Tumor-infiltrating macrophage and microvessel density in oral squamous cell carcinoma.

Tumor-associated macrophages (TAM) are the main cellular component in stroma of many tumors and participate in tumor angiogenesis. The aim of present study was to compare the microvascular density (MVD) and infiltrating macrophage density (IMD) in oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCCs) with different histological grades. A histomorphometric analysis was performed after immunohistochemistry using antibodies such as von-Willebrand factor and CD68. A significant difference in MVD was found between well and moderately differentiated OSCCs (p<0.05). TAM were largely present in all studied tumors and…

Prognostic significance of erythropoietin and erythropoietin receptor in tongue squamous cell carcinoma.

Despite its primary hematopoietic function, erythropoietin (Epo) is a pleiotropic cytokine that exerts various biological functions in many … density of microvessels, and the stage of the tumour (P<0.05). EpoR expression was associated with microvascular density alone (P<0.05). After adjusting for other clinicopathological factors, Epo and EpoR expression remained independent adverse prognosticators for postoperative survival (P<0.05). Our findings support the hypothesis that the Epo and EpoR systems influe …

Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy in a Mouse Model of Alzheimer's Disease Associates with Upregulated Angiopoietin and Downregulated Hypoxia-Inducible Factor.

BACKGROUND: Vascular pathology is a common feature in patients with advanced Alzheimer's disease, with cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) and microvascular changes commonly observed at autopsies and in genetic mouse models. However, despite a plethora of studies addressing the possible impact of CAA on brain vasculature, results have remained contradictory, showing reduced, unchanged, or even increased capillary densities in human and rodent brains overexpressing amyloid-β in Alzheimer's disease and Down's syndrome. OBJECTIVE: We asked if CAA is associated with changes in angiogenetic factors

Cardiac epigenetic changes in VEGF signaling genes associate with myocardial microvascular rarefaction in experimental chronic kidney disease.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is common in patients with heart failure and often results in left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD). Ho … n were blunted in CKD-LVDD compared with controls and were associated with decreased subendocardial microvascular density. Cardiac epigenetic changes in VEGF-related genes are associated with impaired angiogenesis and cardiac microvascular rarefaction in swine CKD-LVDD. These observations may assist in developing novel therapies to ameliorate cardiac damage in CKD-LVDD …

Effects of donor-specific microvascular anatomy on hemodynamic perfusion in human choriocapillaris.

Evidence from histopathology and clinical imaging suggest that choroidal anatomy and hemodynamic perfusion are among the earliest changes in retinal diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD). However, how inner choroidal anatomy affects hemodynamic perfusion is not well understood. Therefore, we sought to understand the influences of choroidal microvascular architecture on the spatial distribution of hemodynamic parameters in choriocapillaris from human donor eyes using image-based computational hemodynamic (ICH) simulations. We subjected image-based inner choroid reconstructions

Assessment of Serum Lipocalin-2 in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients With and Without Retinopathy.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a serious microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus. Recent studies have shown elevated lipocalin-2 in complications associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). These elevated lipocalin-2 levels have been linked with dysregulated lipid metabolism and inflammation, and they may potentially contribute to the disease severity of DR. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to assess and compare serum levels of lipocalin-2 in T2DM patients with and without retinopathy and to uncover its role in the progression of DR. METHODS: This study involved 82 T2DM pati

Capillary rarefaction in advanced chronic kidney disease is associated with high phosphorus and bicarbonate levels.

BACKGROUND: In patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), disorders of mineral metabolism are associated with vascular calcifications and mortality. Microvascular dysfunction, by affecting flow resistance and tissue perfusion, may explain the cardiovascular sequelae of CKD-associated disorders of mineral metabolism. We investigated whether advanced CKD is associated with a decrease in the functional and structural number of capillaries in skin and subsequently whether capillary rarefaction is related to mineral metabolism. METHODS: Capillary density was measured by nailfold microscopy in 19

Comparative Characteristics of Morphometric Changes in the Brain Tissue Caused by Prenatal Alcohol Exposure and Hypoxia.

According to current knowledge, hypoxia is a key mechanism mediating the detrimental effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on the nervous tissue. However, comparative analysis of these interrelated conditions has only been partially addressed. We conducted a morphometric analysis of fetal brain tissue affected by chronic alcohol exposure and hypoxia. A decrease in the specific area of neuroblasts, glioblasts, and microvascular elements was found. Hypoxia promoted enlargement of neuroblasts and their differentiation into immature neurons, whereas alcohol exposure led only to a decrease in their
