[Anorexia nervosa complicated with pulmonary tuberculosis].

A study was made on a patient with anorexia nervosa complicated with pulmonary tuberculosis treated with intravenous hyperalimentation (IVH). A 24-year-old female was admitted to our hospital because of progressive loss of body weight during medication for pulmonary tuberculosis at another hospital. She was diagnosed as having anorexia nervosa. After the nutritional assessment IVH was performed. As a result of IVH, her body weight increased and her nutritional deprivation, (i.e., low visceral proteins, low branched amino acids, etc.) recovered. Nutritional support was effective upon treating p

Improved nasogastric intubation technique for administration of nutritional support in dogs.

Established procedures for nasogastric intubation are difficult to perform in dogs because of anatomic variation of nasal passages and turbinate structures. Twenty-five clinically normal dogs were used to improve and refine the technique of nasogastric tube placement, and 13 clinical patients at our teaching hospital were evaluated for malnutrition and were considered candidates for nutritional support by nasogastric tube feeding. An improved method for the placement of nasogastric tubes in dogs was used. By pushing the external nares dorsally while advancing the tube in a caudoventral, medial

Cefmetazole-Induced Coagulopathy in a Patient With Vitamin K Deficiency: A Case Report With Literature Review.

Cefmetazole (CMZ), a cephamycin antibiotic containing an N-methyltetrazolethiol (NMTT) group, is known to interfere with vitamin K metabolism, potentially causing coagulation disorders. We present the case of a 78-year-old man with chronic kidney disease who developed a coagulation disorder during CMZ administration, exacerbated by chronic vitamin K deficiency from prolonged enteral nutrition. In the context of chronic vitamin K deficiency precipitated by prolonged enteral nutrition for renal disease, the administration of CMZ-a medication that disrupts vitamin K metabolism and reduces coagula

The Fascinating and Complex Role of the Placenta in Pregnancy and Fetal Well-being.

Existing evidence implicates the placenta as the origin of some common pregnancy complications. Moreover, some maternal conditions, such as inadequate nutrition, diabetes, and obesity, are known to adversely affect placental function, with subsequent negative impact on the fetus and newborn. The placenta may also contribute to fetal programming with health consequences into adulthood, such as cardiovascular, metabolic, and mental health disorders. There is evidence that altered placental development, specifically impaired trophoblast invasion and spiral artery remodeling in the first trimester

Small bowel transplantation.

Many patients die each year lacking only a functional small bowel to survive. The minimum amount of small intestinal absorptive surface required to sustain life varies from patient to patient. Prolonged survival with oral alimentation alone has been reported in a few patients with an intact duodenum and as little as 15-45 cm of residual jejunum. However, without long-term total parenteral nutrition (TPN), prolonged patient survival is the exception rather than the rule. Chronic parenteral nutrition is associated with complications, including sepsis, venous thrombosis, metabolic disorders and l

Influence of dietary sucrose on biological aging.

The segment of the population aged > 65 y is the fastest growing age segment in most developed countries. The increasing numbers of individuals living into their eighth and ninth decades of life have shifted the focus of biomedical research from seeking mechanisms for extending life to finding ways to improve health and to reduce age-related morbidity. One area of research that has shown considerable promise for improving the health of elderly people is nutrition. I review recent literature pertinent to the influences of nutrition on biological aging by discussing the effects of dietary sucros

Chromium and parenteral nutrition.

Studies involving patients on total parenteral nutrition (TPN) led to conclusive documentation of the essential role of Cr in human nutrition. These patients developed severe diabetic symptoms including glucose intolerance, weight loss, impaired energy utilization, and nerve and brain disorders that were refractory to insulin. After addition of Cr to TPN fluids, diabetic symptoms were alleviated, and exogenous insulin was no longer required. Cr intake by healthy subjects consuming average Westernized diets is suboptimal; if these subjects experience severe physical trauma or other forms of str

[Total parenteral nutrition in the adult. Theoretical aspects (author's transl)].

When oral or enteral feeding becomes impossible or inadequate, total parenteral nutrition makes it possible to reduce the occurrence of malnutrition states as complications of medicosurgical disorders. From a practical point of view it should provide a minimum fluid intake of 30 ml/kg with a nitrogen intake of the order of 150 to 300 mg/kg/day with sufficient quantities of all essential amino acids in a balanced ration. In most instances the calorie intake should be 40 to 60 Kcal/kg/day. Non-protein calories are obtained from carbohydrates or fats but the ideal percentage of each of these two

Sex differences in immune modulation: implications for infection, inflammation, and nutritional supplementation.

The immune system is central to maintaining homeostasis and orchestrating defense against infection and the regulation of inflammatory responses, yet its activity is far from uniform across individuals. Sex differences profoundly shape immune responses, with sex hormones driving distinct patterns of susceptibility to infectious diseases and inflammatory conditions. Nutrition further adds a powerful layer of modulation: vitamins, amino acids, and other bioactive compounds influence immune function and disease outcomes, often in a sex-dependent manner. The microbiome, whose composition is itself

Evolving nutrition therapy in cystic fibrosis: Adapting to the CFTR modulator era.

Cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator (CFTR)-directed therapies, such as modulators, have transformed the medical management of people with CF, resulting in better lung function, weight, and body mass index in recent years. With improved nutrition status in people on CFTR modulators, the emphasis on a high-energy, high-fat diet (the legacy CF diet) is declining, with an increased focus on a healthy diet. The increased survival and median predicted age of people with CF have created a need for more attention to metabolic diseases, including hypertension, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular disea

Ketogenic therapy towards precision medicine for brain diseases.

Precision nutrition and nutrigenomics are emerging in the development of therapies for multiple diseases. The ketogenic diet (KD) is the most widely used clinical diet, providing high fat, low carbohydrate, and adequate protein. KD produces ketones and alters the metabolism of patients. Growing evidence suggests that KD has therapeutic effects in a wide range of neuronal diseases including epilepsy, neurodegeneration, cancer, and metabolic disorders. Although KD is considered to be a low-side-effect diet treatment, its therapeutic mechanism has not yet been fully elucidated. Also, its induced

Diagnostic reasoning in rehabilitation nutrition: Position paper by the Japanese Association of Rehabilitation Nutrition (secondary publication).

Diagnostic reasoning is the thought process used to arrive at a diagnosis based on symptoms, examination findings, and laboratory values. Diagnosis is categorized as nonanalytic reasoning (intuition) and analytic reasoning (analysis). Rehabilitation nutrition involves the diagnosis of nutritional disorders, sarcopenia, and excess or deficient nutrient intake. There is usually only one correct answer for the presence or absence of these. On the other hand, there may be no single correct answer for the causes of anorexia, weight loss, or sarcopenia, and analytical reasoning is required. In this
