Transient Receptor Potential Melastatin 8 (TRPM8) is a cold receptor activated by mild cold temperature (<28°C). TRPM8 expressed in cutaneous sensory nerves is involved in cold sensation and thermoregulation. TRPM8 mRNA is detected in various tissues, including the gastrointestinal mucosa, and in the vagal afferent nerve. The relationship between vagal afferent nerve-specific expression of TRPM8 and thermoregulation remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether TRPM8 expression in the vagal afferent nerve is involved in autonomic thermoregulation. We found that intragastric a

Repair of peripheral nerve injuries remains a major clinical challenge, motivating the development of bioelectroactive nerve guidance condui … onal restoration. Histological analyses further confirmed the reconstruction of structurally mature nerve tissue with reduced fibrosis. These findings demonstrate that the synergistic integration of biomimetic conductive conduits and electrical stimulation effectively promotes peripheral nerve regeneration through coordinated regulation of neuronal differentia …

Resection of oral and maxillofacial tumors is often accompanied by the inferior alveolar nerve neurectomy, resulting in abnormal sensation in lower lip. It is generally believed that spontaneous sensory recovery in this nerve injury is difficult. However, during our follow-up, patients with inferior alveolar nerve sacrifice showed different degrees of lower lip sensory recovery. In this study, a prospective cohort study was conducted to demonstrate this phenomenon and analyze the factors influencing sensory recovery. To reconstruct intraoral lining defects after radical tumor resection by reinnervated vascularized mucosa, eight distal radial forearm flaps and two fibula flaps were prelaminated. Prelamination was performed by exposing the vascularized fascia, onto which the split distal end of a sural graft was fixed. The fascia and the sural nerve graft were covered by device-meshed mucosa or small full-thickness mucosa pieces. These structures again were covered by a Silastic sheet as large as the future flap, and the wound was closed by the elevated skin and subcutaneous tissue. Coverage by a Silastic sh

Before clinical approval of chitosan nerve conduits (CNCs) less than 10 years ago, substantial material degradation was not reported from pre-clinical research. The current study investigated the biodegradation of two different CNC variants in the median nerve model. In adult rats, 10 mm long CNCs were secured covering end-to-end repair sites. After 2, 6, 12, and 18 months, the implantation sites were inspected, and samples harvested. Histology was performed in order to analyze local immune response or foreign body tissue reaction around the devices or within nerve samples. Further, the number

Indirect decompression in spinal surgery means decompression of spinal nerve tissues, such as spinal cord and nerve, without resecting the compressing tissue. Indirect spinal decompression procedures largely can be divided into segmental procedures and global spinal alignment procedures. Segmental procedures are mainly performed by the distraction between two vertebrae, which lead to the opening of the neural foramen and increases the epidural space. Such distraction can be performed through the disc space or using posterior instrumentation. Global spinal alignment procedures allow the spinal …

We examined soft tissue biopsies from 26 patients with symptomatic nerve root fibrosis and arachnoiditis after a previous laminectomy. Dense fibrous connective tissue was found about the nerve roots and in 14 cases (55%) fibrillar foreign material was seen within it. This material had the histochemical characteristics of cotton fibres from swabs and neurosurgical patties. In two other cases nerve root fibrosis was associated with residual radiopaque lipid thought to derive from earlier myelography. Our findings suggest that risks may be associated with the introduction of foreign material into

In longstanding recurrent laryngeal nerve paresis with parmedian fixation of the vocal cord the fine structure of the vocal muscle is surprisingly well preserved. Though there are in part bundles of atrophic muscle fibers and increased connective tissue, the normal ultrastructure of the remaining muscle and of the myelinated nerves remains always intact. It is assumed that the vocal cord is prevented from regaining its motility both by the increased connective tissue which misdirects the nerve fibers and by irreverisble changes of the cricoarytaenoid joint. The results are discussed in relatio

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Peripheral nerve injuries result in impaired neuromuscular interactions, leading to morphological and functional alterations. Adjuvant suture repair methods have been used to improve nerve regeneration and modulate the immune response. Heterologous fibrin biopolymer (HFB), a scaffold with adhesive properties, plays a critical role in tissue repair. The aim of this study is to evaluate neuroregeneration and immune response focusing on neuromuscular recovery, using suture-associated HFB for sciatic nerve repair.
METHODS: Forty adult male Wistar rats were distributed into four

PURPOSE: Recently we reported the use of renal nerve stimulation (RNS) during renal denervation (RDN) procedures. RNS induced changes in blood pressure (BP) and heart rate are not fully delineated yet. We hypothesized that electrical stimulation of the sympathetic nerve tissue in the renal artery would lead to an increase in BP and vagal stimulation would cause a decrease in BP. We report the different patterns of BP and heart rate responses elicited by RNS prior to RDN.
METHODS: 35 patients with drug-resistant hypertension were included. RNS was performed under general anesthesia at four sit…

PURPOSE: To test the feasibility of using multi-scale MRI texture analysis to assess optic nerve pathology and to investigate how visual recovery relates to the severity of acute tissue damage in the optic nerve in patients after optic neuritis (ON).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We recruited 25 patients with acute ON. Retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness; MRI lesion length and enhancement; optic nerve area ratio; and multi-scale MRI texture analysis, a measure of structural integrity, were used to assess tissue damage at baseline, and at 6 and 12 months. The recovery in vision was defined as

AIMS: The study evaluates the necessity of dissecting the tissue between the long thoracic and thoracodorsal nerves (internerve tissue) during axillary dissection in breast cancer surgery. By reviewing the lymph node yield and the metastatic rate in the internerve tissue, we examine whether the internerve tissue could be left in situ to minimize the risk of nerve injury.
METHODS: A prospective study was conducted on 30 consecutive women undergoing axillary lymphadenectomy for breast cancer. The internerve tissue remaining was excised separately after a routine axillary dissection and was exam…

We report three cases of progressive ulnar nerve palsy following fractures of the distal radius. One was an open injury and one involved dorsal displacement of the nerve through a dislocated distal radio-ulnar joint. All were associated with dense scar tissue formation around the nerve. Early surgical decompression was successful in all cases. An anatomical study indicated that the relative immunity of the nerve to injury in this region may be due to its greater excursion and mobility compared with the median nerve.

CASE: A 39-year-old woman presented with a ganglion cyst in the carpal tunnel simultaneously compressing the right median nerve and the deep palmar branch of the ulnar nerve. During surgery, the soft tissue was exposed under the median nerve and on the deep palmar branch of the ulnar nerve running transversely in the deep area of the carpal tunnel.
CONCLUSION: Simultaneous compression of the median nerve and deep palmar branch of the ulnar nerve is extremely rare; however, such a pathoanatomical relationship must be considered while examining a patient because these nerves are located close t

BACKGROUND: The postoperative development of epineural and extraneural scar tissue adversely affects peripheral nerve surgery outcomes. Although several surgical methods, pharmacological agents, and chemical materials have been used to prevent epineural scar formation in both clinical and experimental models, the results are still unsatisfactory. The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of buccal mucosa graft (BMG) wrapping on epineural scarring in an adult rat model.
METHODS: Bilateral sciatic nerves were carefully exposed in 24 adult Sprague-Dawley rats, and a circumferenti

To elucidate parasympathetic cerebrovascular innervation of the rat sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG), we injected wheat germ agglutinin-conjugated horseradish peroxidase into the SPG of one side and traced anterogradely labeled nerve fibers. Three days after the injection, the animals were killed and tissues including the SPG, major cerebral arteries, and ethmoidal arteries were reacted by the tetramethylbenzidine method. A number of cells and nerve fibers labeled with wheat germ agglutinin-conjugated horseradish peroxidase were observed in the SPG. The nasal mucous membrane, the periorbital soft
