The Preeclampsia Foundation: the voice and views of the patient and her family.

Preeclampsia is a disease exclusive to pregnancy and the immediate postpartum period, occurring in 4.6% of pregnancies worldwide. Preeclampsia and other gestational hypertensive disorders can affect any pregnant woman. The consequences of developing this disease can lead to severe maternal and neonatal morbidities and mortalities, including fetal growth restriction, placental abruption, preterm birth, stillbirth, and maternal death. When pregnant women recover, they are at higher risk of long-term complications such as hypertension, stroke, heart failure, renal disease, and Alzheimer disease.

Video as a public health knowledge transfer tool in Burkina Faso: A mixed evaluation comparing three narrative genres.

BACKGROUND: The dengue virus is endemic in many low- and middle-income countries. In Burkina Faso, the proportion of fevers that could be due to dengue is growing. In 2013, a dengue epidemic spread there, followed by other seasonal outbreaks. Dengue is often confused with malaria, and health workers are not trained to distinguish between them. Three training videos using different narrative genres were tested with nursing students from two institutions in Ouagadougou: journalistic, dramatic and animated video. The study aimed to determine if video is an effective knowledge transfer tool, if na

Historical ESWT Paradigms Are Overcome: A Narrative Review.

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) is a conservative treatment modality with still growing interest in musculoskeletal disorders. This narrative review aims to present an overview covering 20-year development in the field of musculoskeletal ESWT. Eight historical paradigms have been identified and put under question from a current perspective: energy intensity, focus size, anesthesia, imaging, growth plates, acuteness, calcifications, and number of sessions. All paradigms as set in a historical consensus meeting in 1995 are to be revised. First, modern musculoskeletal ESWT is divided int

A moving heart: querying a singular problem of 'immobility' in Afghan migration to the UK.

This article offers a single case study of everyday suffering (khapgan--Pakhto; "feeling down") experienced by one Afghan migrant in the United Kingdom, Zmarai. Single cases may destabilize categories of the political as conventionally institutionalized in relation to Afghan migrants according to such concepts as diaspora, citizenship, refugees, trauma, and culture, etc. Drawing theorizations of the way affects are key to a political economy's analysis of migrant labor ('a moving heart'), the study moves away from political or psychological categories centered on the trauma of war and displace

The representation of movement disorders in fictional literature.

This review considers novels, plays and poems dealing with movement disorders in order to show the relevance in the literary context. The motifs are arranged and compared following a modern neurological nosology according to Parkinson syndromes, dystonia, myoclonus, tics, hemifacial spasm, Tourette syndrome, Huntington's disease and hyperekplexia. There is considerable variety in how movement disorders are depicted and how much influence they have on the plot structures. Their usage ranges from a brief reference in order to accentuate aspects of a character's personality or social position, su

Brief narrative interventions for adults with chronic illness or psychosocial distress: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Narrative interventions elicit personal stories from participants to impact outcome(s). The process of organising a troublesome experience into a cohesive story may benefit individuals dealing with a variety of complex medical conditions and psychosocial stressors. A better understanding of prior work is a critical step to guide further development, refinement and expansion of this under-recognised therapeutic modality for new populations. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This scoping review will follow recommendations of the Joanna Briggs Institute and the Preferred Reporting Items for Sy

Trainee-delivered school-based intervention with guided narrative writing for adolescent anxiety and depression: a cluster randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety and depression affect 20% of children globally, with heightened risk during periods of crisis and substantial burden in low-resource settings where specialist services are scarce. Universal school-based interventions delivered by supervised trainees could promote youth mental health at scale, yet evidence for brief programs remains limited. We evaluated a brief cognitive-behavioral program (BRAVE: Be Emotionally Aware, Recognize Thoughts, Accept Challenges, Voice Emotions, Explore Solutions) with guided narrative writing (GNT-W) versus drawing control (GNT-D) among rural Ch

Using latent profiles to evaluate response to a language-based intervention.

Many children with oral language difficulties also experience challenges with word reading, as evidenced in the high comorbidity rate between developmental language disorders and dyslexia. The current study investigated a sample of students (n = 357) with language and literacy difficulties classified into latent classes based on pre-intervention performance on word reading and listening comprehension measures. Specifically, this study sought to determine the extent to which latent classes responded to an evidence-based, narrative language program at immediate post-test and a five-month follow-

Digital storytelling as a tool for community education and stigma reduction in tuberculosis.

This study compared digital storytelling with standard community education to reduce tuberculosis (TB) stigma. Prior work on digital storytelling in TB control often focuses on uptake, so effects measured during follow-up are less clear. A prospective mixed-methods evaluation compared community clusters. Surveys were completed before exposure and again at 3 months (90 days), alongside interviews and 30-day engagement records. The between-group difference in mean change in stigma score was -1.4 [-2.3, -0.4] with p = 0.006, which is consistent with larger average stigma reductions with digital s

Changing the narrative: A qualitative study on the impact of media portrayals on people with schizophrenia.

The stigma surrounding schizophrenia, heavily shaped by media portrayals, significantly affects individuals' lives, often delaying help-seeking and treatment. These negative representations can lead to social rejection, isolation, and worsened mental health outcomes. This qualitative study delves into the lived experiences of individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia, exploring how public perceptions of mental disorders, particularly schizophrenia, influence their health journeys and daily lives. Rooted in Gadamer's hermeneutic phenomenology, the study involved in-depth interviews with 10 parti

Disrupting the Master Narrative in Academic Biology as LGBTQ+ Ph.D. Students: Learning, Teaching, and Conducting Research.

LGBTQ+ individuals face discrimination and stigma in academic biology. These challenges are likely magnified for graduate students. However, there have been no studies documenting the experiences of LGBTQ+ life sciences graduate students. To address this gap, we conducted an interview study of 22 biology PhD students from 13 universities across the United States who identify as LGBTQ+. We used the master narrative framework to interpret our findings. Master narratives are guidelines that dictate the "expected" and "normal" way one is supposed to navigate life. We considered how graduate studen

Developing a Life Story Intervention for Older Adults With Dementia or at Risk of Delirium Who Were Hospitalized: Multistage, Stakeholder-Engaged Co-Design Study.

BACKGROUND: Older adults with chronic or acute cognitive impairment, such as dementia or delirium, who are hospitalized face unique barriers to person-centered care and a higher risk for negative outcomes stemming from hospitalizations. There is a need for co-designed interventions adapted for these patients to the hospital setting to improve care and outcomes. Patient life storytelling interventions have demonstrated promise in enhancing person-centered care by improving patient-care team relationships and providing information to enable care tailored to individual needs and values. Parent-authored memoirs: Lessons in the practice of narrative medicine.

Healthcare professionals, including practitioners of medical genetics and genetic counseling, have much to learn about the experiences of parents who are raising and caring for a child with a rare disease or developmental disability. Knowledge and understanding of the challenges in the care of a child with conditions such as Down syndrome and Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome are at the core of the practice of genetic medicine. Insights into this experience can come from active listening to stories and from deep reading of memoirs and narratives authored by parents of children having these challenges.
