginning and end of sensor wear). However, accuracy measurements in the younger cohort (2-6 years old

Network analysis of possible anaphylaxis cases reported to the US vaccine adverse event reporting system after H1N1 influenza vaccine.

The identification of signals from spontaneous reporting systems plays an important role in monitoring the safety of medical products. Network analysis (NA) allows the representation of complex interactions among the key elements of such systems. We developed a network for a subset of the US Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) by representing the vaccines/adverse events (AEs) and their interconnections as the nodes and the edges, respectively; this subset we focused upon included possible anaphylaxis reports that were submitted for the H1N1 influenza vaccine. Subsequently, we calcul

Stability and breakdown of chiral motion in nonreciprocal flocking.

We study a two-species Vicsek model with intraspecies alignment and asymmetric interspecies couplings, where one species aligns with the other while the latter antialigns. Motivated by recent results showing that globally coherent chiral motion is not a generic large-scale state of finite-range nonreciprocal flocking, we ask whether a chiral state can nevertheless be stabilized in the discrete-time, metric, nonreciprocal two-species Vicsek model, and if so, under what conditions. For equal populations and motilities, we find that the global chiral state is a long-lived finite-time state rather

Automating case extraction and screening for hospital-associated Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia surveillance in two Canadian hospitals.

OBJECTIVE: Outline our process in creating an efficient surveillance system through increased automation of detecting hospital-associated Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia (HA-SAB). To describe the rate and attributable source of HA-SAB over time at our institutions. METHODS: We developed an algorithm for extracting cases that met the temporal case definition of hospital-onset Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia (HO-SAB) through our electronic medical record system. The expanded temporal definition included both instances of S. aureus bacteremia (SAB) if occurring>48 hours after admission (HO-SAB

IVCM-Insight: automated interactive interpretation of in vivo confocal microscopy.

In vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) is a critical ophthalmic examination that provides in vivo cytological and neurological information essential for diagnosing corneal and certain systemic diseases, but its clinical utility is limited by time-consuming interpretation and the need for subspecialty expertise. We developed IVCM-Insight, an artificial intelligence (AI) system integrating image-text contrastive learning with large language models (LLMs) for automated report generation and interactive question answering (QA). Based on 30,368 IVCM images and 4155 paired clinical reports, the model wa
