Submandibular responses to stimulation of the parasympathetic innervation in bursts in the anaesthetized ferret.

1. Submandibular salivary and vascular responses to different patterns of stimulation of the parasympathetic innervation have been investigated in anaesthetized ferrets in the presence and absence of atropine. 2. At low stimulus frequencies likely to fall within the physiological range (0.5-2.0 Hz continuously; 5.0-20.0 Hz in 1 s bursts at 10 s intervals) secretion of fluid and protein were both potentiated by the bursting pattern of stimulation and the latency of the secretory response was reduced. Over a somewhat lower range (0.5-1.0 Hz continuously; 5.0-10.0 Hz in bursts) the submandibular

Role of cholinergic mechanism in the hypoglycemic action of B. pertussis vaccine.

The present work aims to study the role of the cholinergic mechanism in the hypoglycemic action of B. pertussis vaccine in rats. The vaccine resembles insulin in that the hypoglycemia produced is mainly due to the increase conversion of glucose to glycogen in the liver and muscle. Both the hypoglycemia as well as glycogen deposition was partially blocked by atropine. On the other hand the vaccine potentiated the fall in the blood sugar and deposition of glycogen in the tissues produced by physostigmine. This suggests the possible involvement of the cholinergic system in the hypoglycemic action

[Syndromes of combined damage to the greater and lesser superficial petrosal nerves (paradoxical phenomena of hyperemia of the face, salivation, lacrimation and mucus secretion)].

Combined damage to the large and small superficial petrosal nerves is associated with paradoxical phenomena: face hyperemia, profuse salivation from the parotid gland, lacrimation and mucus secretion from the nose. Face hyperemia and salivation develop following atropine administration (an atropine salivatory paradox) while lacrimation and mucus secretion at the impaired side usually develop during eating. The above is explained by the development of ephaptic ("false") relation between the damaged nerves.

Reduction by atropine of phencyclidine hypertension and apneusis.

The aim of this study was to assess the possible role of a central cholinergic component phencyclidine (PCP)-induced hypertension. Sprague-Dawley rats, lightly anesthetized with urethane, exhibited a dose related pressor response following 0.1-1.0 mg/kg PCP i.v. After i.v. atropine pretreatment, the PCP dose-response curve was shifted to the right, and the magnitude of the pressor responses was reduced by about 50%. In addition, atropine reduced the incidence of apneusis, but had no effect on the bradycardia that accompanied the pressor responses. Methylatropine (i.v.) did not reduce the PCP p

[Effects of neurectomy of the tympanic plexus on secretion of the parotid gland in man. Histopathological, histochemical and clinical study (author's transl)].

This study involved five patients suffering from bilateral chronic parotiditis and then with a persistent unilateral fistula of the parotid gland. Two types of parotid biopsy were examined: the first taken during surgery and the second six months later. All of the specimens underwent histopathological and histochemical investigations. Definitive degeneration and atrophic type changes were seen in all the parotid fragments removed six months after selective neurectomy of the tympanic plexus. Six months after surgery, all of the patients were cured.

Isoniazid induced palmoplantar hyperhidrosis.

Secondary focal hyperhidrosis is usually due to peripheral or central neuronal defects and is a complex dysfunction of the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system. Palmoplantar hyperhidrosis has been described with various types of polyneuropathies such as diabetic but has not previously been described with isoniazid. We report a 15-year-old boy, being followed for neurotuberculosis, who presented with burning sensation and hyperhidrosis of both palms and soles five months after starting antitubercular therapy. With oral pyridoxine supplementation, the paraesthesia and hyperhidrosis red

[Vacuum-constriction therapy in association of erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation].

Choice of treatment in combination of erectile dysfunction with premature ejaculation (PE) is not a simple task because of multifactor etiology of these diseases and physiologically antagonistic stimulating domination of parasympathetic autonomic nervous system for erectile function and sympathetic one for ejaculation. Therefore, some present-day effective treatments for each of the above diseases are contraindicated in their combination. 5 patients with the above combination gave an informed consent to vacuum-constrictor therapy (VCT) with application of ErecAid Classic Osbon unit. Facial parasympathetic innervation of the rat choroid, lacrimal glands and ciliary ganglion. An ultrastructural pterygopalatine tracing and immunohistochemical study.

The pterygopalatine parasympathetic innervation of the rat choroid, lacrimal glands and ciliary ganglion was ultrastructurally studied by anterograde 3H-leucine tracing. Numerous unmyelinated fibers and vesicle-containing terminals were labeled in these structures. No direct synaptic contacts were found. In the choroid, similar terminals were immunoreactive to vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP). A regulatory feedback loop within the eye-related peripheral nervous system is endorsed by the present results. The finding of fibers and terminals of pterygopalatine origin in the lacrimal glands

Cardiovagal Tone in Generalised Anxiety Disorder: A Case Control Study.

Introduction Generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) is a prevalent psychiatric condition increasingly associated with autonomic nervous system dysfunction. Specifically, impaired cardiovagal tone, a marker of reduced parasympathetic modulation of cardiac function, has been linked to emotional dysregulation, behavioural rigidity, and elevated cardiovascular morbidity. The standard Ewing's battery of parasympathetic autonomic function tests provides a reproducible and non-invasive means of assessing such dysfunction. This study aimed to comprehensively evaluate cardiovagal tone in newly diagnosed, t

Beta-adrenergic or parasympathetic inhibition, heart rate and cardiac output during normoxic and acute hypoxic exercise in humans.

Acute hypoxia increases heart rate (HR) and cardiac output (Qt) at a given oxygen consumption (VO2) during submaximal exercise. It is widely believed that the underlying mechanism involves increased sympathetic activation and circulating catecholamines acting on cardiac beta receptors. Recent evidence indicating a continued role for parasympathetic modulation of HR during moderate exercise suggests that increased parasympathetic withdrawal plays a part in the increase in HR and Qt during hypoxic exercise. To test this, we separately blocked the beta-sympathetic and parasympathetic arms of the

Neurophysiology and pharmacology of female genital sexual response.

Vaginal sexual arousal is a vasocongestive and neuromuscular event controlled by facilitatory parasympathetic and inhibitory sympathetic inputs. Autonomic preganglionic parasympathetic and inhibitory sympathetic fibers to the vagina and clitoris originate in the spinal cord in the sacral parasympathetic nucleus at the sacral level and in the dorsal gray commissure and the intermediolateral cell column at the thoracolumbar level, respectively. Parasympathetic fibers are conveyed by the pelvic nerve, and sympathetic fibers are conveyed by the hypogastric nerve and the paravertebral sympathetic c

Repeated activation of C1 neurons in medulla oblongata decreases anti-inflammatory effect via the hypofunction of the adrenal gland adrenergic response.

The immune system is known to be controlled by the autonomic nervous system including sympathetic and parasympathetic (vagus) nerves. C1 neurons in the medulla oblongata, which participate in the control of the autonomic nervous system, are responders to stressors and regulate the immune system. Short-term activation of C1 neurons suppresses inflammation, while the effect of a long-term activation of these neurons on the inflammatory reflex is unclear. We, herein, demonstrate that the coactivation of both the splenic sympathetic nerves and the adrenal gland adrenergic response are indispensabl

Fine structure of the pinealopetal innervation of the mammalian pineal gland.

The mammalian pineal gland is innervated by peripheral sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve fibers as well as by nerve fibers originating in the central nervous system (central innervation). The perikarya of the sympathetic fibers are located in the superior cervical ganglia, while the fibers terminate in boutons containing small granular vesicles and a few large granular vesicles. Both noradrenaline and neuropeptide Y are contained in these neurons. The parasympathetic fibers originate from perikarya in the pterygopalatine ganglia. The neuropeptides, vasoactive intestinal peptide and peptide

A Temporal Reliability and Sustainability Score Framework for Ranking Heart Rate Variability Metrics During Pharmacological Autonomic Blockade in Rats.

BACKGROUND: While Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is a cornerstone of non-invasive autonomic assessment, the sensitivity and sustainability of specific HRV parameters remain debated. This study introduces a "sustainability score" to systematically validate which metrics best reflect autonomic nervous system (ANS) modulation following pharmacological blockade. METHODS: Ten male Sprague-Dawley rats were implanted with ECG electrodes. After recovery, rats underwent randomized atropine (1 mg/kg, intraperitoneal) and propranolol (10 mg/kg, intraperitoneal) sessions separated by at least 3 days. Basel

nVNS sham significantly affects the trigeminal-autonomic reflex: A randomized controlled study.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether high placebo effects observed in recently published clinical noninvasive vagal nerve stimulation (nVNS) trials can be attributed to an active modulation of the trigeminal-autonomic reflex by the sham device. METHODS: Twenty-eight healthy participants were investigated in a randomized, controlled, single-blind, within-participant design. The 4 different conditions of no stimulation, regular nVNS of the left cervical vagal nerve, stimulation of the posterior neck with the same device (sham I), and stimulation of the left cervical vagal nerve with a sham device (s

Sympathetic and parasympathetic regulation of rectal motility in rats.

INTRODUCTION: The colon and rectum are regulated by the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Abnormalities of the ANS are associated with diseases of the colon and rectum while its modulation is a putative mechanism for sacral nerve stimulation. The purpose of this study is to establish a rat model elucidating the role of the efferent ANS on rectal motility. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Rectal motility following transection or stimulation of parasympathetic pelvic nerves (PN) or sympathetic hypogastric nerves (HGN) was measured with rectal strain gauge transducers and quantified as a motility index (MI)

Influence of the posterior hypothalamus on the visual cortex in various states of the reticular formation.

It has been demonstrated in chronic experiments on wakeful rabbits that the stimulation of the posterior hypothalamus by a single electrical stimulus leads to the formation in the visual cortex of a short-latency response which exerts a substantial influence on the formation of the reaction to light stimulation. Depending upon the intervals between the hypothalamic and light stimuli, an initial suppression of the response is observed (1-15 msec), a subsequent selective facilitation of its positive component in the presence of the simultaneous suppression of the negative (20-100 msec), and the
