BACKGROUND: Prior research suggests that plasma may improve outcomes in traumatic brain injury (TBI). We examined the association between pl … obstructive pulmonary disease). Multivariable logistic regression examined the association between plasma volume transfused in the first four hours and hospital mortality, adjusting for sociodemographics, severity of injury/illness, neurologic status, and volume of other blood products. We also adjusted for and included interactions with hemorrhage markers (sh …

Heat adaption through acclimatisation or acclimation improves cardiovascular stability by maintaining cardiac output due to compensatory inc … , gastrointestinal temperature, skin temperature, sweat loss, total non-urinary fluid loss (TNUFL), plasma volume and participant's ratings of perceived exertion (RPE). Following HA, the HOT group demonstrated increased sweat loss (p = 0.01) and TNUFL (p = 0.01) in comparison to the TEMP group with a significantly decreased RPE (p = 0.01). On TTE, post exposure …

BACKGROUND: In advanced heart failure, the compensatory responses to reduced cardiac output, in spite of fluid retention, lead to maladaptiv … elevated work load on an already failed cardio-circulatory system results in further deterioration. Plasma volume is usually increased in untreated patients with increased extracellular fluid. However, it may range from reduced to increased in treated patients. Currently, diuretics remain the initial first line of therapy. In refractory cases, restoring plasma …

Treatment of severe hemorrhage offers few theoretical problems, but in practice, severe blood loss usually occurs out of hospital, often in … crine secretions when administered to animals in hemorrhagic hypotension. HS acts through transient plasma volume expansion, positive inotropic effect on cardiac contractility, precapillary vasodilation through a direct action on vascular smooth muscle. Expansion of circulating volume is part of the mechanism, the extra volume coming from the intracellular comp …

A computer model incorporating known behavior of the cardiovascular system and intravascular:interstitial fluid exchange was designed which allowed bleeding rate, IV infusion rate, and prehospital care times to be independently specified. All possible circumstances were examined. The model shows that IV's are potentially of benefit only when all of the following occur: 1) the bleeding rate is initially 25-100 ml/min, 2) the prehospital time exceeds 30 minutes, and 3) the IV infusion rate is approximately equal to the bleeding rate. IV infusions therefore appear of little benefit in the usual u

The high cost and limited availability of human albumin as a plasma substitute make it desirable to limit its use to special cases and to replace it by inexpensive and easily obtainable colloids. Patients about to undergo major abdominal surgery were given either human albumin or dextran 60 during the operation and for three days afterwards. Although both groups received the same quantity of colloidal plasma substitutes they differed significantly in respect to the serum albumin and protein concentrations. However, the osmotic pressure, for the maintenance of which the albumin fraction is main

A prospective study was undertaken to investigate the incidence and aetiology of acute confusional states in physically ill old people. The subjects were 71 patients aged 70 years or over who were admitted as emergencies to a general medical unit. Mental testing revealed that: (a) one in six patients had an acute confusional state on admission; and (b) one in four patients had evidence of dementia. The presence of dehydration/volume depletion at the time of admission was estimated by various parameters which were brought together to form a new index called the 'dehydration score'. There was a

By a suitable pattern of saline infusion we established an equilibrium between input and renal output of sodium and water in the conscious animal, which was maintained for six hours. During this period of equilibrium we found an increase in GFR, plasma volume and functional ECFV of about 30% each, the amount of intravascular protein and albumin being unchanged. Under nitrous-oxide and thiopentone anaesthesia renal sodium and water excretion was unchanged compared with values of conscious animals. However there was a striking decrease in plasma volume as well as in circulating protein and album…

INTRODUCTION: Both elevated cortisol and hippocampal volume have been linked to an increased risk for the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD). This longitudinal study assessed the effects of plasma cortisol on hippocampal atrophy and clinical progression rates in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI).
METHODS: Patients with amnestic MCI (n = 304) were selected from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) based on availability of baseline plasma cortisol and hippocampal volume measures, assessed at baseline and during follow-ups. We investigated associations between

The hemodynamic effects of a decreasing plasma urea level during hemodialysis were studied in acutely uremic, conscious dogs. Each dog was studied twice, during dialytic ultrafiltration against both a urea-free (U-) and a urea-supplemented (U+) dialysate. Plasma osmolality (-13 mosm/kg/H2O +/- 10 SD, p less than 0.01) and urea levels (-43 mg/dl +/- 20, p less than 0.01) decreased when using the (U-) dialysate, but were unchanged with the (U+) dialysate. At the end-point of volume depletion (MAP less than 80 mm Hg) total peripheral resistance index [U (+): 3,376 +/- 743 dyn . s X cm-5 X m2, U(-
