Global burden of depression and anxiety among women of reproductive age: socioeconomic disparities and policy implications.

BACKGROUND: Depression and anxiety are a major contributor to the global burden of mental disorders, disproportionately affecting women of reproductive age (15-49 years). AIMS: This study examined the global trends for depression and anxiety in women of reproductive age, allowing for the variation in social development, profiles of risk factors, and public policies. METHODS: We analyzed Global Burden of Disease Study (1990-2021) data, estimating age-standardized rates (ASRs) and applying age-period-cohort (APC) analysis to assess trends in depressive and anxiety disorders by sociodemographic

Randomized controlled trial of propranolol on social communication and anxiety in children and young adults with autism spectrum disorder.

RATIONALE: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by impaired social communication and is also frequently characterized by co-occurring anxiety. Propranolol is widely utilized to treat performance and public speaking anxiety. Single-dose psychopharmacological challenge studies suggested benefits using propranolol for verbal tasks and social interaction. OBJECTIVE: We conducted a double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial of the β-adrenergic antagonist propranolol in ASD for social interaction, anxiety, and language. METHODS: Seventy-four participants with ASD, age 7-24 years, were enr

Heart rate variability as candidate endophenotype of social anxiety: A two-generation family study.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is the extreme fear and avoidance of one or more social situations. The goal of the current study was to investigate whether heart rate variability (HRV) during resting state and a social performance task (SPT) is a candidate endophenotype of SAD. METHODS: In this two-generation family study, patients with SAD with their partner and children, and their siblings with partner and children took part in a SPT (total n = 121, 9 families, 3-30 persons per family, age range: 8-61 years, 17 patients with SAD). In this task, participants had to watch and evalu

Anxiolytic effects of Plumeria rubra var. acutifolia (Poiret) L. flower extracts in the elevated plus-maze model of anxiety in mice.

Interest in alternative medicine and plant-derived medications that affect the "mind" is growing rapidly since last two decades. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of ethanolic extract of flower of Plumeria rubra (PR) along with its fractions in the elevated plus-maze (EPM) model of anxiety. The P. rubra extract or its fractions was administered orally to male Swiss mice, at graded doses, 1h prior to behavioural assessment. The PR extract at the dose of 100mg/kg p.o., significantly increased the time spent in the open arms of the EPM. Further, the anxiolytic properties

The association between health anxiety and disgust reactions in a contamination-based behavioral approach task.

Existing evidence suggests that disgust is an important affective process related to health anxiety. The present study sought to determine the contribution of health anxiety symptoms in the prediction of disgust and behavioral avoidance in a large, nonclinical sample (N=156). Regression analyses showed that overall health anxiety symptoms predicted disgust on a behavioral approach task independent of gender, negative affect, and fear of contamination. Particularly, health anxiety-related reassurance seeking was found to be uniquely associated with disgust and behavioral avoidance after control

Driving error and anxiety related to iPod mp3 player use in a simulated driving experience.

Driver distraction due to cellular phone usage has repeatedly been shown to increase the risk of vehicular accidents; however, the literature regarding the use of other personal electronic devices while driving is relatively sparse. It was hypothesized that the usage of an mp3 player would result in an increase in not only driving error while operating a driving simulator, but driver anxiety scores as well. It was also hypothesized that anxiety scores would be positively related to driving errors when using an mp3 player. 32 participants drove through a set course in a driving simulator twice,

Pharmacological characterization of 6-bromo-3'-nitroflavone, a synthetic flavonoid with high affinity for the benzodiazepine receptors.

6-Bromo-3'-nitroflavone is a synthetic flavone derivative that selectively recognizes benzodiazepine receptors and has potent anxiolytic-like effects. Here, we describe in detail its pharmacological characterization. When i.p. injected in mice, 6-bromo-3'-nitroflavone (0.01-0.3 mg/kg) had an anxiolytic-like effect in the elevated plus-maze test. This effect was blocked by the specific benzodiazepine receptor antagonist, flumazenil. In addition, it exhibited anxiolytic-like actions when given orally (1 mg/kg). 6-Bromo-3'-nitroflavone did not exhibit myorelaxant effects (up to 30 mg/kg, i.p.). U

The effects of a benzodiazepine antagonist Ro 15-1788 in the presence of stable concentrations of midazolam.

The benzodiazepine antagonist Ro 15-1788 was administered in a 10-mg intravenous bolus dose to seven healthy young adult volunteers to evaluate the drug's efficacy and duration of action against midazolam. A steady state serum concentration of midazolam was obtained by an initial fast infusion rate of 6.0 mg/min (duration: 10 min) and a maintenance infusion rate of 0.275 mg/min. After administering the antagonist, all subjects opened their eyes without any command in a median time of 36 s (range: 28-48 s). Their personal, temporal and local orientation was reestablished within 54-120 s (median

A neurocognitive account of attentional control theory: how does trait anxiety affect the brain's attentional networks?

Attentional control theory (ACT) was proposed to account for trait anxiety's effects on cognitive performance. According to ACT, impaired processing efficiency in high anxiety is mediated through inefficient executive processes that are needed for effective attentional control. Here we review the central assumptions and predictions of ACT within the context of more recent empirical evidence from neuroimaging studies. We then attempt to provide an account of ACT within a framework of the relevant cognitive processes and their associated neural mechanisms and networks, particularly the fronto-pa

From social media to body image distress: Problematic internet use, exercise addiction, and enhancement drugs use across countries.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Social media increasingly shapes body image by promoting often unattainable beauty ideals. Concurrently, targeted online marketing of image- and performance-enhancing drugs (IPEDs) exploits these vulnerabilities, intensifying anxiety and fostering maladaptive behaviours such as problematic usage of the internet (PUI), compulsive exercise, and IPEDs consumption. This study explores these behaviours across nine countries and examines how PUI, excessive exercise, and IPEDs use predict appearance anxiety, aiming to inform targeted prevention strategies for at-risk populations.

Validation of the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale (GAD-7) as a screening tool for anxiety among pregnant Chinese women.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety is common during pregnancy. The 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale (GAD-7) is a self-rating scale for detecting anxiety and has been validated in various populations, but it has not been validated in pregnant Chinese women. The objective of this study was to validate the GAD-7 as a screening tool to detect anxiety during pregnancy among Chinese women. METHODS: The GAD-7 and the anxiety subscale of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale (HADS-A) were administered to 140 pregnant Chinese women to evaluate the Cronbach's alpha and the criterion-related validity. Cognitive functions in young adults with generalized anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety and worry are central symptoms of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) that have been theorized to negatively impact cognitive functions. However, most of the research has focused on threat-related or emotionally-charged stimuli, and a surprisingly small number of investigations examined 'cold' cognitive functions using classic neuropsychological tests. Such investigations are particularly important given that some theoretical models suggest compensatory mechanisms associated with anxiety that in certain circumstances may result in intact performance. The aim of the present s

Motivational and emotional influences on cognitive control in depression: A pupillometry study.

Depressed people perform poorly on cognitive tasks; however, under certain conditions they show intact cognitive performance, with physiological reactivity consistent with needing to recruit additional cognitive control. We hypothesized that this apparent compensation is driven by the presence of affective processes (e.g., state anxiety), which in turn are moderated by the depressed individual's motivational state. Clarifying these processes may help researchers identify targets for treatment that if addressed may improve depressed patients' cognitive functioning. To test this hypothesis, 36 p
