Root zone warming represses foliar diseases in tomato by inducing systemic immunity.

Plants employ systemic-induced resistance as part of their defence arsenal against pathogens. In recent years, the application of mild heating has been found to induce resistance against several pathogens. In the present study, we investigated the effect of root zone warming (RZW) in promoting tomato's resistance against the necrotrophic fungus Botrytis cinerea (Bc), the hemibiotrophic bacterium Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria (Xcv) and the biotrophic fungus Oidium neolycopersici (On). We demonstrate that RZW enhances tomato's resistance to Bc, On and Xcv through a process that is depen

Endophytes in Medicinal Plants: A Sustainable Solution for Coping with Environmental Stresses.

The increasing need for integrative and alternative medical therapies, especially in the aftermath of the COVID-19 epidemic, has emphasized the importance of medicinal plants in worldwide healthcare. These plants, which contain abundant bioactive secondary metabolites, provide a sustainable and cost-effective option for medicinal, adaptogenic, and immune-boosting purposes. Blooming medicinal plants that exist are at risk of becoming extinct because of excessive harvesting, deforestation, and wildfires. Medicinal plants have complex physiological defenses against stress, which are strengthened

Overexpression of Citrus reticulata SAMT in Nicotiana tabacum increases MeSA volatilization and decreases Xylella fastidiosa symptoms.

Nicotiana tabacum overexpressing CrSAMT from Citrus reticulata increased production of MeSA, which works as an airborne signal in neighboring wild-type plants, inducing PR1 and increasing resistance to the pathogen Xylella fastidiosa. Xylella fastidiosa is one of the major threats to plant health worldwide, affecting yield in many crops. Despite many efforts, the development of highly productive resistant varieties has been challenging. In studying host plant resistance, the S-adenosyl-L-methionine: salicylic acid carboxyl methyltransferase gene (SAMT) from Citrus reticulata, a X. fastidiosa r

A Polysaccharide Derived from a Trichosporon sp. Culture Strongly Primes Plant Resistance to Viruses.

Plant viruses cause devastating diseases in plants, yet no effective viricide is available for agricultural application. We screened cultured filtrates derived from various soil microorganisms cultured in vegetable broth that enhanced plant viral resistance. A cultured filtrate, designated F8 culture filtrate, derived from a fungus belonging to the genus Trichosporon, induced strong resistance to various viruses on different plants. Our inoculation assay found the infection rate of Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV)-inoculated Nicotiana benthamiana with F8 culture filtrate pretreatment may decrease to

Plant Material in the Thalamus and Mesencephalon of a Young Dog.

An unusual case of neurological deficits due to intracranial plant material in the thalamus is presented. The case was a young dog with pyrexia, neck pain, and neurological deficits that were consistent with an intracranial multifocal lesion. Based on the imaging findings and the result of the cerebrospinal fluid analysis, a presumptive diagnosis of immune-mediated meningoencephalitis was made. The dog initially responded to immunosuppressive treatment but then deteriorated and was euthanized. At autopsy, plant material was found in the thalamus and mesencephalon. Intracranial foreign bodies a

Toxicant-disease-environment interactions associated with suppression of immune system, growth, and reproduction.

The effects of marginal malnourishment , infections, and environmental chemicals on growth and reproductive success in Swiss-Webster white mice and wild deer mice were studied with fractional factorial designs. Interaction effects were discovered. For example, malnourished mice were more sensitive to virus exposure and environmental chemicals (a plant growth regulator or polychlorinated biphenyls). Since several commercial plant growth regulators also appear to suppress the immune system, these results cast doubt on the adequacy of current toxicity testing procedures in which factors are studi

Antifungal Plant Defensins as an Alternative Tool to Combat Candidiasis.

Currently, the spread of fungal infections is becoming an urgent problem. Fungi of the Candida genus are opportunistic microorganisms that cause superficial and life-threatening systemic candidiasis in immunocompromised patients. The list of antifungal drugs for the treatment of candidiasis is very limited, while the prevalence of resistant strains is growing rapidly. Therefore, the search for new antimycotics, including those exhibiting immunomodulatory properties, is of great importance. Plenty of natural compounds with antifungal activities may be extremely useful in solving this problem. T

Protein-coding gene interaction network prediction of bioactive plant compound action against SARS-CoV-2: a novel hypothesis using bioinformatics analysis.

This study aimed to verify the action of bioactive compounds from Brazilian plants on the leader genes involved in the SARS-CoV-2 pathway. The main human genes involved were identified in GeneCards and UNIPROT platforms, and an interaction network between leader genes was established in the STRING database. To design chemo-biology interactome networks and elucidate the interplay between genes related to the disease and bioactive plant compounds, the metasearch engine STITCH 3.1 was used. The analysis revealed that SMAD3 and CASP3 genes are leader genes, suggesting that the mechanism of action

Metatranscriptomic Sequencing Suggests the Presence of Novel RNA Viruses in Rice Transmitted by Brown Planthopper.

Viral pathogens are a major threat to stable crop production. Using a backcross strategy, we find that integrating a dominant brown planthopper (BPH) resistance gene Bph3 into a high-yield and BPH-susceptible indica rice variety significantly enhances BPH resistance. However, when Bph3-carrying backcross lines are infested with BPH, these BPH-resistant lines exhibit sterile characteristics, displaying panicle enclosure and failure of seed production at their mature stage. As we suspected, BPH-mediated viral infections could cause the observed sterile symptoms, and we characterized rice-infecti

A multifunctional Streptomyces murinus bioinoculant integrates immune priming and microbiome restructuring for sustainable control of Sclerotinia minor in Brassica rapa.

BACKGROUND: Harnessing beneficial soil microbes provides an eco-friendly alternative to pesticides for sustainable crop protection. Members of the genus Streptomyces combine broad antagonistic activity with plant immune priming and growth promotion, yet their ecological roles and field reliability remain insufficiently understood. We investigated the soil actinobacterium Streptomyces murinus JS029 in the Brassica rapa-Sclerotinia minor pathosystem to elucidate its mechanisms of pathogen suppression, plant immune activation and rhizosphere microbiome modulation, and to develop a field-deployabl

Glycosylated SARs Cov 2 interaction with plant lectins.

Lectins are non-immune carbohydrate-binding proteins/glycoproteins that are found everywhere in nature, from bacteria to human cells. They have also been a valuable biological tool for the purification and subsequent characterisation of glycoproteins due to their carbohydrate binding recognition capacity. Antinociceptive, antiulcer, anti-inflammatory activities and immune modulatory properties have been discovered in several plant lectins, with these qualities varying depending on the lectin carbohydrate-binding site. The Coronavirus of 2019 (COVID-19) is a respiratory disease that has swept t

Pangenome graph analysis reveals evolution of resistance breaking in spinach downy mildew.

Filamentous plant pathogens secrete effectors to successfully establish host infections. In resistant crop varieties, plant immunity can be triggered by immune receptors that recognize these effectors. Resistant crop varieties are grown in large-scale monocultures imposing strong selection pressure on pathogens, driving rapid evolution of effector repertoires resulting in the frequent breakdowns of resistance within just a few growing seasons. The oomycete Peronospora effusa, responsible for downy mildew on spinach, is an example of a rapidly adapting pathogen, but it is yet unknown how P. eff…

Receptor-like kinases BIR1 and BIR3 modulate antiviral resistance by different mechanisms.

BRASSINOSTEROID INSENSITIVE1-ASSOCIATED RECEPTOR KINASE 1 (BAK1)-INTERACTING RECEPTOR-LIKE KINASE (BIR) proteins are negative regulators of cell death and defense against microbes in Arabidopsis thaliana. Here, we demonstrate that the members of the BIR family function as negative regulators of antiviral resistance in Arabidopsis. We show that during tobacco rattle virus (TRV) infection, BIR1 and BIR3 gene expression is antagonistically regulated by salicylic acid and jasmonic acid signaling pathways. BIR1 and BIR3 negatively regulate TRV resistance via distinct mechanisms. Our data indicate t

Is an oral plant-based vaccine against hepatitis B virus possible?

Prevention of hepatitis B, one of the most prevalent human diseases, still requires cheap and commonly available vaccines. Oral vaccines, including plant-based formulations, have been considered as alternatives or supplements for standard injection vaccines, due to the assumed low-cost production and simplified vaccination. Although plant production of HBV antigens is sufficiently efficient, despite almost 20 years of research still no anti-HBV plant-based vaccine has been developed. The basic difficulty has been to elaborate an effective immunisation procedure. Immunisation by parenteral prim

Benzothiadiazole-induced priming for potentiated responses to pathogen infection, wounding, and infiltration of water into leaves requires the NPR1/NIM1 gene in Arabidopsis.

Systemic acquired resistance (SAR) is a plant defense state that is induced, for example, after previous pathogen infection or by chemicals that mimic natural signaling compounds. SAR is associated with the ability to induce cellular defense responses more rapidly and to a greater degree than in noninduced plants, a process called "priming." Arabidopsis plants were treated with the synthetic SAR inducer benzothiadiazole (BTH) before stimulating two prominent cellular defense responses, namely Phe AMMONIA-LYASE (PAL) gene activation and callose deposition. Although BTH itself was essentially in

The negative regulated immune mechanism of Skp1-Cullin1-F-box (SCF) E3 ubiquitin ligase-mediated HOS15-dependent responses in banana.

Under Foc TR4 stress, MaSKP1-1, MaCULI1, and MaHOS15 form SCFHOS15-type E3 ubiquitin ligase, which inhibits the expression level of SA signal-related factors to regulate the immune process of bananas. Banana wilt disease, caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense, tropical race 4 (Foc TR4), poses a significant threat to global banana production. In Musa spp., HOS15 is believed to play a role in enhancing the response to Foc TR4 stress by the salicylic acid signaling pathway. Previous studies have indicated that HOS15 functions as an F-box protein within the SCF ubiquitin ligase complex, cont

NPR1 suppresses Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus-induced callose and reactive oxygen species accumulation.

Huanglongbing (HLB), a devastating citrus disease caused by Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas), triggers persistent immune activation marked by excessive callose deposition and reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, which impairs phloem function. This maladaptive response has led to HLB being described as a "pathogen-triggered immune disease". Overexpression of the Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) NONEXPRESSOR OF PATHOGENESIS-RELATED GENES1 (AtNPR1) gene, a master regulator of systemic acquired resistance (SAR), confers robust HLB tolerance in susceptible citrus varieties, with tr
