Pathological Gambling in Parkinson's disease patients: Dopaminergic medication or personality traits fault?

Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are clinically relevant in Parkinson disease (PD) patients, with an established association with PD medication. Aim of our study was to study whether the increased frequency of pathological gambling (PG), reported in subgroups of PD patients, is related to specific personality tracts additional to dopaminergic medications. Thirty-seven PD patients with a personal history of PG where enrolled. Twenty one PD patients, matched for disease and dopaminergic therapy, never experiencing PG, were enrolled as controls. All subjects were tested with the Minnesota Multiph

High-risk sexual behaviour & sensation seeking among heavy alcohol users.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: An association has been shown between alcohol use and high-risk sexual behaviour. One of the important variables that might mediate risky sexual behaviour among alcohol users is the sensation-seeking dimension of personality. This study was undertaken with the aim to assess the relationship between sensation seeking and sexual risk taking among heavy alcohol users admitted to a De-addiction centre. METHODS: To study the above association, sensation seeking was compared between subjects admitted for treatment of alcohol dependence with (n = 30) and without (n = 30) rep

[Examination of the significance of psychological factors in the etiology of alopecia areata. I. Examining Type A behavior].

We tested the significance of psychic factors in the etiology of alopecia areata by means of the assessment of the Behaviour Pattern A (BPA)--a particular way of regulation of the relations between the individual and the environment, the basis of which is a great need for achievement in the individual who realizes this need by means of domination and aggressiveness. The testing was carried out by means of the Polish Questionnaire for the Assessment of the Behaviour Pattern A in adults. 60 patients were tested (31 women and 29 men). The results were compared with the normative groups described

Cortisol excretion in high and low cynically hostile men.

Cynical hostility as measured by the Cook and Medley Hostility (Ho) Scale has been found in some studies to be associated with increased risk of life-threatening illness. Previous laboratory studies of cardiovascular reactivity have been consistent with the general hypothesis that increased physiological responsiveness is one possible mechanism underlying the association between hostility and health. The present study extended this previous research by evaluating urinary cortisol excretion during routine daily activities in a sample of high and low cynically hostile young men. Although high an

Construct validity of the Diagnostic Inventory of Personality and Symptoms: external correlates.

This study extended knowledge of the construct validity of Vincent's Diagnostic Inventory of Personality and Symptoms (DIPS) by examining the relationships between the DIPS and the MMPI, the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory, the Profile of Mood States, the Symptom Check List-90, and the California Psychological Inventory. Subjects were 300 predominantly male psychiatric inpatients. Correlational analyses revealed that the DIPS clinical scales were related most strongly to MMPI and MCMI clinical scales. Eleven of 14 DIPS clinical scales showed clinically significant correlations with simila

Obsessional personality disorder and remembering.

Patients suffering from obsessional personality disorder (anankasts) have been described as possessing 'superior memories', because of the detailed precision of their accounts. At the same time, such classical phenomena as doubt, checking and rumination imply faulty recall. This paradox is discussed, and some predictions drawn from a hypothesis regarding the cognitive charactteristics of obsessional disorder. Findings are presented which indicate that, by comparison with matched psychiatric controls, anankasts do not excel in the long-term recall of factual information or meaningful anecdotal

Theory of Mind (ToM) Performance in High Functioning Autism (HFA) and Schizotypal-Schizoid Personality Disorders (SSPD) Patients.

The similarities between high functioning autism (HFA) and schizotypal-schizoid personality disorder (SSPD) in terms of social cognition and interpersonal deficits may lead to confusion in symptom interpretation, and consequently result in misdiagnosis. Thus, this study aims to investigate differences in mentalizing with particular interest on the socio-cognitive and socio-affective dimensions. Three Advanced Theory of Mind (ToM) tests were applied in 35 patients with HFA, 30 patients with SSPD and 36 healthy controls. Individuals with HFA showed greater impairment and no dissociation between

Posttraumatic stress disorder: protective and risk factors in 18 survivors of a plane crash.

The aim of this study is to identify protective and risk factors related to the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on a sample of survivors from a single plane crash. Eighteen survivors were examined 6 months following the event. The subjects all underwent psychiatric interviews, Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale structured interviews, personality and cognitive tests. Only 38.9% of them presented with all of the symptoms of PTSD; 22.2% showed no symptoms for PTSD; remaining survivors exhibited emotional/affective symptoms related to the event. In addition to the severity of th

Denial of hemiplegia: an investigation into the theories of causation.

A comprehensive study of denial of hemiplegia, with tests chosen to cover the varied proposed hypotheses, was undertaken. Twenty patients with denial of hemiplegia following acute CVA were studied. Their results were compared with those from two patient 'control' groups. A neurological examination and neuropsychological assessment were carried out in all patients and CT brain scan performed in 21 CVA cases. The findings are discussed in relation to previously proposed theories of causation concerning denial of hemiplegia which include personality factors, cognitive ability and the presence/abs

Contrasting social knowledge and theory of mind patterns in adults with personality disorders, schizophrenia spectrum disorders, and healthy controls.

INTRODUCTION: Personality disorders (PD) and schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) are distinct conditions displaying common symptoms, like impairments in social cognition, that make them hard to distinguish, especially in severe cases. To date, few studies have compared theory of mind skills in these two disorders, and none have compared social knowledge skills. This study aims to compare the social cognitive abilities of patients with these conditions. METHOD: Non-parametric analyses of covariance were used to compare severe PD patients (n = 37), SSD patients (n = 44), and healthy controls

Amnesia of Uncertain Etiology in an Adolescent during COVID-19 Pandemic: A Case Report.

Sudden retrograde memory loss, in the absence of neurological causes, is usually referred to as a dissociative symptom. Dissociative amnesia, defined in the DSM-V as an inability to remember important autobiographical experiences, usually of a traumatic or stressful nature, is however a controversial phenomenon. Few cases with this pattern are described in the scientific literature and still fewer regarding adolescents. The objective of this study was to describe the case of an unexplained sudden memory loss that only partially fits with the criteria for dissociative amnesia, in a juvenile pat

Psychological aspects in children and adolescents with hypopituitarism.

Psychological studies in children with stunted growth have partly shown inconsistent results due to heterogeneity of samples and the use of non-standardized test procedures. We have examined patients with proven hypopituitarism using a selection of standardized and age-related psychological tests. Forty-eight patients, 32 male, 16 female, age 6 to 26 years with isolated growth hormone deficiency (n = 22) and multiple pituitary deficiencies (n = 26) were investigated. The patients had had hormonal substitution therapy for 0.1-16.8 years. Test procedures included evaluation of intelligence and v

Novelty seeking and rapid symptom improvement across active and sham accelerated iTBS conditions: A pooled individual-patient data analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is highly prevalent and often treatment-resistant. Accelerated intermittent theta burst stimulation (aiTBS) is a promising intervention for treatment-resistant depression (TRD), though outcomes vary. Personality traits have been examined in relation to rTMS outcomes, yet their role in aiTBS remains underexplored. This pooled individual-patient-data analysis of two randomized, sham-controlled trials examined associations between baseline Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) traits and one-week symptom change, and whether they differed by condit

The nosology of addiction as a medical condition: a concise history and review of contemporary perspectives.

There is active scientific debate about the nature of addiction as a mental disorder, but with comparatively little discussion of nosology itself. To contribute to the ongoing dialogue, this review provides a concise history of the formal medical diagnoses used to define addiction clinically and vanguard contemporary perspectives. The history of addiction as a medical diagnosis starts at the beginning of the 20th century in the first International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and was present in 1953 in the first edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM). Across iterations of b

Exploring Symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder in People With Affective Disorders: A Network Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) frequently co-occurs with affective disorders, such as major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD), yet the structure of BPD symptoms within these populations remains insufficiently characterized. This study utilizes network analysis to investigate the network structure of BPD symptoms in individuals with affective disorders. METHODS: This study included 1323 participants: 783 individuals with affective disorders (MDD [n = 245], BD I [n = 120], BD II [n = 418]) and 540 controls without a history of psychiatric disorders.
