Relationship of nevocytic nevi to sun exposure in dysplastic nevus syndrome.

In eighty consecutive patients who have the dysplastic nevus syndrome, the concentration of nevocytic nevi on the relatively sun-protected lateral thoracic area was compared to the concentration on the relatively sun-exposed areas of the anterior and posterior thorax. Nevocytic nevi in an area 7 X 20 cm were counted in each location. There was a total of 177 nevi on the lateral thorax (average, 2.2 nevi/person), 361 on the anterior thorax (average, 4.5 nevi/person), and 506 on the posterior thorax (average, 6.3 nevi/person). Men showed no significant difference in the number of nevi on the ant…

Neuroradiological findings in Jadassohn nevus phakomatosis: a report of four cases.

Four patients with Jadassohn nevus phakomatosis (linear nevus sebaceus syndrome, Schimmelpenning-Feuerstein syndrome) are described. Neuroradiological findings consisted of skull asymmetry shown by X-rays and hemimegalencephaly with ventricular system asymmetry on CT. Three of the patients showed, in addition, a widened insula. In two patients areas of increased density suggesting calcium deposits were seen. Skull asymmetry was progressive during infancy in two of the patients. It is presumed that these findings are secondary to the progression of the underlying central nervous system disorder…

Junctional nevus of the oral mucosa. Light and electron microscopic observations.

Junctional nevi of the oral mucosa are rare and may be precancerous. A patient who had an enlarging junctional nevus of the labial mucosa with an adjacent lentigo simplex was studied by light and electron microscopy. On the basis of morphologic similarities--dentritic appearance, lack of desmonsomes, proliferative melanin production, and lack of cytoplasmic fibrils--it appears that the nevus cell most likely develops from melanocytes. The reason for the transformation from melanocyte to nevus cell or junctional nevus cell hyperplasia is unknown.

Congenital Melanocytic Nevus Mimicking a Coccygeal Pad in the Sacrococcygeal Region.

Congenital melanocytic nevus (CMN) is a benign melanocytic proliferative lesion that presents at birth or in early infancy. When the lesion extends into the deep dermis or subcutaneous tissue, it can form a mass that is clinically and radiologically indistinguishable from other soft tissue tumors. We report a case of sacrococcygeal CMN mimicking a coccygeal pad. An 18-year-old man presented with a sacrococcygeal mass and tenderness. Magnetic resonance imaging and needle biopsy findings suggested a coccygeal pad. Because of persistent pain and the patient's desire for removal, the mass was exci…

A rare case of multifocal prostatic blue nevus: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Prostatic blue nevus (PBN) is an exceptionally rare benign melanocytic lesion of the prostate, usually discovered incidentally. CASE PRESENTATION: A 59-year-old Iranian male in otherwise good health presented to a urology clinic with an elevated PSA of 5.8 and obstructive symptoms. Digital rectal examination was normal. Trans-rectal ultrasound-guided biopsy revealed blue nevus in 4 out of 12 cores. Histology showed pigmented spindle cells in stroma confirmed by Fontana-Masson stain. Immunohistochemistry was positive for S100, HMB45, and Melan-A. No malignancy was …

Uveal melanoma associated with Nevus of Ota in a German Shepherd dog.

A 4-year-old male German Shepherd dog was presented with a 3-day history of ocular pain in the right eye. The owner reported facial skin hyperpigmentation on the right side since puppyhood, consistent with a congenital condition known as Nevus of Ota or (oculo)dermal melanocytosis. Ophthalmological examination of the right eye revealed diffuse corneal oedema, vascular scleral congestion, diffuse iris hyperpigmentation, iris bombè and dyscoria; intraocular pressure was markedly elevated (41 mmHg). Ipsilateral facial skin was diffusely hyperpigmented along ophthalmic and maxillary branch innerva…

Longitudinal High-Resolution Imaging of Retinal Sequelae of a Choroidal Nevus.

Background: Choroidal nevi are common, benign tumors. These tumors rarely cause adverse retinal sequalae, but when they do, they can lead to disruption of the outer retina and vision loss. In this paper, we used high-resolution retinal imaging modalities, optical coherence tomography (OCT) and adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (AOSLO), to longitudinally monitor retinal sequelae of a submacular choroidal nevus. Methods: A 31-year-old female with a high-risk choroidal nevus resulting in subretinal fluid (SRF) and a 30-year-old control subject were longitudinally imaged with AOSLO and…

Clinical Outcomes of Photodynamic Therapy for Choroidal Nevus with Subfoveal Fluid.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the outcomes of photodynamic therapy (PDT) for choroidal nevus associated with subfoveal fluid. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Electronic medical records were reviewed for patients diagnosed with choroidal nevus and treated with PDT at a single center in Seoul, South Korea, from January 2019 to December 2023. Patient demographics, tumor characteristics, and clinical progress following PDT, including changes in foveal subretinal fluid (SRF) height, central subfield thickness (CST), corrected distant visual acuity (CDVA), tumor size, and fluid recurrence, were analyzed. RESULTS: S…

Incidental Nodal Nevus in the Sentinel Lymph Node of a Melanoma Patient.

Dear Editor, Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is crucial for melanoma staging, but the presence of nodal nevi (NN) can complicate diagnosis by mimicking metastatic melanoma. Misclassification occurs in over 10% of cases, potentially leading to overtreatment [1]. We present a case of a 53-year-old woman with superficial spreading melanoma (SSM), where SLNB revealed a capsular NN without metastasis. A 53-year-old female patient was referred to our department with an atypical nevus on her right calf. Following its excision, histological analysis confirmed the diagnosis of SSM with a Breslow thic…

Invasive cellular blue nevus in the cervical spine: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Cellular blue nevus is an uncommon neoplasm in the spine. PATIENT CONCERNS: Here, we present a case of a 24 years old male with a 2 months history of numbness in the right upper limb and shoulder. DIAGNOSIS: Cervical spine and subcutaneous tissue invasive cellular blue nevus. INTERVENTIONS: The patient underwent C4 laminectomy and partial C3 and C5 laminectomy for total resection of the lesion. Histopathology revealed a nodular tumor with unclear boundaries, which was composed of heavily pigmented dendritic cells and more pigmented spindle cells. OUTCOMES: There was no recurr…

Conjunctival blue nevus in a child - Case report and review of literature.

PURPOSE: To report a rare case of a conjunctival blue nevus in a child. OBSERVATIONS: A 10-year-old girl underwent an excisional biopsy for an atypical growing melanocytic conjunctival lesion. The diagnosis of a conjunctival blue nevus was confirmed on histopathology. We describe the histopathology and the anterior segment optical coherence tomography features of a blue nevus in a 10-year-old child along with a review of literature. CONCLUSION AND IMPORTANCE: Conjunctival blue nevus is rare and has rarely been reported in a child. Multimodal imaging may help document lesion progression. This…

An uncommon presentation of segmental Becker's nevus involving the T4 dermatome.

This case report explores a rare manifestation of Becker's nevus, where the patient exhibited an unusual dermatomal distribution featuring a hyperpigmented, irregular patch with associated hypertrichosis on the T4 segment. While Becker's nevus is a well-known dermatological condition typically observed in the upper back region, instances of dermatomal distribution are exceptionally uncommon. This case presents a unique occurrence of segmental Becker's nevus, highlighting the atypical presentation of this condition.
