Descemet's membrane endothelial keratoplasty for acute corneal hydrops: a case report.

Here, we describe the result of a Descemet's membrane endothelial keratoplasty for acute corneal hydrops in a 45-year-old female with keratoconus, who presented with severe visual loss in her OS. The patient's best-corrected visual acuity was 20/80 in the right eye and hand motion in the OS. Slit-lamp examination revealed an extensive tear of the Descemet's membrane and stromal corneal edema in the OS. We opted for Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty. Twelve months postoperatively, the patient had a best-corrected visual acuity of 20/50 in the OS.

Central retinal vein occlusion in a patient on hemodialysis secondary to antiphospholipid syndrome: Case report.

Central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) is one of the most common retinal vascular disease. Macular edema associated is responsible of the major decrease in visual acuity. The main causes often implicated are high blood pressure and diabetes. Other etiologies should be sought including CRVO secondary to antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). This rare etiology is associated with a poor prognosis when late diagnosed. Owing to the high associated mortality, early diagnosis and prompt treatment are necessary. We describe a case of APS complicated by a catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome in a patient w

[Enlarged blind spot and reduced visual evoked potentials due to melanocytoma of the optic disc].

A 59-year-old male patient presented with clinical characteristics of a melanocytoma of the optic disc in the right eye. Using functional tests, such as visual acuity, visual fields, visual evoked potentials (VEP) and imaging procedures (e.g., fundus photography and spectral domain optical coherence tomography) the findings were documented. Best corrected visual acuity was 25/20 in both eyes. Ophthalmoscopy showed a slightly prominent and pigmented tumor in the upper third of the optic disc. Comparing both eyes, an enlarged blind spot and a reduction of VEP were detectable.

PresbyLASIK approach for the correction of presbyopia.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this review is to offer a comprehensive overview of the different PresbyLASIK approaches, which have been published in peer-reviewed journals. RECENT FINDINGS: Comprehensive search was conducted in scopus using keywords presbyLASIK, presbyopia, LASIK, corneal multifocality. We reviewed binocular uncorrected and corrected distance and near visual acuity, and loss of lines of best corrected visual acuity, for presbyopic patients among three different basic treatment modalities. SUMMARY: Additional trials and standards for reporting results for presbyopic approache

[Spontaneous resolution of macular detachment associated with optic disc coloboma].

CASE REPORT: A 24-year-old male presented with visual acuity loss of the right eye. Examination of the right eye fundus showed a serous detachment of the posterior pole associated with optic disc coloboma. The patient refused surgical treatment. After six months an improvement in visual acuity was observed with the disappearance of macular subretinal fluid. DISCUSSION: The macular detachment is a known complication of the optic disc coloboma. Different therapeutic options have been used, although spontaneous re-attachment may also occur as shown in this case.

[Spontaneous closure of traumatic macular holes. Two cases].

The optimal treatment approach for traumatic macular holes (TMH) is still controversial. We report two cases of spontaneous closure of TMH. In the first patient, closure resulted in an increase in visual acuity from 0.2 to 0.8. In the second case, no increase in visual acuity was detectable despite spontaneous closure of the TMH within a few days after the trauma. This may be explained by an irreversible damage of the photoreceptors and retinal pigment epithelium. In patients with TMH, a waiting approach should be considered because of the possibility of spontaneous closure of TMHs.

Optic disc pallor: a false localizing sign.

A 20-year-old pregnant woman was referred with bilateral mild visual acuity loss and optic disc pallor. Because of profound color vision deficits out of proportion to her acuity loss, an abnormality of the cone photoreceptors was suspected. An electroretinogram confirmed the diagnosis of a cone dystrophy and precluded further costly and invasive testing. Cone dystrophy should be considered in the differential diagnosis of any patient with bilateral, nonrefractive visual loss, especially if color vision is disproportionately affected, even with a normal retinal appearance and no significant fam

Pupil dilatation with tropicamide. The effects on acuity, accommodation and refraction.

The effect of pupil dilatation with tropicamide 1% on visual acuity and accommodation was assessed in 100 eyes of 52 consecutive patients attending the general ophthalmic outpatient clinic. Snellen visual acuity remained unchanged in 55 eyes and deteriorated by one line in 41 eyes. The remaining four eyes deteriorated by two lines. Tropicamide gave rise to a reduction in the amplitude of accommodation which tended to vary inversely with the age of the patient. However, all patients who wore reading glasses for presbyopia were still able to read when their pupils had been dilated.

Results of vitreous surgery for posterior complications of chronic uveitis.

To determine surgical results and predictive factors of final visual acuity, a total of 30 eyes in 30 uveitis patients who underwent vitreous surgery including pars plana vitrectomy were followed for at least 6 months and various preoperative factors and postoperative results were analyzed. Our surgical indications were vitreous opacity, traction retinal detachment, combined rhegmatogenous-traction detachment. Preoperatively detached retina was finally reattached in 15 (83.3%) of 18 eyes. Final visual acuity improved in 19 (63.3%) of 30 eyes, but decreased in 3 eyes compared with the initial a

Visual rehabilitation after LASIK complication: flap amputation, topo-guided surgery, and phacoemulsification.

We present a case of a patient complaining of monocular diplopia due to a decentered ablation after LASIK. The patient underwent a wavefront-guided retreatment, which resulted in an epithelial ingrowth complication. Additionally, the patient developed cataract, with cataract surgery requiring reliable biometric measurements. Therefore, we opted for corneal treatment and corneal surface regularization. Although we attempted to lift the flap and wash the interface initially, the procedure proved unsuccessful, thereby necessitating immediate flap amputation. Once the corneal surface was regulariz

Optic neuritis caused by varicella infection in an immunocompetent child.

Chickenpox may lead to several neurologic complications, but optic neuritis has rarely been described. We report on a 6-year-old immunocompetent patient who presented with unilateral optic neuritis and severe visual loss because of varicella infection. A week after varicella eruption, the child experienced blurred vision. An examination revealed decreased visual acuity of his right eye, a right pupil poorly reactive to light, and almost no color vision in his right eye. A history of chickenpox, the fundus examination, and the measurement of visual-evoked potentials allowed us to make a diagnos
