Applied evolutionary psychology in moral education: a quasi-experimental study exploring the longitudinal associations of compassion training with emotion regulation and prosocial ethical development.

INTRODUCTION: Moral education increasingly requires psychologically realistic approaches that explain how students transform moral knowledge into stable prosocial action. Drawing on applied evolutionary psychology, this longitudinal study examined whether compassion-training engagement in moral education was associated with students' emotion regulation, moral identity integration, and prosocial ethical development across one academic semester. METHODS: A total of 458 undergraduates enrolled in moral education modules in Sino-foreign cooperative university contexts completed baseline, mid-seme

Exploring the Views and Experiences of Moral Distress Among Newly Graduated Registered Nurses in Saudi Arabia: A Sequential Explanatory Mixed-Methods Study Protocol.

Background: Moral distress is a significant concern in nursing, particularly among newly graduated registered nurses transitioning into professional practice. Limited experience, high workloads, and exposure to ethically challenging situations may negatively affect well-being and contribute to early-career attrition. Evidence on how NGRNs experience and manage moral distress globally and in Saudi Arabia remains limited, and the role of healthcare organisational factors in shaping this phenomenon is not yet well understood. Aim: This study aims to examine the experiences of NGRNs regarding mora

Guilt-related cognition and self-compassion could mediate the relation between coercive control and moral injury in women survivors of intimate partner violence.

OBJECTIVE: Victim-survivors of coercive control (CC), abuse characterized by one partner controlling another's tangible and psychosocial resources, may experience moral injury (MI), distress from action or inaction that violates one's values. Similarly, victim-survivors of CC can experience distressing guilt-related cognition (GRC) regarding the abuse and diminished self-compassion (SC). Given that research investigating relationships between CC and MI is limited, this study examined whether a positive relation between CC and MI could plausibly be mediated through indirect effects of high GRC

Frontline Perspectives on reintegration: Cognitive dissonance, moral injury-related distress, and psychological strain among security actors in Nigeria's Operation Safe Corridor.

This article examines the emotional and psychological experiences of military personnel involved in Nigeria's Operation Safe Corridor (OPSC), a deradicalization, rehabilitation, and reintegration (DRR) program for former Boko Haram combatants. While existing research on Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR) has focused primarily on ex-combatants and community outcomes, limited attention has been given to the psychological impact on security actors responsible for implementation. Drawing on Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of semi-structured interviews with eight Nigerian

Relationship Between Clinical Decision-Making and Moral Distress in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Nurses: A Multicenter Cross-Sectional Correlational Descriptive Study.

BACKGROUND: In the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), nurses care for premature and critically ill neonates, interact with parents, and make clinical decisions regarding the treatment of neonates in life-threatening conditions. The challenges of managing unstable conditions and resuscitation decisions can cause moral distress in nurses. PURPOSE: This study aims to determine the relationship between clinical decision-making and moral distress in NICU nurses. METHODS: This cross-sectional, multicenter, descriptive correlational study involved 190 nurses working in 7 NICUs across hospitals in

'I am afraid you will see the stain on my soul': Direct gaze neural processing in individuals with PTSD after moral injury recall.

Direct eye contact is essential to understanding others' thoughts and feelings in social interactions. However, those with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and exposure to moral injury (MI) may exhibit altered theory-of-mind (ToM)/mentalizing processes and experience shame which precludes one's capacity for direct eye contact. We investigated blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) responses associated with direct vs averted gaze using a virtual reality paradigm in individuals with PTSD (n = 28) relative to healthy controls (n = 18) following recall of a MI vs a neutral memory. Validation of the German Version of the Moral Injury Symptom and Support Scale for Health Professionals (G-MISS-HP) and Its Correlation to the Second Victim Phenomenon.

INTRODUCTION: Comparable to second victim phenomenon (SVP), moral injury (MI) affects health professionals (HP) working in stressful environments. Information on how MI and SVP intercorrelate and their part in a psychological trauma complex is limited. We tested and validated a German version of the Moral Injury Symptom and Support Scale for Health Professionals (G-MISS-HP) instrument, screening for MI and correlated it with the recently developed German version of the Second Victim Experience and Support Tool (G-SVESTR) instrument, testing for SVP. METHODS: After translating Moral Injury Sym

Patterns of distress associated with exposure to potentially morally injurious events among Canadian Armed Forces service members and Veterans: A multi-method analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This study describes patterns of distress associated with exposure to potentially morally injurious experiences (PMIEs) in a Canadian military sample. METHOD: Thematic analysis was performed on interviews from PMIE-exposed military members and Veterans. Participants also completed structured diagnostic interviews, and measures of trauma exposure and psychopathology. Multiple regression examined associations among these variables. Information on pharmacological treatment and past diagnoses are reported. RESULTS: Eight qualitative themes were identified: changes in moral attitudes,

A comparison of depressive mood of older adults in a community, nursing homes, and a geriatric hospital: factor analysis of Geriatric Depression Scale.

The Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS)-15 was used in 607 adults aged 65+ years living in a community, nursing homes, and a general hospital to explore characteristics of depressive mood in different care settings. Factor analysis of GDS-15 extracted 4 factors labeled unhappiness, apathy and anxiety, loss of hope and morale, and energy loss. The scale scores labeled unhappiness, apathy and anxiety, and loss of hope and morale were negatively correlated with the Barthel Index and the Mini-Mental State Examination scores. The results classified the depressive patterns into 2 types, one fitting the…

When elders fail to visit physicians.

Among people over age 70, 17% reported instances of not seeing a physician during the previous year when they thought they should for any one of four reasons, and 12% specifically because they thought the problem was due to their age. Elders with lower income, lower morale, and diminished health status were more likely to report instances of not seeing the physician for reasons of perceived transportation problems, cost difficulties, or because they thought the problem was due to their age; those with higher incomes, without private insurance, living alone, male, and with lower morale were mor…

Public trust and moral perceptions as predictors of anticipated preventive behavior toward future epidemics among adults in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Future epidemic preparedness depends partly on public willingness to follow preventive measures. This study examined whether public trust and moral perceptions were associated with anticipated preventive behavior toward future epidemics among adults in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey included 256 adults. Three 10-item constructs measured public trust, moral perceptions, and anticipated behavior using five-point Likert scales. Internal consistency, correlations, subgroup comparisons, multiple regression, and a fully adjusted general linear model were evaluat

Youth psychopathic traits and delinquent behavior among adolescents in Saudi social observation centers: the indirect role of moral disengagement and the moderating role of cognitive empathy.

INTRODUCTION: Juvenile delinquency is associated with multiple individual-level psychological domains, but youth psychopathic traits, moral disengagement, and cognitive empathy have been less directly examined within a single theory-informed structural model among justice-involved adolescents. This study tested a cross-sectional structural model linking youth psychopathic traits, moral disengagement, cognitive empathy, and delinquent behavior among adolescents residing in social observation centers in Saudi Arabia. METHODS: The sample included 171 adolescents recruited from nine social observ

Exposure to potentially morally injurious events and long-term psychological outcomes among Dutch military service members deployed to Afghanistan: A latent class approach.

Exposure to potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs) during military deployment is common and may lead to long-lasting negative psychological consequences, referred to as moral injury. Few studies investigated long-term outcomes following exposure to PMIEs. This study investigated patterns of exposure to PMIEs during deployment and associations with long-term psychological outcomes in a cohort (N = 471) of Dutch Afghanistan veterans 10 years post-deployment. Latent class analysis was used to identify classes characterized by patterns of exposure to PMIEs. We investigated differences betwee

Integrating sociocultural theories to inform public health response: unique relationships between moral foundations, cultural cognition worldviews, and COVID-19 attitudes and behaviors.

Key variables from Moral Foundations Theory and the Cultural Theory of Risk were examined in relationship to COVID-19 attitudes and behaviors. Two surveys were conducted with unvaccinated U. S. adults (n = 1,025) that assessed five moral foundations (care, fairness, authority, loyalty, and purity), two dimensions of Cultural Cognition Worldviews (individualism-communitarianism and hierarchy-egalitarianism), COVID-19 vaccination likelihood and related attitudes (including measures of perceived risk, protective behavior, and trust), political orientation, and demographic characteristics. Isolation of Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis from Lutzomyia spinicrassa (species group Verrucarum) Morales Osorno Mesa, Osorno and Hoyos 1969, in the Venezuelan Andean region.

Natural infection with Leishmania spp. in phlebotomine sandflies was searched for during a longitudinal study carried out from July 1997 to July 1998 in the village Catarnica, Municipality Independencia, Táchira State. This hamlet is an old endemic focus of cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Venezuelan Andean region, which lies close to the Colombian border at 1,300 m a.s.l., in an agricultural area mainly used for cultivating coffee. Phlebotomine sandflies were collected using Shannon traps placed in the peridomestic habitat from 19:00 to 21:00 hs. Males were stored in alcohol 70 % while females

War-related continuous traumatic stress as a potential mediator of associations between moral distress and professional quality of life in nurses: a cross-sectional study in Ukraine.

BACKGROUND: At the beginning of 2022, Central Europe entered a state of emergency due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Nurses were particularly vulnerable to a decline in their professional quality of life, facing repeated exposure to military trauma, ethical dilemmas, prolonged working hours, and increased stress and fatigue. This study aimed to contribute to our understanding of the potential mediating effect of war-related continuous traumatic stress on the association between moral distress and professional quality of life, including compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue, repre

Moral distress among health care workers and decision-makers undermines tuberculosis infection screening and treatment programs for migrants in Canada: a reflexive thematic analysis.

BACKGROUND: Routine screening of new immigrants for tuberculosis (TB) infection is being adopted or considered in high-income countries with a low burden of TB disease, such as Canada, but has major ethical implications due to the excess burden of costs and risks placed on migrants. We conducted a pragmatic qualitative study to understand health care providers’ and decision-makers’ perspectives on health care access, policy and ethics associated with screening and treating TB infection among new immigrants. METHODS: Between Aug. 2023 and Feb. 2024, we conducted semi-structured interviews with
