Postoperative material of 225 orbitotomies studied in Helmholtz Research Institute of Eye Diseases for 5 years with the pathohistological diagnosis of chronic inflammation of the orbit tissues was analysed. A 27-year-old woman had a two-year history of proptosis of the right eye associated with recent onset of transient visual loss in that eye on down-gaze only. Ultrasonography and computerized tomography revealed a presumed intraconal cavernous hemangioma of the right orbit. Direct pressure on the optic nerve, with subsequent vascular compromise to the nerve and retina, was felt to be the cause of the transient visual loss. While probably not common as a cause of amaurosis fugax, orbital tumor should be considered in the differential diagnosis of gaze-evoked, transient, monocular visual loss.

Six cases of adnexal cysticercosis, (1 in the lacrimal gland, 3 orbital, and 2 palpebral) have been reported. A subperiosteal hematoma was seen in a 14-year-old boy following a blow to his head during a car accident. The involved orbit exhibited exophthalmus and inability of the eye to move above the horizontal. X-rays revealed a hairline fracture of the skull and a hemotympanum was found on the injured side. A subperiosteal hematoma of the orbital roof was suspected. Needle aspiration of the blood from the orbital hematoma resulted in an almost immediate cure of all orbital and occular problems.

A retrospective clinical and radiographic analysis of 20 patients with orbital venous malformations was performed. The malformations were fed by other veins rather than arteries. They may nearly always be demonstrated by orbital or jugular phlebography, though occasionally they will fill only following direct puncture. There appeared to be varied etiologies. A few were related to trauma or to other causes of increased intraorbital pressure. There is an association with periorbital hemangiomas suggesting developmental or congenital origin.

A 14 month old boy with sudden onset of proptosis of the left eye due to an aneurysmal bone cyst of the orbit is reported. Sequential plain films of the orbital region demonstrated changes ranging from subtle loss of bone definition of the orbital margin to the characteristic appearance of an aneurysmal bone cyst twelve months later.
