The role of social support on change in C-reactive Protein and BMI among youth with and without child maltreatment history.

Child maltreatment (CM) has long-term consequences for metabolic and inflammatory processes, but it is unclear when these associations emerge and whether other psychosocial resources (e.g., social support), can moderate these associations. This study examined (1) the extent to which a history of CM investigation was associated with changes in youth high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and body mass index (BMI) across a two-year period, and (2) the moderating role of social support from different sources (caregivers, siblings, and peers) on this association. Participants included 318 yo

Longitudinal impact of impulsivity and sensation-seeking on vaping initiation: The moderating role of peer vaping.

Limited research indicates impulsivity and sensation-seeking are associated with electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) use in young adulthood, however, no study has examined the moderating effect of peer ENDS use on these associations. We examined the impacts of impulsivity and sensation-seeking on ENDS use initiation and determined if peer ENDS use moderates these associations. Participants were 2,590 ENDS naïve (i.e., never used ENDS) young adults involved in multi-wave, 4.5-year longitudinal study (Fall, 2014 - Spring, 2019). At baseline, participants were 18-25 years old (M = 20.1; S

A Peer Support Specialist-Delivered Sexual and Intimate Partner Violence Prevention Program for Women in Substance Use Treatment: Protocol for a Single-Arm Trial.

BACKGROUND: Women in substance use treatment are disproportionately affected by violence. Both a history of violence and substance use place women at risk for cumulative exposure to violence and adverse outcomes, including mental and physical health problems. Interventions are urgently needed to reduce these health disparities by preventing initial and repeated exposure to sexual and intimate partner violence among women with substance use disorders (SUDs). The Healthy Relationships and Interpersonal Violence Education (THRIVE) program adapts evidence-based strategies for this population and i

Peer-Led Digital Health Lifestyle Intervention in a Low-Income Community at Risk for Cardiovascular Disease (MYCardio-PEER): Mixed Methods Development and Process Evaluation Study.

BACKGROUND: Low-income populations in Malaysia face significant barriers to cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention, including limited access to health information, preventive services, and ongoing support for behavior change. Digital health technologies present scalable opportunities for promoting heart-healthy behaviors, especially when integrated with community-based peer support. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the development and process evaluation of MYCardio-PEER (Peer-led digital health lifestyle intervention for CVD prevention in a low-income Malaysian community), designed to

The Wrong Stuff: Characteristics of Youth Involved in Mutual Antipathy Peer Relationships.

Mutual antipathies are characterized by reciprocated disliking. The current study identifies behavioral attributes that forecast participation in mutual antipathies. Participants were 313 (170 girls, 143 boys) Florida public school students (9-14 years old; Mage = 11.09, SDage = 0.90) who thrice nominated disliked classmates during a single school year (approximately 6.5 weeks apart). Behavioral attributes assayed in the fall semester identified those currently involved in mutual antipathies (N = 101 dyads) and those prospectively involved in new mutual antipathies (N = 124 dyads). Youth invol

A mixed methods process evaluation of the implementation of a peer coaching intervention to improve the execution of preventive tasks by occupational physicians.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the process of implementation of a peer coaching intervention program for occupational physicians (OPs) to improve the execution of preventive tasks. Specifically, the evaluation seeks to: (1) describe the reach and uptake of the intervention program; (2) determine the extent to which the program was implemented as intended; (3) provide insights into experiences of OPs, and (4) identify factors influencing the implementation. METHODS: This study employed a mixed-methods design. To address the four research aims, seven process indicators were used: acce

Descriptive norms for simultaneous cannabis and alcohol use predict simultaneous use patterns assessed via daily surveys.

OBJECTIVE: Simultaneous cannabis and alcohol use is common, but few studies have examined normative perceptions of simultaneous use. This study examined unique associations of baseline descriptive norms for simultaneous use (i.e., perceptions about others' simultaneous use) with simultaneous use behaviors assessed via daily surveys. METHOD: Young adults reporting frequent simultaneous use (N = 150) completed baseline measures of descriptive norms for the frequency of simultaneous use and the amounts of cannabis and alcohol consumed during typical simultaneous use occasions. Further, participa

Experiences of Peer Mentoring Sexual and Gender Minority Emerging Adults Who Are at Risk for Suicide: Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Sexual and Gender Diverse Youth (SGDY) are at increased risk for suicide due to unique experiences including discrimination, family or friend rejection, and low positive affect. Peer mentors (PMs) may offer a unique opportunity for intervention but are underutilized for suicide prevention among SGDY. OBJECTIVE: Little is known about the training needed for PMs when working with SGDY at risk for suicide. We developed an intervention, Supporting Transitions to Adulthood and Reducing Suicide (STARS), to improve suicide prevention among SGDY and increase social support, coping, and po

Gender Performativity Norms and Friendship Networking Processes: An Epidemiological Perspective From a Longitudinal Cohort of Adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescence is a stage of development in which sensitivity to social norms and peer influences becomes more pronounced, and individuals are expected to conform to social group identities and adopt the normative behaviors of their peers, including gender role norms. However, little is known about the reciprocal effects between gender performativity and the friendship networking process in Taiwanese adolescents. Therefore, this study aimed to adopt a social network analysis to study the relationship mentioned above using a representative cohort study. METHODS: Empirical data were

A Longitudinal Study of Multidimensional Prosocial Behavior During Adolescence.

This study examines the distinct developmental trajectories of prosocial and rebellious behaviors in adolescence. Using data from an accelerated three-wave project (2018-2022) among adolescents aged 9-22 years (N = 142, 63% female, middle-high SES, white European descent), trajectories of prosocial actions toward friends and peers, prosocial tendencies across multiple situations, giving to charities, and general social value orientation were examined. By examining age-, puberty-, and hormonal-related trajectories, the study demonstrates increases in prosocial behaviors to friends and peers, di

From obligation-dominant to guilt-dominant: the asymmetrical development of indebtedness in Chinese mid-childhood children.

Upon receiving favors, adults can experience not only gratitude but also the negative feeling of indebtedness. Indebtedness is comprised of the guilt for burdening others and the sense of obligation to repay, which are derived from the appraisals about the benefactor's communal- and exchange-oriented intentions and in turn reinforce corresponding relationships with the benefactor. Yet, from the perspective of ontogeny, how the two components of indebtedness develop and how these developments contribute to children's social functions (e.g., peer relationship preferences) remain unclear. Here, w

The influence of peer relationship on preschoolers' merit-based resource allocation in first-party and third-party contexts.

PURPOSE: Merit is a functional principle of distributive justice, and even young children take merit-based cues into consideration. Fairness requires an objective assessment of merit, but objectivity is often impaired by peer relationship. This study examined how preschool children incorporate recipients' peer relationship in allocating resources based on merit, in both first-party (Study 1) and third-party (Study 2) contexts. METHODS: A total of 240 children, aged 3 to 7, participated in the study. In Study 1, 120 children acquired resources through collaboration with either a stranger or a

The Bidirectional Mediation Roles of Depression and Hostile Attribution Bias in the Relationship between Peer Conflict and Adolescents' Cyberbullying Perpetration: A Two-Wave Study.

Previous research has established that the quality of peer relationships significantly impacts adolescents' physical and mental health. However, the relationship between peer conflict and cyberbullying perpetration remains insufficiently explored. Based on the General Aggression Model and the General Strain Theory, this study investigates the mediating role of depression and hostile attribution bias in the relationship between peer conflict and cyberbullying perpetration, as well as the moderating role of gender, aiming to offer a new perspective on understanding adolescent cyberbullying perpe

Genetic education and peer support among Ashkenazi Jewish women in the United States at risk for and surviving with breast cancer.

Ashkenazi Jewish women are at significantly increased risk for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) due to the high prevalence of BRCA founder variants. Community-based organizations (CBOs) offer culturally tailored support through programs like peer support and genetic education, but limited research has explored how these services are offered and utilized in this population. Therefore, we conducted a secondary analysis of post-program survey data from N = 1054 women served by a national cancer support organization. Among high-risk Ashkenazi Jewish women (N = 429), we examined patterns

Social and Environmental Predictors of Youth Alcohol and Cannabis Initiation Risk: The Moderating Role of Family History of Substance Use Disorders.

BACKGROUND: The social and local-home environment impacts youth's likelihood of early substance use initiation (SUI). Yet, it is unknown whether protective or risk factors are salient for all forms of youth SUI, or may be specific to certain substances (e.g., alcohol, cannabis). Additionally, certain family factors - such as having a family history of SUD (FH+)-may exacerbate risk for and mitigate protection from alcohol (AUI) and cannabis (CUI) use initiation. OBJECTIVES: Using a longitudinal cohort of 387 adolescents, we aimed to understand how the link between social and local-home factors

Supporting Older, Frail, and Vulnerable Adult Prisoners Through Peer Care: Observations, Reflections, and Recommendations Based on a UK/U.S. Researcher Exchange Visit.

This article describes key findings from a UK/U.S. prison health researcher exchange in September 2023. The aims were to increase familiarity with the research context and to observe the roles of peer caregivers in U.S. prison settings. The researchers identified several differences and similarities in peer caregiving between UK and U.S. sites and detail six recommendations related to policy and practice concerning both sides of the Atlantic. It is believed that the adoption of such recommendations will contribute to improved care and, thereby, the health and well-being of vulnerable people in

The influence of friendships on the mental health of maltreated youth: A pre-registered systematic review using a developmental psychopathology perspective.

Friendships are a potential factor that influence maltreated children's risk for psychopathology. This systematic review examined (1) how friendships influence the association between child maltreatment and psychopathology and (2) developmental differences in how friendships influence this association. Four databases were searched. Inclusion criteria were primary study, quantitative, measures of maltreatment and friendship up to the age of 18 years, measures of psychopathology up to the age of 24 years, and a non-maltreated sample. Exclusion criteria were qualitative, reviews or meta-analyses,

Bystander Motivations and Barriers to Helping Intoxicated Peers.

We examined the prevalence of self-reported motivations and barriers to helping intoxicated peers among emerging adults (N = 377; Mage = 18.64; 75% women, 88% White) attending a Southeastern university and whether motivations and barriers differed by age, gender, race, and class standing. Respondents aged 19-24 were more likely to endorse the motivation item "Because it was your "turn" to be the helper/designated driver (DD) that night" than eighteen-year-olds. Race differences were also reported for the motivation item, "Because the person was your friend", where White participants were more
