The effects of the interactions between dietary carbohydrates and copper deficiency on superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities and their roles in peroxidative pathways were investigated. Weanling rats were fed diets deficient in copper and containing either 62% starch, fructose, or glucose. Decreased activity of SOD was noted in all rats fed the copper-deficient diets regardless of the nature of dietary carbohydrate. Acute intoxication of mice with high doses of paracetamol (acetaminophen, 4-hydroxyacetanilide) led to a dose-dependent lipid peroxidation (LPO) measured in vivo by ethane exhalation and in vitro by malondialdehyde formation and glutathione depletion. A lotion of 20% benzoyl peroxide was applied to ulcers on legs from necrobiosis lipoidica diabeticorum. The ulcers healed rapidly and uneventfully, leaving firm, yellow scars. The efficacy and simplicity of use of topical benzoyl peroxide therapy is discussed.

A continuous application of ethylene (10 mul/l) and propylene (500 mul/l) to potato tubers (Solanum tuberosum L.) resulted in an upsurge of respiration and a concomitant rise in peroxides. When applied in 100% O(2), the effect of ethylene and propylene on respiration and peroxide formation was augmented. A 37,000 X g supernatant fraction prepared from fat lung homogenate demonstrated a 2- to 3-fold increase in guanylate cyclase activity after incubation at 30 degrees for 30 min (preincubation). Phagocytosis-induced formate and glucose C-1 oxidation by the polymorphonuclear leukocytes of a patient with hereditary myeloperoxidase deficiency was considerably greater than normal. The addition of catalase to the leukocyte suspension was required for optimum formate oxidation.
