Increasing Palliative Care Consultation Through a Nurse-Driven Screening Protocol on a Medical-Surgical Unit.

Palliative care consultation frequently occurs late in hospitalization despite known benefits for symptom management and care planning. Nurses often recognize unmet needs but may hesitate to initiate referral because of uncertainty, misconceptions, and reliance on physician direction. Lack of standardized identification processes contributes to inconsistent and potentially inequitable access to palliative services. This quality improvement project evaluated whether a nurse-driven screening tool combined with targeted education increased palliative care consultation rates and nursing knowledge

Sleep Quality as a Mediator Between Digital Competence and Online Exam Anxiety Among Nursing Students.

BACKGROUND: Nursing students increasingly have online examinations, which can provoke significant anxiety. Digital competence, the ability to confidently and critically use digital technologies for learning and professional practice, has become essential for navigating these digital assessment environments; yet, its relationship with exam anxiety remains underexplored. PURPOSE: This study examined whether sleep quality mediates and/or moderates the relationship between digital competence and online exam anxiety among nursing students. METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive correlational desi

Nursing Care for a Patient With Septic Shock Caused by Pyogenic Streptococcus and Necrotising Fasciitis in the Right Lower Limb.

Necrotising fasciitis (NF) is a rapidly progressing and life-threatening soft tissue infectious disease characterised by extensive necrosis of the fascia and subcutaneous tissue and is often accompanied by systemic toxic shock and multiple organ dysfunction. In recent years, the incidence rate of invasive Streptococcus pyogenes (GAS)infection has increased, and some strains exhibit high virulence and drug resistance, increasing the difficulty of clinical treatment. We aim to provide more precise and efficient nursing solutions for patients with necrotising fasciitis through the whole process m

Developing Competency-Based Nursing Treatment for Persons With Tobacco Use Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco continues to have a deleterious impact on health outcomes in the United States. Professional nurses at all levels of practice have an opportunity to be a part of the solution. The development of nurse-specific competencies for treating tobacco use disorder (TUD) disorder is long overdue. A task force of American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) subject matter experts was assembled to engage in the process of reviewing the available peer-reviewed literature and additional evidence-based resources (e.g., professional organization position statement, toolkits, national su

Outpatient parathyroidectomy: a new paradigm from a nursing perspective.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Nursing assessment and management regarding the care of patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (1 degrees HPTH) has evolved in parallel with the marked changes in diagnosis and surgical approach to the disease. Earlier diagnosis and vast advancements in surgical approach has shifted the paradigm of nursing intervention into the outpatient setting. RECENT FINDINGS: The early detection of 1 degrees HPTH has become more prevalent in the preceding three decades. The clinical profile has shifted to minimally symptomatic or asymptomatic patients who have excess serum PTH level

[The course of Alzheimer's disease in a group of nursing home patients: epidemiology, (co)morbidity and mortality].

One hundred medical charts of patients of a psychogeriatric nursing home with 'possible' (senile) dementia of the Alzheimer type were reviewed. Eighty-seven patients had died and 13 were alive at the time of analysis. The aim of the study was to obtain epidemiological information and to investigate (co)morbidity and mortality of these patients. All the data of this group of nursing home patients appeared to have a wide range. The process of dementia started at a mean age of about 75 years and patients remained in their homes for more than five years before admission. The average time spent in

The use of a clinical algorithm for urinary catheterization.

Urinary catheterization is undertaken for a number of clinical conditions. Debate continues as to whether clinicians use catheters appropriately following thorough assessment or if they sometimes catheterize as it makes for easier clinical management. This article looks at the nursing process concerning safe and clinically relevant catheterization. PCTs have local algorithms for effective catheterization, an example of which is given here. Mention is made to the correct catheterization technique, with a look at commonly available catheter types.

You are what you eat: healthy food choices, nutrition, and the child with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

Children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) often experience nutrition related concerns. Growth abnormalities are common. Protein-calorie malnutrition and inadequate intake of other nutrients result from aspects of the disease process, treatment (including drug treatment), and dietary choices. Mechanical feeding difficulties can also compromise adequate intake. Because nursing assessments usually explore eating habits and family issues, the registered nurse is in a good position to identify nutrition concerns, to provide intervention recommendations, or to act as a referral source.

An antiviral factor from Melia azedarach L. prevents Tacaribe virus encephalitis in mice.

Treatment of neonatal mice with an antiviral factor, (AVF), obtained from the leaves of Melia azedarach L. protected them against lethal encephalitis caused by Tacaribe virus inoculation. The degree of protection obtained varied from 66% to 100% depending on the virus dose. Similarly, administration of AVF to nursing mothers protected their offspring from developing virus encephalitis. AVF does not directly inactivate Tacaribe virus; it inhibits an early step (s) in the replication process in cell cultures.

Nurse-Led, Equity-Driven Quality Improvement: An Adaptation of the Donabedian Model.

Equity and justice have long been positioned as moral imperatives in nursing, yet operational models of quality improvement seldom integrate these values at a theoretical level. This concept development adapts the Donabedian model to align structural competence, social mission, and equitable outcomes, offering a mid-range theory to guide nurse-led quality improvement, education, and policy: the Equity-Driven Quality Framework. This equity-driven reconfiguration relies on the familiar structure-process-outcome triad, then extends it to intentionally incorporate health equity as a defining crite
