Effects of Combined Music and Exercise Therapy on Depression: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a common psychiatric disorder that impacts millions globally. Non-pharmacological treatments, such as combining music and exercise therapy, have shown potential as alternatives to medication. This meta-analysis evaluates the impact of integrating music with exercise on depressive symptoms. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted across multiple databases. Randomized controlled trials of combined music and exercise therapy for patients with mild, moderate, or severe depression were included. Interventions included any exercise paired with music therap…

A Bibliometric Analysis of Music's Role in Promoting Well-Being in Health Science Research.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between music and well-being has gained scholarly interest due to its implications for mental health and rehabilitation. However, no large-scale bibliometric analysis has captured global trends in this interdisciplinary field. This study addresses this gap by systematically mapping music and well-being research, identifying dominant themes and areas needing investigation. METHODS: We analyzed 16,585 peer-reviewed articles from Scopus (inception to May 2025) across psychology, medicine, and neuroscience. Using co-occurrence network analysis with VOSviewer 1.6.20, L…

"Sing it, interpret it": emotion-voice balance in character-construction for musical theater singers.

This qualitative study explores how experienced musical theater singers understand and manage the balance between emotional expression and vocal stability during character construction. Data source includes systematic observation, semi-structured interviews and field notes with five high-achieving musical theater soloists from the UK and China. The qualitative analysis of the data reveals a dual influence of emotion and voice, which means that emotions may threaten vocal stability through physiological disruptions but also can enhance vocal expressiveness. To address potential emotional outbur…

Generative Constraint: How Baroque Musical Structures Scaffold Creativity in Neurodiverse Learners.

Creativity is a central educational aim, yet learners in special education are too often left out of discussions of how to cultivate it. Music is frequently proposed to support them, and Baroque music especially, but the usual rationale, that such music directly improves cognition, rests on the discredited Mozart-effect literature. This paper offers a different foundation. It advances the thesis of generative constraint: structured musical environments do not enhance cognition but establish the affective and attentional conditions, principally through regulation, under which everyday (mini-c) …

Feel the beat, not the burn: Effects of self-selected music in time-to-exhaustion cycling.

The present study investigated the effects of exercising with self-selected music on exercise tolerance and related physiological responses during endurance cycling. Recreationally active adults (N = 29) completed two time-to-exhaustion (TTE) trials at ∼80% of peak power output under counterbalanced conditions: music (self-selected, 120-140 bpm) and no-music. Participants cycled longer with music (M = 35.61, SD = 14.01 min) than without (M = 29.80, SD = 11.47 min), t (28) = 3.62, p = .001, dz = 0.67. Heart-rate (HR) analyses (N = 27) showed greater cumulative cardiovascular load under music (A…

Musical Emotion Modulates Concrete and Abstract Word Processing: Evidence from ERPs.

Background/Objectives: Cross-modal emotional priming effects of music on language have been widely demonstrated, but how musical emotion interacts with different types of conceptual representation remains unclear. This study examined whether emotional musical contexts exert differential influences on the processing of concrete and abstract words, whose processing is thought to depend to different degrees on sensorimotor and affective experience. Methods: Two ERP experiments were conducted using a long stimulus-onset asynchrony priming paradigm with two independent groups of participants. In Ex…

A Semiotic Cultural Psychology Analysis of Musical Improvisation: Creativity as an Affective-Sociocultural Act.

This article examines the role of Affectivity in collaborative musical improvisation from a cultural-semiotic perspective. Drawing on published empirical accounts of free and jazz improvisation, we analyze how affective-semiotic regulation participates in the changing relations among musicians, musical materials, perspectives, and possibilities for action. The analysis focuses on pleromatization and schematization, perspectival-reflective semiosis, self-regulation, and orientation toward future possibilities. We argue that Affectivity operates across the distributed relations described by the …

Neural mechanisms underlying synchronization of movement to musical cues in Parkinson disease and aging.

INTRODUCTION: External and internal musical cues provide therapeutic techniques for gait rehabilitation in aging and neurological disorders. For people with Parkinson disease (PwPD), mental singing is a type of internal cue that can regularize gait timing. No studies to date have directly measured brain activity during external and internal musical cues as used in gait rehabilitation. Evidence suggests the neural mechanisms of external vs. internal cued movement differ. External cues are thought to drive movement via recruitment of cerebello-thalamo-cortical (CTC) pathways, while internal cues…

Implications for the Ergogenic Benefits of Self-Selected Music in Neurological Conditions: A Theoretical Review.

The ergogenic effects of music have been well described across various modes of exercise with widespread use across competitive athletes and recreational exercisers alike. Underlying the acute beneficial effects of music during exercise are profound physiological and psychological changes which involve an array of different organ systems, including but not limited to cardiovascular, endocrine, skeletal muscle, and nervous systems. While the use of music to enhance physical performance and improve associated mechanisms has been largely optimized in healthy individuals, the investigations of the…

Complex Pitch Perception Deficits in Dyslexia Persist Regardless of Previous Musical Experiences.

PURPOSE: Pitch perception is important for speech sound learning, and reading acquisition requires integration of speech sounds and written letters. Many individuals with dyslexia exhibit auditory perception deficits that may therefore contribute to their reading impairment given that complex pitch perception is crucial for categorizing speech sounds. Given rising interest in music training as a reading intervention, understanding associations between prior music experiences and pitch perception is important. This study explored the relationship between pitch perception skills and reading abil…

Musically evoked emotions in cochlear implant users and those with no known hearing loss.

BACKGROUND: Cochlear implants provide the profoundly deaf excellent speech comprehension; however, perception and appreciation of music remains a challenge. Previous work suggests that cochlear implant users, compared to normal-hearing listeners, have diminished perception of certain musically evoked emotions due to deficits in hearing pitch-related musical elements. The purpose of this study was to investigate how well cochlear implants users use pitch-based information to identify the emotional intent of music. METHODS: Twenty-six cochlear implant users and 24 peers with no known hearing lo…

Abnormal EEG activity in major depressive disorder during musical reward experience.

BACKGROUND: A major clinical feature of depression is anhedonia, which is closely linked to dysfunction of the reward system. But there is a lack of research on musical reward and its neuroelectrophysiological characteristics in depression. Therefore, we investigated these characteristics of major depressive disorder (MDD). METHODS: The EEG of 28 MDD and 30 healthy controls (HC) while listening to music was recorded to assess theta power spectral density (PSD), theta phase lag index (PLI), frontal alpha asymmetry (FAA), and beta/alpha ratio. RESULTS: The Barcelona Music Reward Questionnaire …
