Surgical anatomy of endoscope-assisted approaches to common aneurysm sites.

BACKGROUND: The endoscope is being introduced as an adjuvant to improve visualization of certain areas in open cranial surgery. OBJECTIVE: To describe the endoscopic anatomy of common aneurysm sites and to compare it with the microsurgical anatomy. METHODS: Pterional, anterior interhemispheric, and subtemporal approaches to the most common aneurysm sites were examined in cadaveric heads under the surgical microscope and with the endoscope. RESULTS: The endoscopic view, particularly with the angled endoscopes, provides a significant improvement compared with the microscopic view, especially

THE NATURAL HISTORY OF HUMAN POLIOMYELITIS : I. DISTRIBUTION OF VIRUS IN NERVOUS AND NON-NERVOUS TISSUES.

1. Studies on a large number of tissues obtained from fatal cases of human poliomyelitis have revealed that the virus is distributed predominantly in two systems: (a) certain regions of the nervous system, and (b) the alimentary tract. 2. Poliomyelitis virus was demonstrated in the walls of the pharynx, ileum, and only once in those of the descending colon, while the contents of the descending colon regularly contained the virus. 3. The presence of virus in the walls of the alimentary tract appears to be the result neither of generalized dissemination of the virus nor of secondary centrifugal

GABAergic mechanisms are involved in the control of tuberoinfundibular arcuate neurons by the accessory olfactory bulb.

In this study we examined electrophysiologically the involvement of the intrinsic GABAergic system of the accessory olfactory bulb (AOB) in controlling the activity of tuberoinfundibular (TI) arcuate neurons in anaesthetized female mice. Local infusions of the gamma-aminobutyric acid-A (GABAA) receptor antagonist, bicuculline into the AOB enhanced the spontaneous firing activity of TI arcuate neurons with excitatory inputs from the AOB. This finding reveals a neural mechanism responsible for the pregnancy blocking effect of this drug in freely behaving female mice and, taken together with the

Calcium permeable AMPA receptors and autoreceptors in external tufted cells of rat olfactory bulb.

Glomeruli are functional units of the olfactory bulb responsible for early processing of odor information encoded by single olfactory receptor genes. Glomerular neural circuitry includes numerous external tufted (ET) cells whose rhythmic burst firing may mediate synchronization of bulbar activity with the inhalation cycle. Bursting is entrained by glutamatergic input from olfactory nerve terminals, so specific properties of ionotropic glutamate receptors on ET cells are likely to be important determinants of olfactory processing. Particularly intriguing is recent evidence that AMPA receptors o

Alarm pheromone activates posterior medial amygdala-to-bed nucleus of the stria terminalis projections in male rats.

Animals communicate using olfactory signals called pheromones. Alarm pheromones are evolutionarily conserved and alert conspecifics to danger. In rats, a mixture of hexanal and 4-methylpentanal was identified as the main component that evokes anxiety responses by activating the anterior bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (aBNST). In addition, the posteroventral medial amygdala (pvMeA) was proposed to transmit the alarm pheromone signal to the aBNST. Here, we assessed whether the binary mixture activates direct pvMeA-to-aBNST projections or indirect projections via other MeA subdivisions in ma

Endoplasmic reticulum proteins Meigo and Gp93 govern dendrite targeting by regulating Toll-6 localization.

Neuronal target recognition is performed by numerous cell-surface transmembrane proteins. Correct folding of these proteins occurs in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) lumen of the neuronal cells before being transported to the plasma membrane of axons or dendrites. Disturbance in this protein folding process in the ER leads to dysfunction of neuronal cell surface molecules, resulting in abnormal neuronal targeting. In this study, we report that the ER-resident protein Meigo in Drosophila, governs the dendrite targeting of olfactory projection neurons (PNs) along the mediolateral axis of the ante

[A case of olfactory neuroblastoma with intracranial, intraorbital extension and multiple metastases].

A 51-year-old man presented with headache, vomiting and exophthalmus. Neurological examination revealed anosmia, papilledema, decrease in visual acuity, and disability in ocular movement. MRI showed a huge mass which occupied the whole nasal cavity and compressed the frontal lobe upwards and the eyes laterally. CT revealed an extensive bony destruction of the frontal base and bilateral orbits. The mass was biopsied transnasally, and was histologically diagnosed as olfactory neuroblastoma. It was highly radiosensitive and disappeared with a local irradiation of 40 Gy. Three months later the pat

Population differences in benzodiazepine sensitive male scent-induced analgesia in the deer mouse, Peromyscus maniculatus.

We compared opioid and nonopioid involvement in the mediation of scent-induced analgesia in two populations of deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus; P. m. artemisiae from a mainland region and P. m. angustus from a small marine island. Exposure to bedding taken from the soiled home cage of an isolated (dominant aggressive) male resident elicited a significant increase in the nociceptive responses of male deer mice from mixed sex pairs, with the island population of mice displaying significantly greater analgesic responses than the mainland animals. In the mainland population of mice, the large am

Immunocytochemical localization of LH-RH in the brain and pituitary of the catfish, Clarias batrachus (Linn.).

An elaborate organization of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LH-RH) immunoreactive (ir) cells and fibers was encountered in the olfactory system of Clarias batrachus. In addition to the ir structures in the olfactory nerve, peripheral area of the olfactory bulb, and the medial olfactory tract (MOT), ir cells and fibers were prominently seen in the lamellae of the olfactory organ. Perikarya showing varying degrees of intensity of immunoreaction were observed along the base of the forebrain in the nucleus preopticus basalis lateralis, nucleus preopticus periventricularis, nucleus preoptic

Studies on retrograde and anterograde amnesia of olfactory memory after denervation of the hippocampus by entorhinal cortex lesions.

The effect of hippocampal denervation on olfactory memory in rats was tested after interrupting the lateral olfactory tract projections at the level of the entorhinal cortex. When lesioned animals were trained to learn new odors, they showed no evidence of retention 3 h after acquisition. These results confirm earlier data on rapid forgetting in rats after hippocampal deafferentation and are in parallel to the anterograde amnesia typically found in humans with hippocampal damage. On the other hand, preoperatively learned information was minimally impaired after hippocampal deafferentation even

External tufted cells drive the output of olfactory bulb glomeruli.

Odors synchronize the activity of olfactory bulb mitral cells that project to the same glomerulus. In vitro, a slow rhythmic excitation intrinsic to the glomerular network persists, even in the absence of afferent input. We show here that a subpopulation of juxtaglomerular cells, external tufted (ET) cells, may trigger this rhythmic activity. We used paired whole-cell recording and Ca(2+) imaging in bulb slices from wild-type and transgenic mice expressing the fluorescent Ca(2+) indicator protein GCaMP-2. Slow, periodic population bursts in mitral cells were synchronized with spontaneous disch

GnRH neuronal migration and olfactory bulb neurite outgrowth are dependent on FGF receptor 1 signaling, specifically via the PI3K p110α isoform in chick embryo.

Fibroblast growth factor (FGF) signaling is essential for both olfactory bulb (OB) morphogenesis and the specification, migration, and maturation of the GnRH-secreting neurons. Disruption of FGF signaling contributes to Kallmann syndrome characterized by both anosmia and sexual immaturity. However, several unanswered questions remain as to which specific FGF receptor (FGFR)-1 signaling pathways are necessary for OB and GnRH neuronal development. Here, using pharmacological phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) isoform-specific inhibitors, we demonstrate a central role for the PI3K p110α isoform

Direct transport of VEGF from the nasal cavity to brain.

The aim of the present study was to assess the potential of delivering VEGF directly into the central nervous system (CNS) following intranasal administration. Adult Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized into two groups, given [(125)I]-VEGF intranasally or intravenously. VEGF was intranasally administered in both nares alternately, the single dose is 10 microl with time interval of 2 min for about 18.5 min. The intravenous (IV) group was treated with 100 microl [(125)I]-VEGF intravenously. Thirty minutes after administration, rats were killed following blood sample collections, then the brains w

Alzheimer's disease and alpha-synuclein pathology in the olfactory bulbs of infants, children, teens and adults ≤ 40 years in Metropolitan Mexico City. APOE4 carriers at higher risk of suicide accelerate their olfactory bulb pathology.

There is growing evidence that air pollution is a risk factor for a number of neurodegenerative diseases, most notably Alzheimer's (AD) and Parkinson's (PD). It is generally assumed that the pathology of these diseases arises only later in life and commonly begins within olfactory eloquent pathways prior to the onset of the classical clinical symptoms. The present study demonstrates that chronic exposure to high levels of air pollution results in AD- and PD-related pathology within the olfactory bulbs of children and relatively young adults ages 11 months to 40 years. The olfactory bulbs (OBs)

Insulin receptor participates in the peripheral olfactory processes of honey bees (Apis cerana cerana).

Insulin receptors (InR) are an integral component of the insulin/insulin-like growth factor signaling pathway, which plays a vital role in insect development, lifespan, reproduction, and olfactory sensitivity. However, whether InR participate in the peripheral olfactory system of insects remains unclear. Recently, we found that 2-heptanone (2-HT) affects AcerInR expression, the gene for an InR protein, in Apis cerana cerana. We then examined the spatiotemporal expression profile of the gene in A. cerana cerana. The mRNA of AcerInR was primarily expressed in the antennae, wings, and legs of for

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone neuronal migration.

Neurons that synthesize and secrete the decapeptide gonadotropin-releasing hormone-1 (GnRH-1) to control the reproductive axis originate in the olfactory placode/vomeronasal organ of the olfactory system of mammals and migrate along vomeronasal nerves to the cribriform plate, which marks the boundary between the peripheral olfactory system and the forebrain. Migrating GnRH-1 neurons follow a branch of the vomeronasal nerve caudally into the hypothalamus, where they extend processes to the median eminence and halt their migration. The release of GnRH-1 into the capillaries of the median eminenc

Gray matter alterations in parosmia.

Parosmia is a common olfactory disorder. In this condition, odors are perceived in a different quality than usual. This distorted olfactory percept is typically reported to be unpleasant. Little is known about the pathophysiology of this phenomenon. Previous studies demonstrated smaller volumes of the olfactory bulbs in patients with parosmia compared to subjects without parosmia. In order to investigate structural brain alterations in areas beyond the olfactory bulb, in the current study voxel-based morphometry was applied. A group of 22 parosmic patients was compared with control subjects ma

Expression pattern of Anosmin-1 during pre- and postnatal rat brain development.

Anosmin-1 participates in the development of the olfactory and GnRH systems. Defects in this protein are responsible for both the anosmia and the hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism found in Kallmann's syndrome patients. Sporadically, these patients also manifest some neurological symptoms that are not explained in terms of the developmental defects in the olfactory system. We describe the pattern of Anosmin-1 expression in the central nervous system during rat development using a novel antibody raised against Anosmin-1 (Anos1). The areas with Anos1-stained neurons and glial cells were classified i

Taste, olfactory, and food texture processing in the brain, and the control of food intake.

Complementary neurophysiological recordings in macaques and functional neuroimaging in humans show that the primary taste cortex in the rostral insula and adjoining frontal operculum provides separate and combined representations of the taste, temperature, and texture (including viscosity and fat texture) of food in the mouth independently of hunger and thus of reward value and pleasantness. One synapse on, in the orbitofrontal cortex, these sensory inputs are for some neurons combined by learning with olfactory and visual inputs. Different neurons respond to different combinations, providing

Evidence for a direct projection from the postrhinal cortex to the subiculum in the rat.

Behavioral data indicate that three of the areas which form the parahippocampal region in the rat, i.e., the entorhinal, perirhinal, and postrhinal cortices, have different, although related functions that also differ from those of the hippocampal formation. These functional differences might be related to differences in connectivity, on the one hand with parts of the association cortex, and on the other with the hippocampal formation. In a previous study, we showed the existence of both a direct and an indirect projection from the perirhinal cortex to areas CA1 and subiculum of the hippocampu
