Dissociation of local and global processing in visual agnosia.

Subsequent to strokes in the right and left inferomedial occipito-temporal lobes, two patients became prosopagnosic and alexic, respectively. They also show a complementary dissociation of the analysis of handwritten text. The patient with the right posterior stroke can read it but not recognize whose handwriting it is; the patient with the left posterior stroke cannot read the text but knows who wrote it. The analysis of spatial vision revealed that the prosopagnosic patient has no problem with seeing texture elements when presented in isolation. Yet she performs poorly with Moiré and texture

Mental imagery and dyslexia: a deficit in processing multipart visual objects?

Dyslexic and normal control subjects memorized simple line patterns inside a grid and subsequently judged whether an "X" would have fallen on the pattern had it been present in an empty grid. The patterns were letters and novel shapes. The grids were presented to the left visual field, to the right visual field, or in central vision. Dyslexic subjects had difficulty generating images of multipart patterns, but this deficit was limited to letters. The findings suggest that dyslexics may have selective difficulty integrating visual information stored in long-term memory.

A limitation of position constancy.

When the eyes track a moving object, the image of a stationary target shifts on the retina colinearly with the eye movement. A compensation process called position constancy prevents this image shift from causing perceived target motion commensurate with the image shift. The target either appears stationary or seems to move in the direction opposite to the eye movement, but much less than the image shift would warrant. Our work is concerned with the question of whether position constancy operates when the image shift and the eye movement are not colinear. That can occur when, during the eye mo

Dysgraphia for letters: a form of motor memory deficit?

A case of pure dysgraphia is presented in which the patient could accurately copy letters which she could not write. The patient did not show any evidence of significant reading or speech impairment or any buccofacial or limb apraxia. Both oral and "block spelling" performance were intact. The writing impairment, which was bilateral, appeared to consist of a memory difficulty for the motor movements associated with letters. The dysgraphia was shown to be specific to letters as the patient was able to transcribe certain numbers and patterns which were similar to letters in their visuospatial co

Visual evoked potentials and the visuogram in multiple sclerosis.

Visual evoked potential (VEP) latency to a sinusoidal grating pattern was measured in each eye of 103 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and compared with results in a control group of 56 patients hospitalized for other neurological conditions. Of the 50 patients classified as having definite MS, 90% showed prolonged latency (over 131 msec) in one or both eyes. In each eye of 24 of the MS patients, psychophysical measurement of the detectability of grating patterns was obtained. This test was abnormal in 11 of 13 patients with definite MS, 3 of 4 with probable MS, and 5 of 7 with possible M

Impact of crowding on visual appearance and performance in amblyopia.

Individuals with amblyopia have been reported to perceive stimuli as distorted with the amblyopic eye, and to have stronger foveal crowding than controls without amblyopia. Previous studies on visual appearance in amblyopia often lacked a control group and did not adjust stimulus size to account for visual acuity deficits. Here, we investigated whether observers with amblyopia perceived stimuli as more distorted and whether foveal crowding influenced visual appearance more strongly than in controls, while controlling for visual acuity differences. Isolated and flanked target letters were prese

Typical visual-field locations enhance processing in object-selective channels of human occipital cortex.

Natural environments consist of multiple objects, many of which repeatedly occupy similar locations within a scene. For example, hats are seen on people's heads, while shoes are most often seen close to the ground. Such positional regularities bias the distribution of objects across the visual field: hats are more often encountered in the upper visual field, while shoes are more often encountered in the lower visual field. Here we tested the hypothesis that typical visual field locations of objects facilitate cortical processing. We recorded functional MRI while participants viewed images of o

A practical approach to albino diagnosis. VEP misrouting across the age span.

In addition to the genetic heterogeneity in albinism, widespread clinical heterogeneity frequently impedes albino detection and differential diagnosis. Further, several auxiliary ocular and/or cutaneous manifestations of this inherited error of pigmentary metabolism are neither pre-requisite nor specific to the albino condition. However, one feature that is specific to albinism regardless of genotype or phenotype is a unique pattern of abnormal visual pathway organization. With an appropriate test paradigm, the albino visual pathway can be revealed by the non-invasive recording of the visual e

Relations between visual acuity, refraction and the pattern reversal visual-evoked cortical potential in aphakia.

The investigations included 20 aphakic patients. Relations were established between visual acuity, refraction and the pattern reversal visual-evoked cortical potentials (PRVECP). Close correlations were found between the three values. The optimum correction for obtaining best visual acuity, the skiascopic value, and the correction value for obtaining the largest PRVECP amplitude at minimum peak time differ by an average of 0.5 dptr.

Top-down constraint on recognition memory.

Can recognition memory be constrained "at the front end," such that people are more likely to retrieve information about studying a recognition-test probe from a specified target source than they are to retrieve such information about a probe from a nontarget source? We adapted a procedure developed by Jacoby, Shimizu, Daniels, and Rhodes (Psychonomic bulletin & review 12:852-857, 2005) to address this question. Experiment 1 yielded evidence of source-constrained retrieval, but that pattern was not significant in Experiments 2, 3, and 4 (nor in several unpublished pilot experiments). In experi

Analysis of object motion in the ventral part of the medial superior temporal area of the macaque visual cortex.

1. The medial superior temporal area (MST) is an extrastriate area of the macaque visual cortex. Cells in MST have large receptive fields and respond to moving stimuli with directional selectivity. We previously suggested that the dorsal part of MST is mainly involved in analysis of field motion caused by movements of the animal itself, because most cells in the dorsal part preferentially responded to movements of a wide textured field rather than to movements of a small stimulus. To determine whether the remaining ventral part of MST differs in function from the dorsal part, we examined prope

Perception and action in 'visual form agnosia'.

A single case study of a patient with 'visual form agnosia' is presented. A severe visual recognition deficit was accompanied by impairments in discriminating shape, reflectance, and orientation, although visual acuity and colour vision, along with tactile recognition and intelligence, were largely preserved. Neuropsychological and behavioural investigations have indicated that the patient is able to utilize visual pattern information surprisingly well for the control of hand movements during reaching, and can even read many whole words, despite being unable to make simple discriminative judge

Double-opponent-process mechanism underlying RF-structure of directionally specific cells of cat lateral suprasylvian visual area.

For the experiments reported in this study, recordings were obtained from 246 single units in the middle lateral suprasylvian visual area (LS) of 13 cats. 49 of these cells were subjected to detailed quantitative analysis. The receptive field (RF) organization was examined for directionally specific cells by presenting moving single spots on large moving random dot backgrounds. A cell's response to an optimal spot (in terms of size, direction, velocity) moving on a stationary background inside the excitatory RF (ERF) was compared to in-phase (same direction, same velocity) and anti-phase (oppo

Fixation-related potentials during a virtual navigation task: The influence of image statistics on early cortical processing.

Historically, electrophysiological correlates of scene processing have been studied with experiments using static stimuli presented for discrete timescales where participants maintain a fixed eye position. Gaps remain in generalizing these findings to real-world conditions where eye movements are made to select new visual information and where the environment remains stable but changes with our position and orientation in space, driving dynamic visual stimulation. Co-recording of eye movements and electroencephalography (EEG) is an approach to leverage fixations as time-locking events in the E

Contours drive distinct orientation selectivity in the human visual system.

Orientation processing is central to visual perception, yet the contributions of different image features in natural scene orientation processing remain unresolved. Here, we present converging behavioral and neural evidence that human orientation judgments in real-world scenes depend more strongly on contours delineating object structure than on orientation energy from filter-based computations. In Study 1, participants judged the average orientation of image patches chosen to maximize the discrepancy between contour-based and filter-based orientation estimates. Judgments consistently matched

Distorted optical input affects human perception.

Collinear facilitation, the mechanism for grouping contour elements, is a process involving lateral interactions that improve the detectability of a target by the presence of collinear flankers. It was shown that the development of collinear facilitation is experience dependent and that it may be impaired when the visual input is distorted in one meridian (meridional amblyopia). In oblique astigmatism, the blurring is on the opposite oblique meridian in both eyes, resulting in two conflicting images, which may affect the development of binocular vision. We hypothesized that the collinear facil

Frequency of alpha oscillation predicts individual differences in perceptual stability during binocular rivalry.

When ambiguous visual stimuli have multiple interpretations, human perception can alternate between them, producing perceptual multistability. There is a large variation between individuals in how long stable percepts endure, on average, between switches, but the underlying neural basis of this individual difference in perceptual dynamics remains obscure. Here, we show that in one widely studied multistable paradigm-binocular rivalry-perceptual stability in individuals is predicted by the frequency of their neural oscillations within the alpha range (7-13 Hz). Our results suggest revising mode

Action-associated modulation of visual event-related potentials evoked by abstract and ecological stimuli.

This study investigated the influence of action-associated predictive processes on visual ERPs. In two experiments, we sought evidence for sensory attenuation (SA) indexed by ERP amplitude reductions for self-induced stimuli when compared to passive viewing of the same images. We assessed if SA is (a) present for both ecological and abstract stimuli (pictures depicting hands or checkerboards), (b) modulated by the degree of stimulus predictability (certain or uncertain action-effect contingencies), and (c) sensitive to laterality of hand movements (dominant or subdominant hand actions). We fou

Visual texture agnosia in dementia with Lewy bodies and Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Neuroimaging and some clinical studies have reported that the ventral visual pathway is relevant for visual texture recognition. Although a variety of visual deficits have been reported in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), visual material identification and texture recognition have not been thoroughly examined. OBJECTIVES: To investigate visual texture recognition in patients with AD and DLB and to clarify the relationship between visual texture recognition and various visuoperceptual functions. METHODS: Twenty-five patients with probable

Recurrent Processing in the Formation of Shape Percepts.

UNLABELLED: The human visual system must extract reliable object information from cluttered visual scenes several times per second, and this temporal constraint has been taken as evidence that the underlying cortical processing must be strictly feedforward. Here we use a novel rapid reinforcement paradigm to probe the temporal dynamics of the neural circuit underlying rapid object shape perception and thus test this feedforward assumption. Our results show that two shape stimuli are optimally reinforcing when separated in time by ∼60 ms, suggesting an underlying recurrent circuit with a time c
