INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to investigate the allele frequencies of the human platelet antigens (HPA) HPA-1-29w system in Jiangsu (China) and establish the platelet apheresis registry in blood donors.
METHODS: HPA genotyping was performed using the MassARRAY iPLEX® platform. Allele and genotype frequencies were estimated by direct counting and tested for Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The transfusion mismatch probability was calculated for every HPA specificity.
RESULTS: The HPA allele frequencies in the Jiangsu Han population of HPA-1b, -2b, -3b, -4b, -5b, -6b, -11b, -15b, and -21b were 0.

OBJECTIVES: To identify risk factors for transfusion and trends in transfusion rates across pregnancy and the postnatal period.
METHODS: Linked hospital and birth data on all births in hospitals in New South Wales, Australia, between 2001 and 2010 were used to identify blood transfusions for women during pregnancy, at birth, and in the 6 weeks postpartum. Poisson regression was used to identify risk factors for red cell transfusion in the birth admission. Separate models were fitted for cesarean and vaginal births.
