Convergence and divergence of mental health symptoms among adolescents and their friends.

Peers play a central role in shaping adolescent mental health, with internalising and externalising symptoms often clustering within friendship groups. In this study we examined whether adolescents' internalising and externalising symptoms converged, or diverged, with their best friend(s) symptoms over time, and whether gender and experiences of victimisation influenced these patterns. We conducted secondary data analysis of the Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Survey in Four European Countries (CILS4EU), using two waves collected in Sweden and Germany, comprising a total of 5705 participan

Impact of children's language ability on self-report assessment of mental health: Testing measurement invariance using moderated non-linear factor analysis.

Children with language difficulties are at elevated risk of mental health problems, yet tools commonly used to assess mental health rely heavily on language. It is unclear if children's language ability influences their self-report measures. We tested language-related measurement invariance using moderated non-linear factor analyses. We used self-report data from children (10-11 years) with a wide range of language abilities, living in the UK, on the Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scale-25 (RCADS-25; n = 342; 171 female; 80 with language difficulties) and the Strengths and Difficulties Q

Targeting childhood loneliness in china: in silico interventions and moderated network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Childhood loneliness is a significant public health concern, particularly in China due to distinct sociocultural contexts. Prior research often overlooks symptom-level interactions, limiting the precision of targeted interventions. This study applied network-based methodologies to clarify the structure of loneliness, identify intervention targets, and examine the roles of psychological factors and family socioeconomic status (SES). METHODS: A total of 2,593 school-age children from Shantou, China, were assessed for loneliness, depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, ADHD symptoms,

Comparison of Cardiorespiratory Fitness between Patients with Mitral Valve Prolapse and Healthy Peers: Findings from Serial Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing.

Individuals with mitral valve prolapse (MVP) have exercise intolerance even without mitral valve regurgitation. Mitral valve degeneration may progress with aging. We aimed to evaluate the influence of MVP on the cardiopulmonary function (CPF) of individuals with MVP through serial follow-ups from early to late adolescence. Thirty patients with MVP receiving at least two cardiopulmonary exercise tests (CPETs) using a treadmill (MVP group) were retrospectively analyzed. Age-, sex-, and body mass index-matched healthy peers, who also had serial CPETs, were recruited as the control group. The aver

The Relationship Between Violence Syndemics and Sexual Risk Behaviors Among African American Adolescents: Implications for Future Research.

PURPOSE: We present a conceptual framework based on a review of the literature to highlight the interconnecting and reinforcing elements of a violence syndemic and how this syndemic influences sexual risk behaviors among African American heterosexual adolescents. METHODS: We review existing peer-reviewed published research from 2000 to 2020 that links a violence syndemic (i.e., racism and race-related stress, neighborhood and police violence, peer violence, and family violence and disruptions) to adolescent sexual risk behaviors. Empirical findings and theoretical underpinnings are used to do

Siblings as buffers: Social problems and internalizing and externalizing behaviors across early adolescence.

Youth who struggle to maintain positive peer relationships are more likely to display emotional and behavioral problems, particularly during adolescence. Alternative avenues of social support may buffer against these maladaptive outcomes, particularly sibling relations, as they oftentimes predict adolescent outcomes above and beyond that of parents and peers. The present study examined the role of objective sibling warmth on the longitudinal association between social problems and maladjustment in a sample of 45 adolescent sibling dyads, further testing how effects varied between younger (Mage

Carious lesions of permanent molars and oral health practices of parents and peers in Saudi male adolescents.

To assess the association between carious lesions in first and second permanent molars in adolescents and their parents' and peers' oral health practices. Methods: This cross-sectional study of 12-15 year-old male adolescents was conducted in  Dammam, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, on February 2016. Data collection included dental examination to measure carious lesions and plaque. There was a questionnaire to assess oral health practices such as brushing with fluoridated toothpaste, current daily tobacco use, and daily consumption of sugary food and drinks. Logistic regression models assessed the as

Short-Term Intervention Effects of the PATHS Curriculum in Young Low-Income Children: Capitalizing on Plasticity.

Deficits in behavioral and cognitive regulation are prevalent in children reared in poverty relative to more affluent children due to the effects of adverse conditions on the developmental underpinnings of these skills. Despite evidence to suggest that these emergent processes are susceptible to environmental inputs, research documenting short-term intervention program influences on these regulatory domains in young impoverished children is limited. We sought to determine the proximal effects of a universal school-based intervention (the PATHS Curriculum) on social, emotional, relational, and

A comparison of health-related quality of life in 5- and 10-year-old Swedish children with and without cleft lip and/or palate.

BACKGROUND: The current understanding on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in young Swedish children with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) is sparse, and therefore, research on impact of CL/P on HRQoL in children is needed. AIMS: To investigate HRQoL in 5- and 10-year-old Swedish children with CL/P in comparison with non-cleft controls. Also to analyse whether there were any differences in HRQoL between children with cleft lip (with or without cleft palate, CL ± P) and cleft palate only (CP) and/or gender differences. DESIGN: A total of 137 children with CL/P and 305 non-cleft controls pa

Qualitative analysis of social network influences on quitting smoking among individuals with serious mental illness.

Objective: The prevalence of cigarette smoking among adults with serious mental illness (SMI) remains high in the United States despite the availability of effective smoking cessation treatment. Identifying social influences on smoking and smoking cessation may help enhance intervention strategies to help smokers with SMI quit. The objective of this qualitative study was to explore social network influences on efforts to quit smoking among adults with SMI enrolled in a cessation treatment program. Methods: Participants were 41 individuals with SMI enrolled in a Medicaid Demonstration Project o

The Biomechanical Landscape of Lumbar Disc Herniation: Mechanobiological Insights Into Injury and Regeneration.

ObjectiveLumbar disc herniation is among the most common and disabling spinal disorders, driven by the interplay of mechanical overload, structural failure, and cellular dysfunction. Despite advances in surgical interventions, achieving true biological repair of herniated discs remains a major clinical challenge. This review aims to critically examine the biomechanical landscape of disc herniation, focusing on how altered load transmission, tissue stiffness, and structural disruption influence cellular behavior and tissue regeneration. It further explores mechanobiological mechanisms governing

Partner support, communication and family planning choices among Nigerian women: a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Partner involvement plays a critical role in shaping women's contraceptive choices, yet evidence on its influence remains limited in Nigeria, where contraceptive prevalence is low. This study explored how partner support and communication affect women's family planning decisions. METHODS: A descriptive phenomenological qualitative study was conducted over 6 weeks at the family planning clinic of a tertiary healthcare facility in southwest Nigeria, using in-depth interviews, with data analysed through inductive thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke's six-step framework. Turning the envious boss into a friend or a foe: The emotional and behavioral reactions to being envied by one's supervisor and its impact on leader-member exchange.

In recent years, research on workplace envy has expanded beyond its traditional focus on peer-to-peer envy to examine the envy felt by supervisors toward their subordinates (termed as "downward envy"). We contribute to this emerging research stream by examining the emotional and behavioral reactions of employees who are targets of such downward envy, as well as the relational consequences that follow. We tested our model, which is based on the appraisal theory of emotions, across two studies-a multisource, multiphase field study and a vignette-based experimental study-that offer converging evi

Maltese readers with Down syndrome: Cognitive and linguistic factors in reading performance.

PURPOSE: This study examined the word and nonword reading abilities of Maltese participants with Down syndrome and explored how cognitive-linguistic skills and orthographic depth influence decoding performance. We hypothesised that word reading would exceed nonword reading in participants with Down syndrome, with a larger discrepancy in English given its deeper orthography. METHOD: A comparative cross-sectional design was used. Fifteen participants with Down sydnrome and 19 typically developing peers, matched on fluid intelligence, completed word and nonword reading assessments in either Malt

Social Contexts Requiring Adjudication Self- and Peer-Interest Differentially Alter Risk Preferences Across Adolescence.

Adolescence is a period of escalated rates of risk taking and a dynamic social landscape with peers taking on an important role in shaping one's decisions. Choosing to engage in risk rarely impacts only the decision maker, but also those around them. With a cohort of typically developing adolescent and young adult friend dyads (N = 128, 11-22 years), the current study investigates how peer-relevant social contexts influence risk preferences at different ages using a computational decision making task. We adapted a computational expected utility model to account for weighing the friend's outcom

Effects of a Sequential Community-Based Multi Component HIV Intervention on Sexual Behavior, Drug Use and Syringe Sharing for People Who Inject Drugs on the US-Mexico Border: A Quasi-Experimental Study.

People who inject drugs (PWID) are disproportionately impacted by HIV. To end the HIV epidemic, it is necessary to implement interventions that mitigate the risk of HIV transmission among priority populations. We implemented and tested a community-based intervention for PWID informed by a community based participatory approach in two sister cities on the US-Mexico border. The intervention consisted of three components implemented sequentially: social network HIV testing, peer network psychoeducational and skill building intervention, and community wide events to reduce HIV stigma. Using a quas
